I guess you need to define "spent on".
Does that include routine maintenance like oil changes, tires, etc?
Does that include tools?
After all, in the summer, I prefer to use my 914 as a daily driver. That's cost avoidance for my Jeep.
A no-shit number for my 914-6 would be... about 12K. Purchase price of the car was about 6.5k. That's counting big purchases only. No routine maintenance, no tires, no cost of Clay driving up from Texas to eat my steaks and bratwurst.

Do tools count? The ones you just must have to work on a 914, welders, mills, bandsaws etc.

Not counting the purchase price.
I also have a couple a pints of blood, quite a bit of Knuckle skin, gallons of sweat. All for the price of a few cc's of adreniline
Seems fair to me.

I didnt include interest paid on the credit card so until thats paid off the cost will continue to increase.
This year Im getting hit hard, engine rebuild with bells and whistles, new turbo fabrication, paint job and all new trim.
The upside is its still way less than a new high performance sports car and will out perform most that sell under 200,000 I can also claim owning the only 3.1 turbo powered twinplug 914 .

just reviewed all my records concerning the teener
bought it for EUR 10,830 in June 1999
spent EUR 5,000 since then - including really everything (even maintenance & tools)
but the major part was EUR 3,650 for all seals, lines, liquids, filters new and some basic cosmetic things - something wasn't nescessary, but it gave me a better feeling

From day one, 11/85. From the spreadsheet I keep of all 914 costs.
purchase price- $5,000
upgrades - $17,144
six conversion, 911 brakes, suspension, ...
Some 'up-grades' left with the 4 cyl 2.0L engine in 1987.
mantainence/repairs - $19,225
tune ups(21), tires(6 sets), clutches(2), tranny rebuild(1), windsheilds(3), cables, ....
I'm just finishing up head rebuild, new clutch, cables, new fuel lines in center tunnel, gas tank flush/seal, etc. These costs/receipts have not been entered into spreadsheet yet.
Still cheaper than buying a new Porsche every 10 years.

Owning 2 914s for 20 years makes me think that I never want to know how much Betty and I spend on them.
But what is the cost of love? We love them like our children, would never sell them, and will do anything for them.
They are our family.
Cost does not matter.
But the employees at Zims know us on sight!

Despite this gargantic list, the car has been massively affordable. I've put 138000 miles or so on it over the course of the ownership. The expense of almost everything was primarily labor that I did myself. Realistically, I guess it may be $15,000. One of these days I gotta redo the 2nd gear synchros, and my frontmain bearing seal has started leaking, but really I got no more mods to do
EXCEPT FOR THE WINDOW LIFT KIT I JUST GOT FROM DR EVIL!!!!
oh well. I'll add it to the list when installation is done.

currently up to 5-6k$. Expect ~10-11k by year end, for this V8 build, after I sell off the extra parts.
..probably like most of you, I view it as a hobby expense and probably will lose money when/if I sell it.
