you know how it is ...
since i powdercoated the suspension yellow, i can't keep up with the car anymore ...
it's simply too fast ...

this was just a test run, making sure all the parts fit together OK. which they do.

look out for my next "how to" on installing the rear mueller roller bearings and the 911 e-brake setup.

once those are done, the new axles will be installed. i promise ...

aren't you missing the keeper thing that fits in the groove at the end of the CV and presses against the CV in pic #1? What holds the tranny side CV fast to the axle?

Is there a reason you did not use the 944 axles? Were they too long? Nice pictures

Anyone have a part cost breakdown? What do the early flanges go for used? Can you use non-turbo 944 stuff? ie, axle flange, CV's, etc.....?

what bearing will you use?

i've got the stock (FAG) 914/4 wheel bearings ...

the early 911 hubs have the same dia. as the 914/4 hubs and will slide right into a stock 914/4 bearing ...

Two questions come to mind;
1st- Is the 944 stub & 914 stub axle the same overal lenght?

2nd- Does the 944 Cv have the same articulation as the 914 CV.

yes, but he asked about the "stub" axle ...

the 944 Stub Axle is the same width as the 914 stub axle on the CV side of the wheel-bearing, the only difference is that the actual thread that sticks out on the wheel side (outside) seems to be a bit longer ...

actually I think the 944 CV's will give you more articulation, if I remember correctly from my dune buggy research, the bug CV's are the worst (probably pretty close to the 914's), then the 944 and TIV bus CVs are next, and then the 930 CV's give the best articulation and will handle the most power...

Whats the partnumber of the 944 stub axles your using ? Mine came of a 944 turbo and have the part # 951.332.235.01.
They fit right into the ealy 911 hubs, but they are a little bit longer than the original 911 stubs ( approx. 1/2 ") .

ok, just got back from EASY with some more info ...

1 - yes, same part number on the 944 stubbies. they fit just fine.

2 - the CVs don't have to be from a 944 turbo, ALL 944s with aluminum trailing arms have the same halfshaft and CVs, however there are 3 different types of stub axles and hubs on those (later) 944s.

3 - the donor 944 needs to be post-mid-85

4 - Price: used 944 turbo axle (including the stub axle) ~$100 per axle (*)

5 - Price: used coarse spline 915 output flange ~$75 per flange (*)

IIRC.. the stubs are the same. But I think that the axles are different for an Auto.

But I have been known to be wrong.


BTW... I beat everyone here to it. I have this setup on my car right now. I have driven it and it works fine.

the AUTOMATIC axles look to have the same CV's and STubs....BUT the axle length is different....

not happy about the price and rareness of the 915 flanges though

they're actually not *that* rare ...

there were a few years somewhere between '75 and '80 when the 915 used the coarse splined input shafts ...

and the price may very well vary from different vendors, what i listed is what *i* payed ...

hi folks,

now i'm comletely confused.

I've had a look at the parts catalog of mittelmotor (www.mittelmotor.de).
They list only two different cv's for the 944.

1. 82 -89 all 944
2. S2 and Turbo

According to PET there must be at least three different CV's, which means that 82-85 are
different from those used on the later cars.

Could someone bring a little bit light into the darkness ?

there's 3 different types of axles for the 944, but only 2 different types of CVs ...

same CV for:
944 '83-'91 and pre '87 944 turbo

different CV for:
944 turbo '87-'91

o.k. Andy, now i think i've got it

that means, that you can use any 944 (as well 924S) CV from 83 thru 91 in combination with modified 914 axles and the early turbo stubs.
Later CVs from S2 and Turbos will not work, due to a different splining on the axle side.

o.k. thats it

now i will go out and hunt for parts ;-)
