Who, me?
TC, how much does the 10k tach cost to get rebuilt/converted from a early 911 8k tach? And would you possibly have a line on another $20 kilometer speedo?
carr914
Feb 21 2010, 11:11 AM
Don, what I started with was a 930 10K Tach that had a Boost gauge at the bottom, so it was rebuilt and I eliminated the boost gauge to make it look like an earlier piece.
I really lucked out on the KLM speedo. I won an eBay auction for some Mega-phones. Through eMails with the seller, he had sold his 914-6 and was selling his stash. I picked up F & R bumpers with perfect top pads for $400 for the pair, the speedo for $20.

Very nice dash setup! I am getting closer to installing the quad gauge I got from Mark long ago.
I'm curious what the red zone on the KPH speedo is for?
Don - I just had an early 911 tach converted to a 10K dial and circuitboard replaced (so it works with an MSD now without an adapter, and doesn't bounce) - it was $200 and change. The cost will vary depending on the parts and labor your core requires.

Compliance with the law ;-)
In Germany at least but I believe through the Euro zone there must be a red mark on the speedo at 50 k/h. It's basically the 'in-city' speed limit at 31 m/h

Damn I gotta say I read through this whole post for the first time. Only after reading your other post about sending some pics to the previous owner. Amazing the job you have done saving this car. Who cares what the previous owner thinks of it. I know plenty of us would not have the chops to take on that resto
.
My only problem is after reading your other post. I thought I was going to see a completed car. Now after reading through 13 pages of posts. I'm left blue balled
I can't wait to see it finished. It will be absolutely beautiful.

Excellence did a feature a while back on the Dauer 962 - a race car converted to a street car converted to a race car to fit through a loophole in Le Mans rules about 'limited production sports cars.' As a street car, it was required to have the 50 km/h red zone. On a 400 km/h speedo, it was but a teeny dot...

Do you have the GT pop up headlight kit for this car? I could use some pictures
because I want to make my own. I don't want to blow $500+ for what is just a
bunch of cables, springs, and brackets I could make myself. I need at least 2
sets of these things and I may look at making a run of them.
I got the caswell plating kit and power supply lately so I plan to yellow zinc it all.

I've joked around with the Local Guys about all the excuses the shop that is working on my car has used that it is not done and even Blew Up on them about it.
Well I found out today that Gary had a Heart Attack working on my car yesterday. He will be OK. I talked to him in the hospital today. But he will have to cut out the Krispy Kream Donuts, etc.
I was expecting the car back soon, but this is an excuse I can live with ( Hopefully Gary too).
My engine guy has also had a Heart Attack working on my motor.

Well Gary is recovering nicely and is back at work. He doesn't have his stamina yet and he has to watch the Heat and how long he is at the shop.
I stayed in touch with Gary & his son Jason every week. Unfortunately Jason didn't touch my car in the last month because, "it's Dads job"
I'm glad Gary's feeling better, so I can go back to busting his ass to get my car done.

In defense of Jason, the shop is kinda divided in 2. Gary likes Porsches and Jason is an expert on 60's VW Buses. In the last few years, the Porsche & racecar side has been down, while it seems the Bus business is pretty good. They do help each other and I would rather have Gary working on the car.

Finally work has resumed
. Gary is feeling better, but I would guess that our Uber Hot Florida Summer limits him.
I had sent him an Angry, but Courteous eMail a week and 1/2 ago. I didn't want to drive 200 Miles to blow-up on him again. He didn't need another Heart Attack & I don't need my 1st. He took it the right way and realized if it was his car, he would want it done too. I was hoping for a Shrink-Coat of
Orange on it, but at least some work has been done.
