I'm planning on bringing Kermee with the box in it to have you take a look at the oil as it drains & then we'll pull the stack for inspection & replace whatever is necessary. Also got another box of unknown condition I'm bringing...

Doing a remove and install at the clinic is a no go. I will be tasked with 8 people and unless you can get it out and in, and have clearance from Scotty as I don’t know his space situation, but know it’s limited, there is no way to accomplish this.

Thanks for the info about the shiny new hardware! I was wondering about that... Heading out to garage shortly to finish disassembly of intermediate plate.

Is there a 'special tools list' that I should think about packing as I stare at my roller tool box, wondering what I should take?

... like a 'big azz wrench' or special deep socket so we don't have to use an adjustable like A saw in a thread somewhere here... Hangars and parts boxes to keep parts organized? Snap ring pliers?

I just spotted a broken race on the inside of the intermediate plate, maybe the reverse gear, bearings were held in place till I took it apart... I assume this is one of the bearings in the kit?

Sorry I'm behind schedule, hopefully pics coming soon!

Where did you get the idea that you had to do a full tear down? That all happens at the clinic. I hope you saved th gasket so we can measure it. No special tools needed, I bring all of that. Bearings in the kit are both roller bearings and both int plate bearings.

You can look in my signature below for links to last clinics for more clarity. The instructions are the same every time.

Hope I did it right... Here is a link to photos of the gear stack. Hopefully all is good / re-build-able. I had the impression this was the minimum needed to do to get the stack out. I have the gasket.

Cool. I just need to see the ring and pink on teeth to assure it’s buildaenim current form. If either are junk, you would either need to find another box, or I have to take yours with me as I won’t have time to set it p a r/p at the clinic and likely won’t have my tools. Looks ok in pics.

No special tools. Regular stuff like 13mm socket, etc.

Looking forward to the clinic this weekend. But not the 7 hour drive smile.gif. It's still on, right?
Dr Evil
Hell yes it’s on! I also have a 7hr drive.
bahnzai
You guys almost make me feel guilty for coasting in around 6 hours smile.gif

At least I don’t have to work today too, on top of the drive, like Mike is!
LowBridge
we'll be on the road in about 45 minutes... so see you'll tomorrow beerchug.gif
JmuRiz
Make sure that shop heater is working, it's going to be darn cold this weekend and next week!!!
Dr Evil
Funny story, I got today off so slept in a little, getting things loaded and ready right now. Plan is hit road at 12. Sleeping at shop tonight. For heat stuff, I have a huge torpedo heater that is propane powered so we should be fine. Bring warm clothes, tho. I think most of us from the north lands get that, tho.
billsimmeth
I live about 2 hrs away, so was planning on driving down tomorrow AM. Still planning on a 9AM start?
lvnzdrm
I am about 20 minutes from the Shop, if any one want to get together for dinner tonight, let me know.

I'm a little less than 3 hours away. Looks like a little snow is moving in. I think they said an inch throughout MD 2AM - 8AM. See you all tomorrow morning.
iankarr
Just arrived in Richmond. See y’all in the am...
Dr Evil
I’m getting gas in Goochland. About 1 hr out. See y’all 9 am.
Dr Evil
Hitting Waffle House at 8. Anyone is invited. The one closest to the shop wink.gif

Awesome event that Mike's putting on, benches covered with gearboxes being refreshed, top quality instruction & much humor to boot. Here's one layout after disassembly.Click to view attachment
Mine however not so good, ouch! the good Doctor will have to take it with him for a fresh r/p install.
Mblizzard
Ouch! I almost came again just to walk through the build. It was amazing how much I learned and forgot!
billsimmeth
Awesome day! Hard to believe we got all those boxes rebuilt in one day (a long one).. I learned a shit load and had a great time doing it!

Thanks Mike for putting this on and Scotty B for hosting. And thanks to all the fellow attendees who lent a hand, shared tools, supplies, knowledge and humor.

Highly recommended!
Tbrown4x4
Totally agree^^ . I went as an observer in Shelton, WA. Learned a bunch, and met a lot of great people. We need to keep Mike traveling and teaching.
Dr Evil
This was a great group! I had a blast and it was great to reconnect with my Porsche friends. Can’t believe I broke my finger on Fri and managed to get this event done in record time.
nditiz1
I had a great time with some good people. Thanks to the Doc and Scotty.

Now I have a sorted tranny, next will be to finish putting my motor back together, install both back in, and drive the hell out of it.
iankarr
Awesome time! Thanks Doc, for being so generous and patient...and Scotty...you were a great host. The coffee bar was much appreciated after (and before) a 7 hour drive. Impressive that the Evil one was able to handle all of us newbies while he was down a digit. Especially getting those snap rings on.

Here are some pics from the day. I wanted to make a youtube video, but it was nonstop cleaning and building! Happy to host one of these in the NY burbs anytime...

what a fantastic time and thanks to Scotty B for hosting in a super location and Dr Evil for putting on a killer class (no one tells you how funny he is).

I also enjoyed getting to know new World memebers...

my son and I and my son and my Dad/Granddad

I also want to thank Mike and Scotty. I learned so much and also enjoyed meeting more 914world members. Thanks to all the guys that lent me a hand when needed. It was the most fun I have ever had while working so hard. I hoping to see some of you at Hershey or Ockteenerfest in Helen, GA later this year.

Ben, thanks for being a good sport. Your issues lead to a target being painted on you. biggrin.gif

Hard to say. Plans for the immediate future actually have me closing shop for about 6mo. I need to finish current house so I can sell it, and start/finish garage extension on new house so I have a place to keep all of my stuff. On top of that, I broke my finger right before the clinic and it still aint right. Im like the Frodo of transmission repair....it has slowed me down. Currently I have a 915 side shift conversion I am de bugging, RR on an R/P for wndsrfr, core build to finish and ship to Jim Hoyland, same for jmalone, and finishing up a 912 rebuild this week. I haven't accepted any more work at the moment. However, my plans are to do multiple clinics as able, when able. New job also sucks as I am treated just like any other state employee (no vacation time typical for doctors, just 3 wks sick/vac/yr). Just found out the extent to my Mom's newly diagnosed breast cancer so likely having to burn time up to go to San Diego, too. That may allow for a clinic there if I can find a location to hold it. That would also help me pay for the trip and likely lost hours at work.

So, lots going on wink.gif

Sorry to hear about your mom.
LowBridge
sorry to hear about your mother... I hope the treatment goes well.

ditto on the news.

Open offer to use my new garage space, barn and lot to host a mid Atlantic clinic. Just outside Baltimore, (the good side) Easy access of I70.

There is a good side to Baltimore???!

Thanks for the well wishes. So far, Im not worried, just sucks a bit. Treatment will not be fun. Such is life. Being in the medical field numbs me a bit.
crash914
its all relative.
wndsrfr
Yikes, lots going on for sure....here's hoping for the best with your mom's treatment....

Circling back, getting ready to re-install my rebuilt transaxle. (Hey - every time I went to the garage this winter it was cold...) ;-)

I have a 'left over' part. (Pic attached) Pea-Nut shaped. calling Dr. Evil... Please tell me it's not too far into it...

Maybe this is what I get for being a wize azz - Dr Evil made it so I have 1 forward gear and 5 reverse?!
Dr Evil
I answered your email. Based on what we find, I’ll write it up here. I am thinking this is a spare and there is an easy test.
Movin6
Thanks! I'm pretty sure it's not a spare, looks like part # 901.303.211.01 "Detent". #20 on attached diagram.

What is the test? (Transaxle is still out of the car.)

“20.

If you pull the shift console, then try to see if you can move the 1 and 2nd rods you encounter into a gear. That piece locks in the other rod when you shift. So, shift the first rod fore or aft, then try to shift the other rod. If it will shift, that part is missing. If it won’t, then that was someone’s spare that made it into your parts. ”

OK, thanks. The shift console is still off, but looking in I can only see one bronze shift fork. This is a modified side-shifter. Do I need to take off the bottom plate at the back end?

No need to remove anything. Please re-read my instructions from this step and let me know what needs clarified.
"shift the first rod fore or aft, then try to shift the other rod (next rod in). If it will shift, that part is missing. If it won’t, then that was someone’s spare that made it into your parts. " Ill bet you $100 that what you have is a spare from one of the parts boxes. The fork you see is on the rod I was talking about. Move the fork/slider fore or aft to lock that in a gear, then try to shift the other rod/fork/slider. If you can even budge the next rod/fork/slider then that piece is missing.
