I picked up this 71 a few months ago, and have started a full restoration. It appears to have been repainted at least three times. The car was originally Metallic Gold. I'm going to try and get it to as close to how it was born, and will be shooting for a number 2+ car.

It is currently at the media blaster, then off for metal work, and body/paint. smile.gif

It looked pretty good. However, the car was repainted at least three times. There must be twelve layers of paint. It also has the normal "Hell Hole" issues, and has the wrong interior.

I've been chasing a ton of correct parts. It's going to be an adventure to get it back to original.

Excellent! I look forward to seeing it move along the restoration process. I am also glad that someone with an original '71 metallic gold car will be returning it to the original color - takes the pressure off of me. My '71 was originally gold also but will not be going back to gold. My car is being media blasted this month. Best wishes.

I think the car may have had a small fire or two in it's life. When I tore down the motor. It was covered in what looked like melted plastic. Not sure what it was. The gas tank area was covered in what looked like fire extinguisher powder as well.

I checked compression before pulling the motor out and #3 was at 40lbs. Found out that the head burned through. I tracked down a rebuilt set of 1.7 heads in NC (Thanks Bill), and am having Pat at Vee W Unlimited build it back up.

I'm curious to see what is under all the paint and the sections of the car near the front that appeared to be in a fire at one point?

Got the body back from the media blaster today. Didn't find anything too scarry under all that paint. It should be in etch primer in a day or two, then the metal work will begin.

Mine is Metallic Gold as well! Great vintage color. It was a $136 option back in 1971. Cheers for keepin' it real, You will love it. Make sure you get the right shade...

It's been quite awhile, but the body is getting closer to paint. A few months back while stripping the rear trunk lid, it was determined that the car had been repainted SEVEN times! As of yesterday the car has it's first coat of primer, and should be in paint in a couple weeks.

Just a few more pictures of metal work.

Your attention to detail is impressive!

Great progress. beerchug.gif Keep the pics coming.

agree.gif It's not often that someone who is new to the board does everything so meticulously and correctly! This is really good stuff, and likely on the way to becoming a "Classic" thread. beerchug.gif This is the kind of quality work that I aspire to be able to do someday.

CptTripps
Bravo sir! Takes a lot of patience (that I don't have) to do something like that. I can't wait to see what you end up with!
boxsterfan
This work is fantastic!! Did you have the insides of the longs sprayed with a rust encapsulator?

Thanks everyone for the compliments. Yes, boxsterfan, the insides have been treated. This project has been an adventure. I almost thought I had lost EVERY piece of hardware off the car. I gave them to a guy to be zinc plated. He ended up losing his job and I lost contact with him for several months. We were able to reconnect and I'm hoping to get everything back this Wednesday.
rangrbob
Well I did get the hardware back, but it was never plated. Anyone have a good source for yellow zinc plating in Northern Colorado? (Fort Collins area)

Not much update on the body. It is in primer though, and the driver's door is getting re-skinned.

While waiting I've been working on my other project.

Anyone have a picture of how the passenger seat bracket on the floor is supposed to look like. The PO had later seats in it and drilled three holes all the way through the floor. I'm not sure how it should be, or how the seat actually mounts.

Can't believe I'm just finding this thread! Great job!

Quite a few of us in Northern CO, I'm in Erie.

Metallic gold is such a great color.

Can't wait to see this car when it's done!

Keep up the great work.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of this car in metallic gold.

Well after close to two years at the body shop, the car is back in the garage. However, it is still not Gold! I decided to get it back and take it to another shop to finish it. I just could'nt wait any longer. It is now scheduled for the guys at Custom Auto here in Loveland to take over the painting task in September.

Real close. The body just needs wet sanding, and a few tweaks here and there. The Hoods and Drivers' door still need some metal work.
rangrbob
Sent it off to the new shop last week. The guys got right on it, and progress is moving along.

I may be calling on some of you Colorado guys for help figuring out how to put it back together. smile.gif

Man that looks so nice when they get fresh paint on them. That was the original color of my Six. Looking forward to seeing the whole tub in gold. Nice work.

Looks great!! I also have a Metallic Gold '71. Needs pretty much what you've been doing. I'll use you for inspiration!

Cairo94507
Sweet! How exciting to get some color on the car. I am so jealous.

looks fantastic! thanks for posting the photo's... now the real funs begins. Keep the pics rollin? Cheers beerchug.gif
Kraftwerk
Yes! Another metallic gold car saved! It is an amazing color on these cars and looks great in person. Looks like your painter matched the original shade of gold perfectly. Thank you for sharing the pictures.

tbrown4x4 and I are right there with you: Looks great!! I also have a Metallic Gold '71. Would be nice to do the same as what you've been doing someday, when I need to. Wonder how many '71 Golds are out there?

I really like that color. Keep the pics coming!
KELTY360
Fantastic! There is a body line that runs from the forward base of the targa bar along the top of the fender that I really like on the 914. It gets obscured by shiny trim when vinyl sail covering is used but it flows so nice with painted sails.
rangrbob
Here are a couple shots of the car out in the sun before cutting and buffing. smile.gif
