Hello,
This is a thread about late hours in my garage trying to get 1970 914-6 back to life.
There are already hundreds pics in here:
http://www.harrasteet.1g.fi/kuvat/OmaPossu+II/One question, what are these holes for? Spot welding?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is those holes are for when they dipped the bodies at the factory.

Are the flares steel or fiberglass? What is the serial number? I am constantly trying to find my old one.
Add the serial number to the database please!

Then to the biggest problem of this car. Drivers side front corner has some signs of past accident. It's been repaired badly. It's more than inch up and and bent little right too. That can be taken care with "celeste bench".
Front boot floor has some bad crinkles (right word?) and inner fender is not right shape. How to take care these?
Some pics there:

The celette bench will get the basic attachment points back to factory specs.
The wrinkled sheet metal will need to be replaced or hammered back to where it belongs.
I'm in the same boat with my original /6. Tons of sheet metal that needs replacing or massaging. A good automotive body guy will know how and what to do.

Yes, that's the chassis number. Also usually written with crayon on the backside of the dash sub-frame.

A quick search using the keywords "+chassis +number" got quite a few results, including the one below.

I find it hard to imagine anyone would try to change that number - most people don't even know it's there. And I've seen them in at least 2 different spots

I did research on this over the years and it does have the correct numbers for a 1970 914-6 as it is discribed in the link Andy posted!
Notice the chassis number is 2045 and the vin number is 2344 so they are within 299 chassis!

the left one
Jeffs9146
Nov 13 2011, 11:20 AM
It is the one on the left and the part# is 914.351.801.00!
The one in the parts catiloge only shows 5 holes around the center in the photo but I would guess that is just to represent the differences!

The holes in the floor are definitely for the arms of the spot welder to get into position. For instance, think about the center tunnel and how it's welded to the floor pan. Also the cross members were spot welded and those holes would've been used for that as well.
Our 914's were never dipped for paint (or anything else). That technology wasn't widespread in factories until after the 914 was out of production.

One question (not my car), are all 2,0l four cylinder 914:s with D-jetronic? With extra point's in distributor?
Dave_Darling
Nov 27 2011, 06:51 PM
Originally, yes.
Only the 1.8s were not D-jet from the factory.

When we talked about it I was sure it was changed due to the serial number on the trans!
Here is one of the e-mail conversations
2011/1/26 Jeff Tuck <jeffs9146@yahoo.com>
I do not know anything about the original transmission! It was swapped out before I got it and the person who sold it to me didn't know anything either! I would try to get a COA and see if the transmission number is listed! There was a guy keeping track of all 914-6's in the USA and I spoke with him once. He told me the car was sold in Palo Alto so you may be able to call the dealership and get some history?? (just a thought!)
Don't forget to put fluid in the transmission before you install it!

Yes, so it was!
Sorry, english is not my main language! I'll ask another way, if I have tail sift gearbox can I change it to side shift without changing transmission case (shell)?
I'll asked Finnish Porsche dealer to find out my transmission number but nothing come out. Have to ask direct from Zuffenhausen.

Yes you can!
You need a side shift tail cone with parts, shifter plate, shifter, shifter bar and bushings.
I'm sure the good Dr. has more detail but that still wont make it a numbers matching transmission!
The number on the 914-6 transmission starts with 914/01!
Link to 901 detail information!
