Having a bite in Kearny NE. Started at 6:30 am from Des Moines and had a couple hours run in the cool or cold air. Running at 75 and no problem. Then engine stone dead suddenly. Took a while but guess how long the flaps set of points lasted. I had a spare distributor set to plug into a crane ignition unit. Of course as I got out of the car it began a cold rain with strong wind. Fortunately I coasted to a handy off ramp on I 80. After a cold hour it fired right up. I am 700 miles along so far, but considering the purchase of long johns for the high desert. Speaking of high desert I am trying to make the Colorado border.
Good luck everyone.

Glad you are on the move again. I had issues with points only lasting miles and it was a bad condenser. I was lazy 40 years ago just swapped points. Always change the condenser when changing points in conventional ignition setups.

Good Luck!

I sprayed the coil, distributor and anything else I could think of with WD40 (water dispersant try number 40) and it started up with no problems. I will keep a small can of WD40 in the glove box and at least one large plastic bag and hope for the best. biggrin.gif

Good call on the WD (water displacement) 40. Adding it now to the travel tool bag.

Now without fish oil. The maker didn't patent it it for fear of revealing the secrets of the Pharos in preventing rust.
There are WD40 proteins named for repeats of amino acids coded W and D in blocks of 40.

Keep a weather eye open Warren. The entire Midwest is under tornado watch. Mostly along the I-35 corridor from Kansas City - Wichita - OKC - Dallas.

I think you are West of it.

Quoth me prior to departure "condensers don't fail" Yeah, well I think it did.

Then I was at McDonald's and the car was dead when I came out. Got a strange set of directions to NAPA and then while contemplating noticed it was the adjacent lot. They sold me a battery (kill me, I panicked). Nothing. Until I hit the starter with a hammer as was the style of the day, and it started right up. Of course. Looked me straight on and wouldn't take the battery back. Never cranked more than a cylinder, cause de fFI moves wid a quickness you know? $125 down the toilet. Still it is a spooky reminder of the 2014 event, except I am in deeper.
Couldn't hold my back together until the Colorado border. I have degenerative disc disease and am good for only about 10 hrs upright at a time. I love the Platte river, but Nebraska left a bad taste. But I am 800 miles along. Says snow tomorrow. One great thing about the cold is then I run quick. Not as quick as some folks, and they know who they are, based on certain license plates, but the motor runs strong when it can shed the heat. Ran at 75 all day and really liked it. Speedo says 80 but the gps don lie. I got a blue tooth satellite sensor from aircraft spruce so I can fight with the iPad instead of the woman in the tom tom. I took a picture at dawn this morning when I started, but it was with a real digital camera not loaded to the iPad yet. Funny thing is that far west and it comes up later. Longitude maybe?
Gnight from north Platte.

I have too many sweaters at home where it is winter forever. But I may buy a sweatshirt or some thermals. The moths got to my duofold with the flap in the rear. So maybe those modern ones. Gawd I am too old for this...Southern vacation my ass. And I knew better being snowed upon in late May at the rim! Really looking forward to seeing you. Is there a liquor store in Flagstaff?

Also, is the plan still for the So CA group to meet at State Route 138 exit off of I-15 at the bottom of Cajon Pass?

At my age, the comfort of the truck I'm worthy of. Traveling with a dog in the 914 isn't much fun.

Checking in from the NW and I should be on the road, but I'm not. Been trying to get my newly rebuilt EG33 in the Westy fired, but ONE BOLT has stymied me. Long story but needing to drop the tranny down to install a breather line set me back the whole weekend. I'm back on track now but I had to cancel my Thursday reservation. Hoping to make it to Flag on Friday but that's a longshot. Saturday in Prescott still on the radar.

Party on!

The Las Vegas Caravan will meet up at the Motel 6 located at 195 E. Tropicana Ave. (Next to Hooters, Tropicana Casino on The Strip.)
Look for Stratplayers tow rig, (Red truck, Orange teener) in the Motel 6 parking lot.
Plan on a 9:00 am departure, Thursday morning.

Does everyone have their National Parks Pass? (You will also need it for the Grand Canyon.)
Our planned exodus from Vegas will include a loop around Lake Meade, a visit to the Marina and a Photo Opp at the Hoover Dam.

Do we need to purchase a National Park Pass in advance to enter the Grand Canyon?
Or do we pay at the entrance?

I highly recommend McGaugh's on the corner of Butler and San Francisco. A great selection of premium beers (and owned by friends of mine). It's also just a couple of blocks from the new Dutch Bros. coffee for when you need some caffeine.

You can pay at the door.

Grand Canyon National Park Vehicle Permit - $30.00. Admits one single, private, non-commercial vehicle and all its passengers.
Grand Canyon National Park Annual Pass - $60.00. Valid for twelve months from the date of purchase for unlimited visits.

National Park Annual Pass - $80.00. Unlimited for ALL National Parks for twelve months.
National Park Senior Pass - $10.00. One time processing fee if you are over 62.
