Preview of some stuff in the upcoming episode:
LOTS of work on the fixture table to get this latest exhaust worked out - and it's coming along nicely.

Like this. Still have the "header-to-rear-of-X" tubes to do.
Krieger
That looks clean!

My "plus/minus less than yesterday" attitude is paying off. V-band square to the muffler in both directions.

Granted, the sand, fit, measure, sand fit measure process to get the muffler end trimmed to achieve this result probably took me 20 minutes.

And note the muffler ends are larger than the 2.5" tube so I don't benefit from the small locating recess the V-band has. It's butted to the muffler tube.

The headers look better upside down than right side up.

Got to see the build up close today during my visit - the vision is incredible, and I can't wait to see it progress further. cheer.gif

The attention to detail is off the charts, and is the kind of thing that highlights the incredible craftsmanship of the builder.

Thank you for being such a gracious host and keep the awe-inspiring work coming!

Cairo94507
@Tygaboy - Chris, those headers look beautiful. You and Martin are killing it. beerchug.gif

@bkrantz - You hurt my feelings. Clearly, you've not been watching the videos. poke.gif happy11.gif
Yes, entire exhaust is 304 stainless. The header flanges are the original Ferrari cast stainless parts, sliced off the factory exhaust manifolds.

Headers are art!

Some details of what it's taking to make this exhaust. The fixture table earns its keep in this episode!

Outstanding!

We need a DNA sample from Martin!

Cloning should be investigated...

beerchug.gif

Are you planning a heat shield for the starter and tranny linkage?

I think you're going to need them.

I'd mount the starter shield to the starter and the tranny linkage shield to the exhaust pipe.

I believe the aluminum linkage bars will conduct heat bigtime into the cables themselves.
Might not be a problem but I'd test for temperature.
I'd expect the exhaust tubes to exceed 800 degrees at times.

Love the fixture table!

One thing I did notice...

You have an upright belt sander. This tool is my nemesis!

Yours is "beltless"! first.gif

Only way these puppies are safe IMO!

I've been whipped RAW and BLEEDING too many times by those...

We need a Kitty update!

Simply amazing how this is coming together. wub.gif
Thank you for this great entertainment! cheer.gif smilie_pokal.gif

The Chris & Martin show! Simply the best. The crossover pipe build and jig table segment is a pleasure to see come together. Agree Martin should be cloned! lol-2.gif
Glad you’re healing well Chris!
Hope the kitties are well.

Sorry, my bad. I guess I am old school and prefer old fashioned words and photos (and I usually browse 914World while watching TV with my wife). I promise to do better.

Mocking up the header-to-X connection to verify clearance under the tube that runs to the muffler. I'm not wild about the look but I'm not sure I have much of a choice. I may play with a bit tighter radius at the header to see if like that any better.
The issue is that the quicker it turns at the front, the wider it has to be at the rear to get under the muffler tube as it drops.

Get yourself a gas lense for that stainless exhaust work! I use a 12 or a 14 cup on stainless, It keeps your welds from getting hot, reduces warping and makes it all look better. Plus ill do anything to avoid the look of burned stainless
tygaboy
The X-pipe's connected to the mufflers. Unfortunately, this isn't the way it'll look when everything's in there. The tubes from the headers to the rear of the X-pipe will block part of this view. But you'll know it's there!

The 914 Ferrari now has a crossover exhaust. It turned out great and I couldn't resist a few arsty fartsy shots.

Chris,

I know you are into the front end pretty deep, but you like doing things a couple of times laugh.gif so, I'll throw this idea out there.

Based on my Indy, IMSA, F1 and vintage racing fabricator experience I would tilt the radiator another 20-30 degrees forward and add diffuser surfaces to the top and bottom of the actual inlet area of the radiator that run all the way to the front sheet metal opening(s). This would improve and smooth the airflow to the radiator dramatically.

For air exit, I don't like the often-used holes in the wheel wells concept (though they are indiscrete). The aero is way too messy. So, I would also suggest tilting the trailing edge of the hood up 2 or 3 inches so that most of the air exits into the low-pressure area at the base of the windshield. Plus, hey, when your idling, hot air rises, right? Some of that hot air will also exit the sides. And some may sneak back in through the sides even at speed, but not much.

This also provides a unique (though pretty subtle) look to the front end.

Just my .02 worth.

Cheers, Paul VDL

I thought that the base of the windshield was a high-pressure area? That's why the ventilation is there, and why "cowl induction" was a thing, right?

My experience is that lifting the rear of the hood creates a low pressure area which pulls air out from underhood confused24.gif

Furthermore, A major difference is that the Porsche trunk is an enclosed box as apposed to a typical front engine car where the engine bay is open at the bottom for air extraction.

In any case, my experience racing Alfa GTA's back in the day is that they ran cooler with the hood kicked up 3 or 4 inches. Back then, we didn't run use radiator fans in order to gain free HP. The way I initially discovered this solution is that I forgot to latch my hood and noticed at speed that it remained open and fluctuated between 3 and 5 inches depending on the speed. I went to Pep Boys and got some hood pins. I liked the solution because I didn't have to cut up my aluminum hood.

Just an amazing level of detail and fitment. I am really looking forward to you getting that engine fired. Great work Chris and Martin. beerchug.gif
tygaboy
Time to focus on firing the engine. So... the boring, technical stuff is about to start: Electronics and wiring!
I actually really enjoy this stuff. So I just ordered the Haltech ECU (Nexus R5) and power management unit, flying lead harnesses, new throttle bodies, DBW pedal, etc, etc.

I also have to service the engine. This means timing belts and a whole range of seals and gaskets. Should be... interesting! Sure. Let's go with that.

I watched you do yours, I have faith. That was some of the nicest electrical work I have seen.

While waiting for the electronics to arrive, I may as well get started on the updated transaxle mount. Plus, we check in on the kitties!

The saga continues with me wasting time building stuff I end up not using.
Who thinks this thing will make its debut at Monterey Car Week 2025? Yes, that's the target. You're free to stop in At The Red Barn and help me or simply send a non-tax deductable donation! laugh.gif

I have to say that I continue to be impressed with the engineering. Yeah, quite a few do-overs, but that is a big part of the evolution of a system. Elegance is an objective since it tends to simplify things and make it stronger.

How about useless suggestions and snide comments on 914World?

I continue to be impressed with Chris' ability to build this stuff; he is an excellent teacher. My brother and I definitely need to take a ride to The Red Barn real soon just so I can lay under that car and check all of this stuff out in person to appreciate the top-shelf quality of the work. beerchug.gif

Let the games begin!
This is my first exposure to Haltech and I have to say, it's REAALLLLY nice. drooley.gif Well packaged and lovely in every way. And little things like they include another main faceplate sticker so no matter the mounting orientation, the info on the units is correctly oriented.
If you need me, I'll be At The Red Barn, working to get this bad boy fired!
Wish me luck! Better yet, come over and help! happy11.gif
