MDB2.gif I did a little recon this morning and came up with a 56 mile drive. It's a bit longer than I originally anticipated, but, WOW! It has much to offer - VERY technical, rolling hills, twisty curvy, off-camber blinds & beautiful scenery abounds!

Here is my plan, which is slightly different than posted before.

MEET NOON
Columbus, Indiana
Northwest corner of I-65 Exit 68 (Indiana 46)
There is an vacant restaurant 200 yards from the freeway between a Swifty Gas and a Denny's.

DEPART 12:30pm PROMPTLY
56 mile loop
IPB Image

We'll do a quick lap around town and enter Brown County State Park from the WEST entrance.
I'll contact the park for a location Monday (look for info added here)

THERE IS A FEE TO GET INTO THE PARK, but I can't remember what it is.

BS SESSION & PICNIC
We should arrive between 2:00 pm and 2:30pm.
BS and show & shine & picnic till folks want to leave
Picnic will be low key. I will provide lunch meats and buns with potato & macaroni salads and maybe some cole slaw.

If anyone is coming through Indy and wants to caravan to the Columbus starting spot contact me.
It takes 35 minutes to get there from my house. If anyone wants to spend the night Friday Oct 17th at my house I can make arangements to accomodate some. The guest room is spoken for, but I have a large L shaped couch in the basement that can sleep 2 more.

Please post a note if you plan to attend, spend the night & if you are bringing anyone.

Thanks,
I hope to see you all there!

Here is a VERY LARGE version of the map.
I will hand these out along with turn-by-turn directions at the starting point.

been looking at the logistics and i just don't think we can make it this year ...
which is a pity, 'cause we have some family south of there it'd have been convenient to visit, but i think it will have to wait for spring and the trip back home from Daytona ...

but THANK YOU for the planning and the map - we'll be over there one fine autumn or another.
if this turns into an annual event, please let us know - just since we both have new jobs arranging for time off is iffy, and i think it'd be 2 days there, 2 daysback under the best of circumstances - and we just can't take a week off right now...

this is the part of working for someone else i really don't like - but oh well...

Count me in!

I like the route! I'm not too familiar with the route from 46 to Freetown, but I've traveled the route from Freetown to Nashville a few times - WOW. This will be a fantastic drive.

Too bad we couldn't meet while you were here in Nashville. I spent the day on the east side of Indy.

Let me know if I can do anything to assist with event set up.

Cool!!!!!! driving.gif

Admins can we get this topic nailed??

Doug,

sorry I didn't give you a heads up, but I got up, watched the F1 race. It ended early and I said "Go do the Nashville thing NOW!" So I jumped in my truck and started driving. I ended up going down 65 and I thought about meeting outside of town and cruising in. That way we are no where near the Hilly Hundred folks. I'm really pleased with the route, although it's a tad bit long, but worth it.

The first road we turn onto is called Four Mile Ridge Road. HAHA!! First 8 miles are the toughest! boldblue.gif
indydad
Damm, even if I got the MIG working overtime I still couldn't make it this time, but sounds like a great event. Hpoefully it will be a yearly thing.......Tour de Hoosier. I sure will be happy to help next season.

Jerry,
you don't have to do it in a teener. You can drive your other car if you like.

Indeed. Jerry, I will probably be in an F150 Supercrew myself. The closest thing to a 914 that I will have with me is pictures of a rusty shell. I will probably just meet folks at the picnic site.
indydad
Teeners ARE the best! I suppose my '01 Jetta 1.7T Wolfsberg has some connection.........I know it's a stretch. I will certainly be there barring any disaster.

Sean: Iwill be there, I,;
llll try to bring people with me . I will probbly hook up with Tom M. ( Curvie). E-mail me Tom! Trying to get at least 1 from Columbus on a Maiden Voyage in a Knockout
914 . This will be the hit of the meet. He does have a few things to finish yet. But I am saying " You haven't seen nothing yet" Dave smile.gif
seanery
Are you talking about Steve Thacker's car?

He posted pics of it recently.
BarberDave
smilie_pokal.gif
Yeh: That,s the car. Sharp, IMO doesn't do it justice.
He has some things to finish up , I really hope he can make it. BTW I have some small isues to address, so back to work. smilie_flagge6.gif Dave K.

What time zone? As many others perhaps do or do not know, Indiana has the most f#$%ed up time zones of anywhere. The southern part of the state is eastern time zone with daylight savings time. But Indy and other areas (most of the state) do not folloe daylight savings time. Hence, they are currently on CST until the time change. You never have to change your clock in most parts of Indiana.

I just want to be sure of when - had problems elsewhere before.

M
seanery
I forgot to put that one in.

Indiana is in Eastern STANDARD Time which is the same as Central Time until the time changes again (which is shortly after this event).
So we are NYC -1hour, Chicago-same, LA +2hours. Got it?
Brad Roberts
Should I change the first line to read "Nashville" ??

B
seanery
sure-go for it!
Brad Roberts
Nah... then people would think we are *smart*

I've been out of town for a week. Just getting caught back up on the board. I'll definately be there. Barber Dave, let's hook up for the ride down. I'll see if I can generate any interest in any of the other "SMOGies" Looks like a great route Sean! To me 50 miles seems about the right length for a cruise.
Speedster07
Hey Gang, I’m a newbie here. I also live in Indy clap56.gif If I find a 914 in time I will be there for the Hoosier Rally. (We are in CHT time zone:thats Central Hoosier Time for most of the state). I've been looking diligently for a nice 2.0, u got any leads I'm all ears. Also if anyone wants to get together for F1 let me know. I didn't know that there were many 914ers out here. If anyone lives in the Indy area I'd like to check out your cars. cool.gif Thanks Craig
Brad Roberts
Welcome Craig beerchug.gif Glad you could make it to the BBS. I'm sure we can locate you a decent car.

B
seanery
Craig,

we'd love to have you to the event, even if you're not driving a teener.

Welcome to the board! Brad is right, we'll get you a car. I know of a guy in Anderson that has two factory -6's that he is probably gonna sell. I haven't seen them, but they are probably decent to nice cars.

The best place to buy, however, is the west coast.

Sean: Are you going to have some of those shirts made for the Fall run? If so I'm in for 1. Dave smilie_flagge6.gif

Hey Sean, the fun run made it in to my local PCA newsletter. Already received a email about it.

Man, the shirt art work ROCKS! smilie_pokal.gif can't wait!

I forgot this earlier, but this route is not NEXTEL friendly, we are off the beaten path here. If you have another brand bring it.
They work in Colubus, but after we get off onto Four Mile Ridge Road kiss them goodbye!

this might be a good place to suggest that people bring GPRS / FRS 2-way radios ...
seanery
yes, I always recomend the family channel radios.
short range but could help in a pinch!! ( or for a potty break! LOL)
seanery
revised artwork. Shirts are ordered.

Nice touch adding the club logo.

Very nice agree.gif

someone mentioned a while back that the event had received notice in a PCA Region newsletter. is the tour being conducted as a PCA-sanctioned (and insured) tour ? is there any sanctioning body providing liability coverage, conducting pre-event technical and safety inspections, verifying that valid driver's licenses and proof-of-insurance documents are in the possession of the participants ?

i know these are unpopular questions, but you go sticking the '914Club' logo on stuff (i agree completely, it looks great!) and you start exposing a lot of people to a lot of potential liability in the event of an incident - especially when 'spirited' driving is involved (and what else would be the point ... :-) )

we had saw the case earlier where a west-coast 'tour' involved some elevated speeds and the destruction of a participant's vehicle. if a passerby had been involved in that incident, especially if there was the appearance of an organised event, innocent passerby's attorneys, heirs, and assigns would be having a field day looking for someone(s) to sue.

if you don't have something like a PCA region's event liability binder in place (probably too late to get that now, couldn't hurt to check...) it should be made VERY CLEAR to the particpants that this is NOT an organized activity, it is a group of individuals travelling the same path together and that no one shall look farther than one's own individual insurance coverage in the event of any incident.

that might not be enough to ward off actions by an injured non-participant, and i think it'd still be a good idea for a "show and tell" of driver's license and insurance coverage before engine start. having some way to check for construction activity on the day in question would be good too...

so that's my advice, which you are now welcome to ignore ...
y'all have fun, and BE CAREFUL.

If anyone coming to this has some engine sheetmetal for a 2.0 please let me know. I am looking for the passenger side cylinder cover and the front piece that goes in front of the fan. My engine sheetmetal was cut out for AC in these areas.

M

PS - My God - I think the wife wants to GO. This means LESS seat time for me!!!!!

ohmy.gif
Doug Leggins
I should have the engine tin. I'll check and let you know.

If anyone needs other parts, let me know. I have parts from several cars and the parts are located only a couple of miles from the park.

Doug

I will leave here on Tues. with a planned arrival time of Thursday evening.

If anyone in Indianapolis wants to get together for a lunch or dinner on Friday.. I'm up for it.

Also... Sean.. if you want to do a improptu tech session in someones garage... sign me up.

Let me know what you think. I will also show up early enough to go over anything you may have found on your car that needs addressing (other than the shift bushings and tranny mounts).

B
kafermeister
I will be in Bargersville on Friday night. Brad, I can bring a trailer with me and we can free up yours on Friday night if you want.

Rick
seanery
watcha doin in bargersville?
kafermeister
Spending Friday night with relatives. Relatives have volunteered to watch the kids while the wife and I make it to the picnic on Saturday.
seanery
I grew up in Greenwood, have lots of friends in Bargersville.
Brad Roberts
Lets do dinner Friday night. Sean can pic the location. Someplace decent that doesnt cost an arm and a leg (Chili's)

If we flip the cars from trailer to trailer Friday night.. does that mean you have to pull the trailer on the run on Sat. ?? or can you leave it at the relatives house ??

I need a 914 ride/drive for the event.

B
kafermeister
Brad, I haven't figured out what's going to happen with the trailer on Saturday if we flip Friday night. I know the relatives won't want it sitting in front of their house even for a day and off-street parking is minimal. I'll probably drag it with me all day if I can't work something out with them.

Seanery, specifically, they have told me that they actually live in Greenwood. It comes up as Bargersville on the caller ID.
seanery
Center Grove schools?
I've been thinking about moving back down there.
kafermeister
Not sure. They just moved a few months ago from Lafayette (sp?).
Pnambic
Count me in for the dinner. I'll even buy Brad an iced tea if he can help me pick out a decent flywheel from Doug. laugh.gif

And any info I can pick up from any tech sessions I can get to would be great!
