At this phase in their life the clutch tube failures are pretty common.

This is so common with 914's. Prior owners attempt to fix but they only look at the symptom (the cracked bulkhead) and then slap a "fix" onto it. Meanwhile they never address the root cause (the broken clutch tube restraint) that is leading to all the flexing in the 1st place.

Nice job fixing the clutch tube at both ends! It will be good to go for decades!

Known more than a few 914's where the front support tab had long broken off which would cause the rear firewall to continue to break away.

Thanks a lot guys!

So, I then worked on my engine side panel:

Hi Antoine
The second sentence of your intro says it all.
You have a passion for metal working and it shows.
Beautiful work. Great progress. Excellent commitment.

Making all these replacement panels is truly impressive!
FL000
You make it look so easy! Enjoy seeing what you can do with basic tools. Great progress aktion035.gif

Thanks a lot guys for the support!! Really appreciated !

So, I think the next step was quite logical..the battery tray biggrin.gif
I did built it by hand couple months ago:
IPB Image

So it was time to adjust and weld it, first the bottom part:
IPB Image

And then the top:
IPB Image

IPB Image

All done and all fits great:
IPB Image

I then found one last hole on the firewall:
IPB Image

That I welded close:
IPB Image

And now we have a nice engine bay/right long:
IPB Image

IPB Image

Starting to look good!

Antoine
TRS63
I have more to share with you biggrin.gif

This corner was ugly:
IPB Image

So I decided to take care of it:
IPB Image

And welded:
IPB Image

And the outside part, before:
IPB Image

Starting with the bottom part:
IPB Image

IPB Image

Welded:
IPB Image

And the top part:
IPB Image

And here we are:

Brilliant, just brilliant. Really enjoy seeing the creation process. Keep it coming beerchug.gif

Nice to see this one still chugging along. My own project has slowed to a crawl- life getting in the way. This one gives me the motivation to keep plugging along.

To say that I’m impressed would be a huge understatement. Thanks for the activation energy to do my minuscule metalwork project ignored for a decade.
TRS63
Thanks a lot! And really happy if my posts can motivate someone to start on it, metalshaping is so great wub.gif

So, then comes a big step..the quarter panel!! biggrin.gif

I made it myself of course.. biggrin.gif first, adjustment:
IPB Image

IPB Image

And then cut, tack welded:
IPB Image

And then welded:
IPB Image

My door gap is so much better than it was! wub.gif
IPB Image

Planishing:
IPB Image

And done: smile.gif
IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

The last missing part was the small bracket at the front of the wheel:
IPB Image

IPB Image

All looking good: shades.gif

Thanks for following along,

Yes, a 914 on jackstands for too long get's tiring. It's a good feeling to have a project take that step to being back on the ground.

Looking good!

Going for a respray of the whole 914 when all done?
TRS63
More or less.. l am painting the whole exterior back in original color but inside it stays like that..no full restoration here, just bringing the fun toy back to solid state smile.gif

Antoine
TRS63
A lot more happened during the last weeks

I worked on getting all the elements in primer:
IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

And I finished the stainless steel fuel lines installation biggrin.gif

Stay tuned,

Antoine
TRS63
We got some colors!!
I decided to make it a bit unconventional and paint a couple parts first to allow me to move forward with the build..
So here some fresh paint!!
IPB Image

IPB Image

And then I could build the fresh air box, the wiper system and the tank back:
IPB Image

And here:
IPB Image

And the engine is back in:
IPB Image

Now to connect everything, and try to start it again..and of course body paint/building of all parts.. it will move fast now, I want it on the road in june !

Great progress! I really hope you can get it back on the road again for June, that way you can enjoy it this summer beerchug.gif
930cabman
Great progress and are you spraying enamel single stage?

Also, cool ancient workshop, how about a pic of the exterior
Dion
You go Antoine! Knocking it out! piratenanner.gif I’d give that ground strap a good cleaning biggrin.gif
The ancient fuel injection gets finicky with bad grounds. I’m sure you know that already.
It must feel good to have some colour on it. Keep going.
Root_Werks
Wasting no time, awesome! Keep up the pace, you'll have plenty of summer driving time left.

Thanks a lot guys for the nice words!

@930cabman : Il will try to think to make a picture from the outside, even if it's not that special outside except the stone above the door saying "Built in 1560, damaged in 1704 and rebuilt in 1719"..so I own a shop that is almost 500 years old blink.gif aktion035.gif
For the paint : No, base+clear coat..got this recommandation, looks actually pretty nice for a first time garage paint..nice enough for me and no stress to use it !

@Dion : good eyes! I changed the strap after the pictures, I had forgotten to do it headbang.gif well, must be ok with the grounds, it started with no issues yesterday ! Soon the first test ride !

I love your garage. We were in Germany last month and saw several old garages similar to yours and I fell in love with them. After viewing them I understood why we refer to our construction method as "stick building"! Compared to those massive wooden columns/posts's our 2"x4"s look like tiny sticks. That orange peel will easily buff out and look like glass. Keep uptake great work. beerchug.gif

And... it's painted!!

Whoa! Antoine ! You weren’t hanging about. That’s getting it done.
Is that a base coat/ clear coat system then? Did you make a “booth”?
How did you control the “cloud” exhaust fans running?
Just curious how you did it in that very cool garage.
Happy you have colour on there! Looking great.
Cheers

Great color, I've always loved the orange on the 914 first.gif

Yes, I painted it with base coat/clear coat. Il did not really make a booth, just layed some cloths over the car to avoid too much dirt coming from the top of the old barn. And for the cloud..well, let's say that the barn isn't really waterproof.. all in all, turned out quite ok, not perfect but after polishing it will be a good "quality driver" paint-finish smile.gif

And now the finishing touches:

Put the interior back (temporary, as GT door panels and some more surprises are coming..):

Looking good! What exactly is the shade of orange? It seems a little more vivid than Signal Orange, which I always see as having more yellow in the highlights.
