I agree an X top gear at 8K is about as fast or faster than you'd wanna be going in a non-aero 914 ... My current 5th is a V and that's ~135mph which is pucker time
Right back atcha' Chris, hoping that '21 is an Awesome year for all ! Fast times ahead in the (non aero) #40 for sure. A bit of a rake is good advice , thank you Steve @slivel !

AFIK yes, and judging by the wear and tear parts we replaced in the trans ...it's been well used. It has been upgraded with the CMS intermediate plate along with new bearings, a different 3rd gear ratio, and a long list of replacement parts.

We sourced these Dunlops through Roger Krause Racing in NorCal, very good in matching the period correct "Wets" used in the 70's Click to view attachment

^ Great stuff, Marty. Those wheels/tires sure look period correct.
Looking forward to seeing this car back on its (new/old) four feet!
I am surprised you ran the upgraded billet intermediate plate.
They did not have that back then did they?
I would have dulled it up a bit...Looks too new modern !
I want your wheels and tires !!!!

I've experienced 901 intermediate plate bearing failures...so this upgraded (California Motorsports) unit will just have to get a bit dusty, might match the rest of the mag case I'll keep the original near the 914 books

Sounds like this car is gonna be seen, heard, and used again. I like it.
And there's a case to be made for cool Le Mans car parts you can see daily…

I have driven both, and the side shifter is definitely better. But our six has the tail shifter, and after I went through the linkage, it shifts almost as good as a side shifter.
The six is much better than the four for the tail shifter.
I like the period correct shift linkage on it. Keep up the good work!

Marty, what do you use to keep the case clean...or is not a big deal out there in CA. Out on the east they get dark and have surface corrosion very quickly.

I have been touching-up the mag surfaces with a scotchbrite pad & a bit of wd40 on it. The original intermediate plate was hot-tanked, rinsed and naturally looks like this. I'm sure it will turn dark grey when the humidity sets in Click to view attachment

Clay, thank you for chiming in with your findings...I am looking forward to Not grinding gears & Not missing shifts. There is something to the "Look" of a tail shifter on this special teener ! The Daytona 24hr (1971) class winner 9146GT did have its tail-shifter switched out to side-shifter long ago, way before its new ownership in 2020, at the Gooding Auction.

Only driven one 2.0 with 46s…and was amazed by how well it drove. The owner grinned as one does with cracked ribs, and mentioned how that took a while.

Our engine tech's start & run bench is not set up for mid-engine headers as 90% of their engine work is 911. Easier to just use rear engine headers for the tests. 911 engine mount is just part of how he designed the bench framework as well.

Thank you Eric + Team @ PMB for refurbishing #40's front & rear brakes! They came out amazing, and the work is nothing less than exceptional.
#40 continues to come back to life with various cable replacements, pedal bushings, CVs + axles, interior, and engine bay refurbishing.
Below are some before & after pictures showcasing PMB's work.

Hi Marty, the fronts are something special, could you tell me what they came off of? They must be alloy, was that the factory finish? They really came out nice.

May 3 2021, 05:56 PM
@TRS63@Shivers Trust me I had nothing to do with these brakes except dismount them from the car; Eric and his team @PMBperformance worked their evil magic on these
The M style calipers are re-finished in a golden-zinc, and the front light-alloy Alum calipers are finished smooth and not sure of the coating ( Eric might chime in), but there is an applied lubricant buffed onto the surface.
The factory sourced the fronts off of the 908 model for #40 Marty

Yep...just rollers. The tires that came on #40 were ancient cracked and leaked air overnight, became too labor intensive to keep up. So wheels went out for restoration, new (period correct) Dunlops ordered up, and on went the Cookies on scrub slicks for daily push arounds. Cookies look weird but does the trick !
