Man-o-man! Hard to believe that the most significant 914-6 GT cars of all time continue to change hands in this celebratory year of the 914.

First off, kudos to Mike Hagen for his pursuit of this crown jewel of the 914 world and his long-time stewardship of what is arguably the most significant 914 on the planet.

So refreshing to see that Mike has passed the torch to someone offering more than deep pockets. Nicely done! Congratulations Marty & Matthew!

The Hagen history of the car is chronicled in the "Forgotten Hero" article from 911 and Porsche World, October 2000 posted at Armando's Pbase 9146 GT website. You can view the article here:

Glenn, the car is undergoing the Discovery phase for the moment ; then addressing all areas that need repair/ replacement. It's a time capsule, so due diligence strictly adhered to smile.gif
So...no showing of the 914 for several months.
I will post up pics of what we are finding here , sure to be a few trick factory parts !

Yes...Mike and I are aware that the fire system was removed at some point. The actuator on the front cowl is missing and a small round chrome-cap has been placed over the empty hole.
A modern/ approved fire system will be onboard #40 shortly , but the unit that ran in the 24Hr would be a cool "Re-uniting " with the car.
Do let me know when you meet up with your friend if he's interested in selling off the part. Also if he is still has the 8 1/2 " x 15" rear Fuchs driving.gif

Hello Marty,
Congratulations on the great deal, I would have loved to buy it back, unfortunately it was too expensive for me ...
Where does the information come from that there were 8 1/2 " x 15" rear Fuchs rims on the back?
At LM in rear was 7x15, later 9x15 Minilite and 10x15 Gotti was used.

I will think about the price for the fire system.
Thats my in the 80s, put on the sticker

Hi Wolfram,
Welcome to the 914World...it will be cool to read some of your stories about this car during your stewardship of #40 welcome.png
I can't pin down the authenticity of info about the 8.5" Fuchs rear wheels, kind of like chatter among people that we have spoken with during the quest of this 914. Did you drive #40 on streets , or just take to special events/ track use/ etc. ¿?
Cool to have you on board the Forum here...and let me know if/ when you are ready to sell off the fire-bottle (use my PM) .
Marty

This could be the era in which the wider wheels (8.5") were on the car.
Late '80s, I built the 1/2 cage at the shop for the car to be entered into a PCA Parade.

Interesting it ran the rear sway bar, did all the factory GT cars run the rear bar? Seems that many 914 race cars don't always use them.

People often run without a swaybar for AX, but on the big track, it really helps keeping the rear planted in the corners corners.

At the end of June 1970 Claude Ballot-Léna ran the car in La Ronde Cévenole in France. He did not finish due to an accident (probably what prompted the color change).

I suspect the colour change was to bring the car in line with Sonauto's new livery of yellow with green, but I may be wrong. Their RS rally car was in the same colours (it looks blue in this photo, but is green in real life).

Whats the story on the red tape around the windshield at Le Mans? Was it used as a graphic? leaking seal? hold the glass in at high speed? All of the above?

If I read the history correctly, it was used by the pit crews to identify the car coming into the pits. That's the same reason they painted the bumpers on some GTs half body color and half black.

Clay,
The story that I got from the prior ownership is that; in the event of windshield breakage/ windshield blowout on the high speed section of the track...pit stop replacement was hastened by the use of high-speed German duct tape ! There were a few extra red rolls that came along with our car purchase, cool spares.
And yes Betty can get up close and personal with #40 anytime we bring it out to events!

So they duct taped in the windshield instead of using butyl? Duct Tape can do ANYTHING!
pete000
Was there any windshield retaining tabs ever installed like most of the race cars ran?

I wonder if they forgot to install them and the tape got them through tech inspection?

Let me add my congratulations to the ownership transition.
Now that is an interesting caliper. Very similar pin to that on the "908" caliper that I had, and Eric @PMB duplicated many years ago. This U-pin is backwards to the one I had and has holes for the retaining pins. I would like to see the other side of the caliper.
