Hey all
My name is mike, I’ve been a member of 914world (914club) since march 2005 when my son Kenny (a.k.a. orange914) bought his first 914. at present he owns an early 1973 that is a keeper. This is why I’m researching this particular 914

From what I’ve learned the first 1000 1973 914’s were slated for the European market but sent to the U.S. due to early 73 demand. They have some unique features that I’m attempting to research. i want to thank many of you who have inputted so far. beerchug.gif

If you have ANY info. On this car or have noticed any oddities drop a line. Please e-mail me

Thanks, mike driving.gif

Thanks to all those who have responded and participated in my fact gathering on the first 1000 1973 Porsche 914’s. There are 43 registered owners on the 914world.com at present. Generally these cars are known as “first 1000”. I’ve been informed by auto Atlanta that they have found there are a few more than 1000 sent over. It does stop however by at least v.i.n. #4732901100. These cars where originally built and equipped for the European market. Because of high demand in the U.S. in 1973, the first 1000+ V.I.N.# 914’s where slated for Germany but sent to California dealers. From my findings I’m impressed with this nitch 914 because it is in my opinion a very balanced 914. By that I mean it’s got the benefits of a factory improvements and upgrades that come with a few years of production. It’s especially desirable for auto crossing due to factory upgrades and is lighter than U.S. 73 and up models, and is without the heavy smog equipment that comes with later models.

The below information is a collection of owners, history and facts about this car (4732900000 thru 4732901100?). There are 43 members in the 914 roster that have v.i.n. #’s that fall in this category and have been contacted. This info has been submitted by club members from first hand knowledge of their own early 1973 914’s:

Here are some of the unique facts I’ve learned, any additional info would be great!:

1 vinyl on a-pillars (around windshield)
2 front hubs non-hub centric (72 earlier style)
3 turn signal switch/wiring harness (72 earlier style)
4 doors lightweight/non reinforced, early (72 earlier) window regulators
5 1.7 liter fuel injected engine
6 Side shift transmission
7 15x5.5 dealer installed “Dan gurney” wheels, sometimes called western spoke rims, some may have had pedrinis
8 1970-1972 headlight switch and wiring
9 1970-1972 light rain tray
10 Sold out of California dealerships
11 front bumpers had 73 “tits” and holes for European license plate

He sold the car to me in 1980. I am one lucky guy, even if I did pay full book for the car.

Well it seems that I have at least one of the 1000's : Nemo- 73 0164, 1.7 , tailshift linkage, side shift trans, reenforced doors . First 914 I bought , still have , rust around floor pans , battery tray / hell hole not too bad . Probably use for parts. will look over for more #'s . Ghost - 73 1042 , presently a VERY good roller I plan on getting together to drive , newwer paint , Ivory White , forgot the code , factory front and rear swaybars !!! , interior is gutted , probably had console as the heater lever is offset for console . All numbers match , windshield post , rt frt fender , drv dr tag, head light area , had 2.0 Fuchs. Also have two 72 , one came from out of Calif. for sure , still has Lic pte on frt, guy I got it from moved here from there, it's got fbrgls rear flares, slope nose , and strangely enough RUST around all the floor edges and tunnel .No hell or console rust , just the bottom bad , no engine or trans . Frt hubs drilled for 5 lug ,7x15 fake Fuchs, spare 7x15 for trunk , adapters on rear 8x15 fake Fuchs . Will check on all the numbers when time permits.

I wish I had an earlier 73 for the non-hub centric front rotors, given that I picked up a set of early Pedrinis that I had intended to use. Mine's later, 4732913367, but I still have white headlight surrounds and aluminum door sill plates.

BTW all - "VIN #...." is repetitively redundant, since the N in VIN stands for "number"

OK - now to screw up how we're figuring out the first 1000 or so produced .... dry.gif

Apparently we cannot go by the VIN alone for when a 914 was built to see if it was among the first 1000 in the 1973 MY, because from what I've learned this week -
Karmann built & painted the shells with the VIN stamped on the Chassis, then sent them to the VW Osnabruck Final Assembly Plant,

... then once there, the painted shells were pulled for final assembly NOT by VIN order - but rather according to what paint colors the orders were from customers & the Distributors, and the ones destined for the good ole USA had the VIN labels with build dates affixed to the driver-side door jambs.

Therefore, an earlier VIN could've been built after a later one, such as:

4732901102 - Built 9/72 (later than the 2 below, but it has A-pillar Vinyl)

4732901650 - Built 8/72

4732901954 - Built 8/72 (my 914-2.0 below) ...

You can read more on this topic here:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103085
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103136

.

So I'd suggest that folks ADD their Build Dates to their VINs here.

.

My early-73 914S / 914-2.0 - VIN 4732901954 - Built 8/72 - matching GA000424:
> Originally L80E Light Ivory & the #31 Beige (501/502) Leatherette/Basketweave with Dark Tan (503) Loop Pile Carpet, Full Appearance & Performance Group sets of options.
> This is the 3rd Repaint Color - Antracite Dark Grey Metallic (5/80 by me), & prior repaints were Copper Metallic (8/76 by me), & Bonze or Gold Metallic (by PO/OO or dealer prior to my purchse in 12/75).
> BTW - I will be restoring it to L80E & it's original factory fitment, including retrofitting back-in the: fog lights/grills/switch, center console/gauges & a set of 5 Fuchs 2L Alloy Wheels - which were "mysteriously missing" when I bought it in 1975.

interesting

i guess the first obvious giveaway would be the vinyl a=pillars, of course many p.o.'s have removed this. so i wander what the latest build date is. but are there cars slated for europe but shipped to u.s. in the first or are some non exported? any euro early's out there?

I wish! drooley.gif wub.gif

Nope - I've only ever had 5 cars & I'm 57+ now, & that grey one was my 3rd car!

I was using that Signal Orange early-73 2L & Sahara Beige Steve's on here at the O&H "Few & Rare..." as examples to go by, in getting mine back to original, & I just lucked out that the buyer lives close by! ... still haven't seen him show up at our local PCA cars & coffee deal though! dry.gif I always go camera in hand, just in case! biggrin.gif
Tom_T

BTW Mike & Kenny - apparently the VINs were produced out of order, so the first cars were more correctly represented as 8/72 or 9/72 build dates on the door jamb VIN sticker, &/or by the Chassis no. on the Karmann plate in the front of L door jamb. This Signal Orange 914-2.0 is an earlier VIN than mine & built in 9/72, whereas mine was stickered as an 8/72 build date. More on that topic is here:

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103085
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103136

When I strip mine for body work & repainting, I'll check if it has early or late doors, A-pillar vinyl (evidence before repaints maybe under the trim/gaskets?), etc.

Cheers! beerchug.gif
Tom

BTW - the owner of this one avidfanjpl/John & I have decoded his chassis no. build date & mine, and his chassis no. is about a week before my 8/31/72 chassis no. - but his VIN is a 9/72, while mine is an earlier 8/72 - even with his VIN being 582 earlier than mine!!?? blink.gif

IPB Image

BTW - now that I cleaned the old overspray off, you can see the L80E inside the dots/etc., under the Sahara Beige paint or tan tinted primer, then Gold (L97G or L97H) from when I bought it in Dec. 75, Copper Metallic (L99K) that I had it repainted in Aug. 76, then the 911/930 Anthracite Gray Metallic that I repainted it the last time in April/May 80 - but it's going back to the original L80E Light Ivory in my resto now. I'll check for any evidence of a past A-pillar vinyl when I strip down the windshield frame in the process, but with all that "personalization" of paint colors over its first 13+ years, I'm not holding my breath for anything remaining, unless it's caught under the trim or something.

This shows the oddity of VINs & US-DOT VIN Sticker Dates vs. Chassis No. build dates on our 914s!

Paint appears to be the original color. However, it appears the wrong Karmen plate was put on the door jam. The body numbers are off by two numbers. I would love to find the Karmen plate with the stamp that is in the trunk which is 5049599. The plate in door jam is 5049601.?? L20E which is orange but the car is green

My dad bought this car new in 1973. He arrived at my graduation from Ohio U in the 914, and being the spoiled brat that I am, I told him he shouldn't have... He replied" I didn't. I just put you through College. Get your own."
He sold the car to me in 1980. I am one lucky guy, even if I did pay full book for the car.

Niklas - here you go - close-ups, & next post (due to pic post size limit).

The first 1000 may go higher since this is VIN ....1102, perhaps to 1500 or 2000+/- - who knows, but is only the early 73 MY 914s built in 2nd half of 1972 as far as anyone has seen.

FYI - this is John/avidfanjpl 73 2L now & these were from the seller's ad in 09.

Note that curling up of the lower edge of the vinyl on the A-pillar is a common problem, which is probably why they used the thin lower chrome strips on the Sails at the Rollbar, and perhaps partly why they stopped the A-pillar look (aside from cost reduction).

I'm amazed at the hammer and anvil tech. back then in coach builing fit & finish standards, compare the body alignment to even a kia nowdays. Not bad mouthing the 914, it was a product of the times. Wood truck boards etc. I'm guessing it was just a cost thing. I do think it gave the car a better less top heavy look.

Ahhh, the 70's Mike - land of the vinyl "Landau" tops on anything that rolled! biggrin.gif

I even had one on the big ole 69 Pontiac Ventura 4dr I bought from my Dad during college in 71 when my 68 Opel Kadette's 1.1L engine blew!

Still trying to find evidence if my early73 2L VIN...1954 had the A-pillar vinyl or not, & will report back later.

Is your Orange 914-2.0 listed at Hemmings yet?
If so - then post a link here so interested parties can drooley.gif & maybe plan to bid!

Hey Mike, seriously - I was hoping you'd keep on the early 73 info topic as a way to keep active on the baord here, and was hoping to convince Pat Garvey & "the powers that be" on here to have it as a nailed topic in the O&H forum.

That is, if you're game to have a semi-official role here! biggrin.gif

Sure, semi official status sounds good. It was fun digging up the info on these. Your input really helped out too.

I'm really glad the car went to a great owner. Never know when another 914 may show up here, so no plans to cut and run. Loved the 6 years our family was involved with them. Not sure if you've seen my newest venture.

Mike, your new venture looks really cool - especially with your "Orange" so prominently displayed! biggrin.gif

I did finally find your ad in the June Hemmings.

So keep up the good work - both on your new venture & on the early 73 914's here!

As to a future 914 in your stable ..... idea.gif ..... it would make an interesting build thread for an adapted 914 which you could drive, maybe off of a Sporto transplant into a solid 73-74 2.0 project car or solid driver who's starting cost &/or provenance/condition/CW-ness wouldn't make it prohibitively expensive to do the conversion to non-original trim (for example, your Orange was waaay too nice to bastardize that way) ...... maybe adding acc & brake hand controls on the wheel & an auto-clutch Sportomatic (still shift but no clutching).

IIRC there was a member who got a Sporto & its Pedal Cluster from a 911 or 912, and added the Sporto to his stick 914 to make it easier for him to drive it (knee problems or something IIRC). Go look .... type.gif

Just a thought! shades.gif
