Installed a fresh set of Gt styled door panels on the teener over the weekend.
I got the confidence, following Aaron's thread,as he made it seeem soooo easy.Yeah right.
Well Aaron, the recover went real well til I got up to the tuck & roll.It kicked my A@* so bad,I threw in the towel, and let a local upholster finish the job.
I initially got 2 sets of door pulls to compare prices.Cheapest was from fiatparts.com 20 bucks for the pair.
The leather door strap was made by a local leather guy,6 bucks for the pair.
Finally, the bezel for the door strap I copied from AJ's site cause he actually has measurements for it.I lasered it here at work, and made a forming die to hammer it's shape.
Not a lot in it,but at least it is finally done.
Anyway,Aaron's thread is a really good one. Thanks for writing it.

I'm gonna give it a good try.
The hardest part about making to bezels, was adding extra material to the tabs after they were formed inward.
You see, even after the center portion was formed to make the"hole"that the strap goes thru, there still isn't enough material to go thru the door panel, and the bend the tang around the back side to hold the bezel securely against the panel.
I tackwelded a couple of extra strips to the tang, and then they formed around the back. Then I painted everything semi-gloss black for appearance.
It came out ok,but still a small PITA.

Yep,
Fiat 600 pulls.
I got one pair from Treadway @Gtperformance,$35.00 a pair.,1 pair from Bruce @fiatparts.com for $20.00 a pair.Same identical door pull.Same pulls as the ebay ones in the Porsche bag to.
And b4 anyone asks,I gave the extra set to Brad Mayuer as he helped me out with some parts.
The leather pulls came from a local leather worker. He had this neat tool for stripping leather,I watched him cut them from a thick pair of motorcycle chaps. He made both pieces in less than 10 minutes.I had them made long,so as to trim to length when I got home. They are 3/4" wide by BTW.

Did you die them or did he?

Jun 26 2006, 11:32 AM
They are actually Fiat 500 door pulls. Do a Google search, there is a guy selling Fiat parts on his website $12.50 a set, I think. I got my stuff from Original Fit Interiors, 541-769-4460. They have everything you need to make RS or 914-6GT replica door panels except the bezels that Ron made.
If you get around to doing a run of them I'll take a set.
Thanks,
BJ

Ron your doors look fantastic. You did a very nice job on them. I, too would have to be on the "bezel list". I think I would try using black screws though. the brights are traditional but a bit too flashy for me. Great work Ron. MSG L

Ron, I'd take a pr of bezels (and straps) if you did a run. I'd also prefer to weld on my own tabs if it makes it cheaper;)

Can anyone post how you attach the leather strap to the door catch inside the door frame? I have a couple ideas but how did Porsche do it? How did you do it?
RON S.
Jul 5 2006, 12:41 PM
I just knew that someone wanted to know, how the strap is attached.
It is bolted on to the inner latch using a 4-40 x 1/2" long stainless, phillips head screw.
Start by drilling an access hole adjacent to the latch underneath.
I hope the pics are in order.
