Sweet - when my lotto $$ hits I want to replace my LE front with one of these!
Will this be the first "street 914" to run this front air dam/bumper?
I was thinking it would need 1-2" section cut out to be street-able and not scrape bottom at every driveway in a low 914. Looks great! beerchug.gif

Yeah if I still lived in NYC I couldn't have that. NJ roads aren't as bad so I should be ok. I wanted the splitter as well but though I might be pushing my luck. driving.gif

Are those 10 inch x 17's on the rear? and are the headlights you have legally not too bright and what brand are they? Looks good, for me it's really hard not to get filler 3/16 in spots on that much fabrication in the bottom of the curves and the arc of the fender on the rear, once the guidecoating starts. I'm curious as to how they look under the bottom and do people ever lok there? I'm a under the bottom type of guy.
ChrisFoley
We worked on the turn signals some more today.
First we tried your idea:

The turn signal interferes with the headlight a bit, but more importantly:

It looked like some magic smoke started coming out of the new assembly so we shut off the headlight and found that the heat of the headlight melted the plastic turnsignal cover; guess its not really carbon fiber, lol.

So we did the right thing and mounted the running light/turn signal (without the plastic cover) inside the bottom of the light bucket:

Now we have to figure out why the magic smoke is coming out of the light switch on the dash. headbang.gif

Get an amp meter inline Chris...you may need relays...
Bigger wire may also help...but not the light switch.
Rich
ejm
The headlight bulbs are 55 watts so they draw about 4.5 amps, well within the design limits of the stock wiring and switch. The smoke is coming from the dimmer rheostat so it's unrelated to exterior lighting. Somewhere there's a instrument lighting wire that wasn't insulated properly after one of the mods this car has seen in the past.

Lol Rich,
I don't need any of that stuff.
I have Ed! happy11.gif

Problem solved!
Another PO issue taken care of.
The gauges mounted in the ashtray opening were forced into position, bending one of the gauge illumination light sockets, so an intermittent short occurred.
Nothing serious.

Well, yes. I got a house call from Ed. He drove his teener to my house a couple of years back (in January) when I got my first 914 and helped me diagnose a non-running L-Jet car (bad dual relay) and get it running. smilie_pokal.gif
JoeSharp
I'm hoping that Ed will make a House Call out here in May. The 15th thru the 18th. It would be good to see him at the WCR. I'v had him in my car at two other west cost events.

Well the wiring under the dash isn't the most inspiring thing I have scene. Looked a bit tangled up to me. I did very gently put in a Engman fuse panel thru the wiring.

I do plan on bringing the car back maybe sometime this summer for a day or 2 with fresh gauges. Get rid of that ash tray mounted gauge and put in a triple gauge and fresh tach and speedo.

Ray is supposed to be hooking me up with a early 914 backpad and seat, for which I will be forever grateful(I didn't think those were possible to get). Just add a lemans seat and leather covered dash and the whole car will be looking good.

Just why do the wheels I want got to be so expensive. I will roll on what I have for year I guess. dry.gif

I would like to say we have started re-assembly of the trim etc., but first things first...

The transmission got stuck in two gears at once while the car has been here. I might have ignored it if this only happened once - but not twice. There is something definitely wrong.

So today Ed pulled the 916 trans apart, and it wasn't too hard to find the fault.

This little "bullet" is an interlock to prevent two gears from being selected simultaneously on the 3-4 and 5-R shift forks. It wasn't "there" when the box was opened up.

Ed found it ... here:

The thru hole is the bore for the 3-4 shift rod. The "bullet" belongs between the 3-4 and 5-R rods down here:

That's it. Problem solved! Everything else looks good inside, so its already going back together as I post this.
turboman808
I am sitting hear staring at these pictures you posted and trying to make sense of it in my head but I give up. LOL

Just glad I can run the car for the rest of the summer. driving.gif
ChrisFoley

This is a different 915 box - essentially the same thing.
The arrow points to the 3-4 shift rod; it is in the hole shown in the previous pictures.
The "bullet" interlock piece is supposed to go below the shift rod, but we found it above the shift rod.
ChrisFoley
Since that interlock prevents 3rd and 5th from being engaged at the same time, with it out of place the potential for disaster was definitely there.

Oh as far as that goes it's not 100% legal but I think I know some ways to resolve that. 2 that I can think of.

One is cut out the housing so it takes a H4 bulb. Lot's of HID kits with hi/low that produce less heat then what is there now so that might be the best route down the road. This would be pretty dam slick if it worked.

IPB Image
or this one that moves forwards and back to make the high beam
IPB Image

2nd would be just drilling for another H3 bulb into the headlight bucket. Doesn't really need to be aimed, just kinda there to fill in where the cutoff it. Probably not the best way to go.
Chris Hamilton
You could do like my HIDs, just make sure you use a high quality kit or you won't have proper cutoffs and you'll blind other drivers. My headlights are aimed to give me good coverage but they don't look any brighter than normal ones coming down the road.

IPB Image
Rand
How about lenses? I remember Tony was having some glass ones made when Neo was doing the headlight in signal bucket thing. I never heard the final results.

Do you have a hi and low beam?

I know Neo914 did this with the hella micro DE HID kit. He doesn't have hi beams thoufh. I just got the regular Micro DE because I knew at some point I wanted to make something that had a hi and low beam.

I would get another pair of Micro DE lights and some h4 bulbs and try and figure out how they can fit together. confused24.gif
Chris Hamilton
Those are the Micro DE HID. Just low beams, but I don't drive at night that much anyways, and where I do, I don't get to use high beams.

These things are brighter than my H4 replacements in the stock doors that I used to use, and they produce less glare to drive past. It's a great combo. I just need to get some clear lenses to put on there and a full coverage hood from sheridan.

I also had to use dual 3W yellow LEDs below each one for enough brightness on the turn signals.

So pretty much the same thing just you have the HID kit. I wanted to at least attempt to get a H4 hid bulb in a Micro DE case down the road. I just don't know how well those moving bulbs are going to create the cut off.

The micro DE does have a built in cutoff. It is probably possible to position the moving HID buld so that in the normal position it would use the bulbs own cuttoff and then move forward past the cuttoff to give the brights.

I am less then impressed with pretty much every HID kit I have seen to be honest. But the DE cases I can get for around $120 and a kit fo around $175. If I can get it to work that would be great. If not then I won't have wasted $600.

Thankfully Chris did all the hard stuff. smile.gif
URY914
Chris,
you know we always check out what it in the background of the pics posted here. In post #126 you have the orange car on a wheel dolly of some sort. Are the wheels bolted to the cars A-arm mounting holes and are not connected to the rear wheels?

Tell us more biggrin.gif

Nice. Do have a daylight closeup of the installation?
Again, I know Tony was working on clear glass lenses that could handle the heat. Wish I knew what happened with that.

Daylight looks like this. These are dual 3W leds driven in parallel, so half power each.

Looks a little to far forward.

I think what Chris did was pretty slick. If I remember he wasn't completely happy with it being just flat but if someone ever comes along with a nice rounded cover that would look great. I got acrylic sheets to cover it with.

I had to search to find the pictures he sent me but I think in a few days the whole front of the car is gonna look pretty sick.

Chris Hamilton
Yeah, I had to move it forward or the sides of the housing were cutting off too much of the peripheral light. I would have liked to mount them flush.

The car is finally set to go home.
This is what it looks like all done.
