Looking forward to the drive and seeing all of the 914 enthusiasts on the road .

I just resolved the elusive exhaust leaks from my conversion/installation to 2.0 headers system (thanks to Larmo63) and a brand shinny new Dansk banana muffler (thanks to George Washington) to quiet down the 2.2L to my liking. Bruce Stone's recommendation to anneal each of the copper gaskets prior to installation solved the leakage issue / so my ride will be the quiet one in the pack..

This week I will run up to the top of Mt. San Jacinto and back to check carb issues / similar elevations to our planned drive / and better to flesh this stuff out now rather than hanging up others on the RT66.

Which begs the question: Do the seasoned multi-elevation carb-drivers bring along carb jets or parts to deal with air mixture issues from MSL to 12,000 ft AMSL or simply put up with the mixture variations??

See ya'll in Flagstaff. beerchug.gif

I've had my 2.2 liter type IV with Webers at the top of the Sandia Mountains during the Atomic Ramble (geez, how long ago was that?). 10,500 feet. No jetting changes needed. If you're up that high, a recommendation would be to "keep the revs up". I can still hear THOMAS yelling that in my ear. laugh.gif I do however remember Joe Sharp having trouble starting his six in Moab. It started but took awhile.

Changing jets....what is that? :-)

Changing jets....what is that? :-)

I flew the DC-8 for 11 years, then I went to the B-747. I changed jets. Each had four motors and one was much bigger than the other. I changed jets. I don't know how else to explain it. av-943.gif

Well, I leave tomorrow. I hope. I found an interesting fact about the 914. I pulled the distributor and put it back without plugging in the lower contacts for the FI. Turns out it will sputter on those injector pulses at start up. That made me think I had the timing way off. Wasted about 2 hrs on that one.

The map programs say I have a 25-26 hr drive depending on whether I want flat or flat country followed by running south along the rockies eastern side. I miss mountains here, so I figure on the latter. I have summer tires. Think I need to change?

Odd thing. I spent a year trying to tune the fuel MPS. Always a flat spot. Bad coil getting worse. I bought an epoxy potted blaster coil just to avoid trouble. Electronic ignition gear is relegated to spare, I put in points and the coil that probably shipped with the car and I am getting ready to take off.

So. From what I understand, when Elliot gets over 10,000 feet he gets out of his current plane??? Well, that would produce some serious re-starting problems. Changed jets with a parachute I hope. Hmmm. Passengers might be a bit disgruntled, but I suppose there is a co-pilot.

Haven't noticed anyone re-jetting the carbs at elevation before. However, they are usually trying to dial the carbs in while the FI folks are inside eating. confused24.gif See ya Thrs. beerchug.gif

Good news for those who need it. I have contacted a local native american shaman in Flagstaff who has agreed to help expel the "subie curse". It involves 5 pounds of cow dung, chicken bones, a large pigeon feather and certain incantations that he has bestowed upon me to use if he for some reason is out of town. He said peyote will be supplied for a small fee because if also helps if you're a little smoke.gif.

The peyote buttons can be found in most parts of south Texas and the cops know it! Just be sure an Indian is in the car with you in case you get pulled over. lol-2.gif If you ever want to see multi colored lightening bolts (on a clear night) just eat 3-4 of those. I'm guessing of course. smoke.gif

Should I bring my Poker set. It might be a little chilly for parking lot antics and thought this might be a diversion if needed. We can set up in Elyut's room or if he gets too cranky we can use Larmo's room. confused24.gif

Connecting the heater tomorrow. I have 2 seat heaters and a 12 volt electric blanket. All will be going full blast.

Note to self: Remember to pack the battery charger. That poor little 55 amp alternator will struggle to keep up. Wait a minute. Is the alternator on the 2.7L /6 bigger than 55AMP? I might get away with tis after all.

Just looked at the NOAA website - winter stuff possible one night only; rest of the time 40s -50s with 50% chance of wet stuff...
Probably pretty spectacular sights on the South Rim though! I guess that's the price of gathering at 7600 ft...

It snowed last time I was there. I can use the cool cause I am still plagued by over temp on the #3 cylinder on hills or over 70 mph. Made it into central Iowa today. 300 miles but my back was ready to quit. I can see it now. You kids have fun, I'll just check into the hospital. Fat chance, this is snow bird season and they have twelve million people for every physician. Ask me how I know. Hint my dad was in excruciating pain in the er for eight hours, sitting next to the sign reminding us it is a felony to assault a hospital worker. Good to know. So, plan on stayinging healthy. Other than a bit concerned over temp things are going good.

The Las Vegas Caravan will meet up at the Motel 6 located at 195 E. Tropicana Ave. (Next to Hooters, Tropicana Casino on The Strip.)
Look for Stratplayers tow rig, (Red truck, Orange teener) in the Motel 6 parking lot.
Plan on a 9:00 am departure, Thursday morning.

Does everyone have their National Parks Pass? (You will also need it for the Grand Canyon.)
Our planned exodus from Vegas will include a loop around Lake Meade, a visit to the Marina and a Photo Opp at the Hoover Dam.

Good suggestion!

My after-market seat warmers (not built-in to the cushion) draw 45 watts on high. If my Ohm's Law calcs are right I only pull 3.75A per seat on high. Let's call it 8 amps total. I think I will be okay. They both plug into the cigarette lighter so I need to find out which fuse that is and carry a few spares (I have a stash in the console but probably the wrong ones and I don't want to over rate the fuse).

The conversion of Watts to Amps at fixed voltage is governed by the equation Amps = Watts/Volts

For example 12 watts/12 volts = 1 amp

I also have the GT engine cover with no rain tray. I have rain hats on my carbs and I cover my distributor and coil with a plastic bag. The night before the swap meet at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim this year it rained like hell. The car started right up the next morning. The last time I drove in heavy rain, the car suddenly stopped running, dead. I sprayed the coil, distributor and anything else I could think of with WD40 (water dispersant try number 40) and it started up with no problems. I will keep a small can of WD40 in the glove box and at least one large plastic bag and hope for the best. biggrin.gif
