It looks as though I will be there wednesday evening. The wife really wants to leave town as soon as possible. We really need a vacation!

It looks like Ed won't be there this year due to a schedule conflict but...
I am trying real hard to fit this event into my schedule. My wife is on board with it.
We haven't taken a real vacation together in years.
I looked at flights last night and can get a good price into SFO Wednesday or Thursday night, with return flight leaving late Sunday night.
I have a nephew in San Jose with a newborn baby that we would like to visit, maybe Sunday for dinner before heading home.
If we came out Wednesday I would want to visit a winery or two in Napa valley before heading east on Thursday and maybe visit McMark's shop in the morning first if that works for him. On the map it looks very do-able.
Anybody have a spare 914 available to loan us?

Expedia is having a sale for Harvey's right now...for the same price we would have received! I don't know how long this sale will last, however if you book 2 nights or more, the price comes out to be the same we would have gotten with the group rate. Simply search on Expedia for South Lake Tahoe for the dates (May 13th-16th) and you'll see the discount for Harveys.
The rates right now are $59/Thursday, $77/Friday and $97/Saturday. This averages out to $77/night if staying Thurs-Sunday... I would suggest booking sooner than later since this is a sale.
I followed the Expedia link this evening and the special deal ain't so special now!
Average per night is up to $115+. So much for a group rate.
I already bought plane tickets so it isn't a deal breaker but it does kinda suck that we will have to pay $40+ per night more than others at the same gathering.

Chris...there was no group rate. We had looked into it and they needed a solid number of rooms required and if we didnt fill 90% of those rooms, whoever signed the agreement would be on the hook for rooms. After the fiasco at WCR Mark had to go though, there was no way we were signing anything.
Tahoe has lots of options as to where to stay and several hotels that are within a block of Harveys so we figured it would beter for people to make their own reservations.
The expedia deal I found was more than a month ago and was just a heads up for everything looking to book early. Those deals come up now and again and I will try to keep people updated on any I find.

I understand Brett, and I certainly wouldn't want the same thing to happen as the above mentioned fiasco. I was just venting.
I'm looking around right now and it looks like we can get a room at the Ambassador Motor Lodge for as low as $58 night. The Ambassador appears to be only a couple blocks away, across the state line.
Besides, if Mary wants she can pay for the room at Harvey's. I'm a bit cheaper than that.

FYI- Harrvey's has been running ads on local cable in So Cal for rates comparable to the early ones. Maybe even less....

I warned a month and a half ago that room rates/availability are changing big time. If you haven't booked a room, better get on it. Tahoe is an amazing destination. The longer you wait, the higher the rate. Wait too long and hotels may be sold out.

Rand is right. I just went to the Peppermill in Reno for a concert and the hotel was sold out. Rand told me that it was sold out for 8 weeks!

Schedule details have been a bit thin so far. I know Thursday is a "bonus" with just the meet and greet that evening, but would like to know more about Friday's plan. Is Friday a "full day" so that folks should show up before Friday morning so as not to miss out on something?
Driving time from Flagstaff is 12+ hours and I can probably do it in one day, but it would be helpful to know some additional schedule info so that I can decide and figure out if Linda is going to want to come along.

I told my wife it is a vacation so anytime away from home, kids and the usual crap is good time! We don't have to be there all the time because there are alot of other things to do. Other than the BS'ing, Drinking, BBQing and the drives there is another 14 hours of me and her time! Besides she really doesn't want me around all the time? After a few hours she will tell me to go play with the other kids so it works out great!!! She can use some alone time to do what she wants.

Just got off the phone with Harvey Weidman of Weidman Wheels in Oroville CA. I thought I should let you guys know that Harvey has confirmed that he will be there and will do a Tech Session on Porsche Wheels and 914 Wheels. If you have never heard or spoken to Harvey, you should know, no one knows more about Fuch wheels and Porsche wheels.
Other tech sessions include Andy Schmidt on string alignment, Mark Debernardi on something mysterious and dark, Mike Lesniak on 901 Transmissions, and possibly, Eric Shea on brakes.
Registration and the schedule of events will be announced immenently. Register early!

I'm interested in hearing where people are staying other than Harveys, and if anyone has a recommendation either pro or con regarding other hotels in the neighborhood.
My wife and I won't spend any amount of time in the casinos. We're more interested in outdoor activities and sightseeing when not involved with the group. All the online info from expedia, etc. has narrowed it down but I'm still a bit lost as to where we will stay, and I want to have our reservations made by this weekend.

My wife Nancy and I are registered/paid!
And we're already set up at Harvey's.
We lived on the north shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe City) from 2000-04, so we know the Tahoe Basin pretty well. I'm sure Nancy would like to participate in at least one day hike, and there's a great rock-n-dirt one off Highway 89 / Luther Pass toward Markleeville. We could easily spend 2-4 hours on that hike, depending on how far you wanna go. Another sweet (granite) hike is the Eagle/Velma Lakes trail near Emerald Bay; since it is a west-shore location, it will probably have more snow than Luther Pass. Both of these locations are a ~30 minute drive from Harvey's, and either will provide sweeping views of Lake Tahoe. Let me know if you're interested.

As long as I brought this up, a little data for you guys driving cross country with your 4 cylinders. My car is wired and gauged for CHT readings. When I drive normally in traffic with the Raby kit motor the CHT is usually around 275 F. That is until you go to fifth gear. In fifth gear the temperature rises by 50 F. or so. Now with a stockish 2 liter the CHT is about 50 F. higher than the Raby kit motor. So just driving around you sit at about 300 F. Go to 5th gear at highway speed and your temperature rises to 350 F. These temperatures are at a fairly cool ambient of 70 F. and are compensated, so they are actual temperatures.
The take home message is if you are on the highway in high ambient temperatures and in fifth, be aware of your oil levels and try to spend some time in forth gear once in a while. I suspect you are ok having your temperatures rise by 50 F. but absolutely do not forget to downshift when you go up a grade.
You guys with stock exhaust will have higher CHT. Fan speed seems to have the greatest impact on CHT, but don't let your oil levels drop!
