This thing is gonna be killer when it's done. boldblue.gif

What are those pieces of metal flapping where the battery tray is suppose to be???

Geoff
Gint
C'mon Geoff, use your imagination. The guy that installed those pieces certainly did.

Not to jack your thread but this is creative welding! Kid did it in shop class. icon8.gif

Geoff

OK, so the junk in my car can't top that. But I think you get the idea. Someone riveted in a panel behind the battery, all the way around and down into the hell hole. Below the engine shelf even. Some of it is fiberglass. Then they dumped a bunch a bondo on top. Whether someone else can be more creative or not, it qualifies as a mess in it's own right.
Bleyseng
This is what I did on my car on Saturday. Repaired the drivers sail corner. What a bitch that was. Crappie cell phone pics.

I'm not Gint, but I can answer this question. Last week I picked up the body and right rear quarter panel from the stripper, and delivered them both to the body man/painter.

Not to hijack this thread but... I then picked up my shell - the green one seen here:

http://www.914world.com/members/markd/mike...es6/mikes6.html

It looks great and I can't wait to start reassembly. It's only about a year behind schedule! Hope to be driving it before too much longer. driving.gif

You got that one right! Apparently, the filler like stuff inside the tail light area was disturbed by the sandblaster and some of it fell out. This allowed rusting to start underneath. The paint that Brandon put on bubbled up twice before he discovered what the problem was. He treated everything underneath with Rust-Mort, welded and body worked in a patch, and repainted everything. Now it looks great - just like the left side. No bubbles this time. You can't tell there was ever a problem there.

I've got some digital pictures at home of this area after the final repair. I'll repost them on my own thread tomorrow.

Mike
Gint
Thanks for picking it up Mike!

Now if I could just get some pictures. I just PM'd Mark a few minutes ago asking for pics.
mikey
You're welcome! Your tub looked very nice all clean and primed. I just went through this whole thread today for the first time. Our cars had similar problems. My rust didn't get to the longitudinal though. My right rear suspension mounting had been rusted away and badly repaired. So it had to have major surgery in that area. I also had some damage to the left front nose area.

Once I figure out how to post pictures here I'll start my own restoration thread. I've taken digital pictures of the whole restoration so far.

Mike
Gint
Looking forward to seeing your thread Mike. Your tub looked really sweet. If you need help posting pics, shoot me a PM and I'll get you going.

MARKD! Need pics!

Your guess is as good as mine. I have PM'd and generally nagged Mark to death for pics and still haven't seen any. I'll have to call Brad tomorrow at the shop.
Levi
Ok then...
My inspiration comes from you guys that are restoring your cars and posting the pictures, I have no one local so I'll keep buggin you... biggrin.gif

I have to live vicariously through people like Doug. I hope to be following in his footsteps sooner or later.

In the meantime, pics of my dipped tub would be nice.
SP9146
Haven't been on in a while. Thought I'd log on and see how the acid dip came out on Gint's car but still no pics. Is it me or is 2 months a long time to post pics from something everyone wants to see? Did the car dissolve or something?

Mike,
the tub looks good except for that one area there. smile.gif

Lots more rust holes in that tub. They just aren't as large.

You talking about that section behind the passenger door? Yeah I saw that too. biggrin.gif

Looks like he's got a pretty good replacement piece to swap it with. It's gonna look good when it's done!
krk
Mike,

Glad to see the pics and it's good to see progress! (yeh, I see the holes... "facts are your friends") I'm looking forward to seeing it complete! (I'm sure you are too -- heh)

Good luck with the project, and definitely continue with the pics!

kim.
Gint
Thanks guys.

I'm going to ask Mark if he can get some pics of the rust holes around the tub. I'm curious to see if the dipping turned up any rust that I didn't already know about.
SP9146
That's the way to do it Gint! You will get evey rust hole this way and have a perfect car! What color and brand of paint? base / clear or single stage? How are you going to restore the seam sealer, did you take or have before shots of factory original?
Levi
Yes!! Thats what I'm talkin about... clap56.gif
Thanks.
beerchug.gif
william harris
My two cents worth: screw the seam sealer, it is nasty stuff and traps water to form new rust. See pictures of the seam sealer I removed that looked good on the outside and was rusting at the seam on my "Restoration Part Trois" thread. ar15.gif

I'm assuming the paint will end up being some kind of PPG product since the primer is PPG DP40 (according to PPG's web site: D834 DP40 , a chromate-free epoxy primer which provides a high degree of adhesion both to bare metal and a wide range of plastics.) But I need to get the painter (dlpenserini, aka Brandon) to have a look at this thread. In fact I need to talk to him directly. He and MarkD are doing the rust/body/paint work. The color will be the factory color for the car, tangerine. As for the seam sealer, not sure yet what will happen there.

As for before pictures, go backwards in this thread. It's loaded with 'em.

Mike,

This is 914-porn at its best. The progress is wonderful! smilie_pokal.gif The pics are excellent and I'm sure will be motivating to more than just me!

Best,

kim.
Gint
Thanks Kim. If Shar finds a job before the end of February it won't even have to sit in the garage doing nothing waiting on $$$.
ChrisReale
Is this the one that you dropped off at Brads? The one with fiberglass longs?
Eric Taylor
Drool drool DROOL. God it's amazing to think of that tube as being a totally complete rust free 914/6 considering it's beginnings as such a rust bucket with body damage. It's gona be beautiful and deffinatly worth the wait! This project has always kept my intrestet, it's great to see it nearing body completion! Congrats Gint!. By the way, what color? Are you gona go stock with the orange, or something totally different?
