so you tack welded a tab onto the inner frame of the latch to put your screw into? there is nothing below the inside screw (pics 1 & 2 ) to attach that strap to. at least nothing with a surface that the screw you are showing could grip to.

The pull strap is attached with a 4-40 screw to the latch,using the the hole that is now vacant,when the latch rod was removed.No drilling,No welding.
