@Superhawk996 - To be clear, that's an example of what I'm attempting but that's NOT my work! I aspire to that level of result but we'll have to wait to see how close I can get!

Appreciate the honesty! Based on the photo of your twisting work and what I’ve seen of your wiring on the V8, I assumed that was your work. I have no doubt you’ll pull it off!

Loving the videos on the YouTube! Have to say I’m always learning something. The Tig worked out in the end. Look forward to more Chris.
@davep@bkrantz A concentric twist harness is built to the same dimension since it still has to connect to everything, but uses 15-20% more wire length. The twist and service loops takes some length and, depending on the branching approach, some extra length is used there, too. But the wire that's typically used (Tefzel M22759/32) is smaller diameter and lighter, due to the type of insulation is uses.
If you used Tefzel that harness is likely more expensive than my car was when I bought it!
I see signs that someone took the High Performance Academy Motorsports wiring course?

I'm nothing if not ineffecient! It took me a full day to get the frunk hard lines fitted. Final welding of a few joints and this coolant system will be all set. I'm happy with how it's turning out, especially now that I'm doing everything on my own, including the aluminum welding. Yes, I miss hanging out with Martin but I need to develop! Still a ways to go on that skill but the results are functional if not quite beautiful (yet!)

Looking good with the aluminum welding training wheels off! Curious how you’re going to insulate the tubing? Making good progress, even if it’s painfully slow at times.

Radiator hard lines all done. Amazing what a little Scotch-Brite can do to an aluminum tube. I'm happy with how these turned out.

And here's the detail of getting to those hard lines pictured above.
I need an oil catch can. I love symmetry. Problem solved!
Yep, I picked up another Ferrari 360 coolant fill tank, made a mirror image bracket set and: done! Well, almost done. I still need to add the appropriate fittings and lines but, come on! This looks so cool, it's all factory parts so I'm claiming I've earned solid style points on this one.

Something reminded me of this today and I realized it would be perfect for this project.
Definitely coming along. I really like the 3D printer thoughts. The Mickey Mouse ears on my 3.6 are 3D printed out of some special material (I don't recall what it was) and they are beautiful and strong. Keep up the great work Chris.

Thank you for the Saturday morning entertainment!
Always pleasant to see the enginnering and craftmanship!
Now, I have to ask. What's the deal with the "SMALL" engine valve on top of your tool box in the background at the end of the video?

@Montreal914 - I was wondering if anyone would notice that! It came out of a 2-stroke diesel submarine engine. I use it as a shop towel roll holder...

The drive train is out for the belt service, new clutch, etc. so it's time to wrap up the engine bay chassis updates. Here's the newly stamped console reinforcement tacked in. I updated the stamping die so the indent would more closely match the one on the shock tower. Not that you'll even be able to see them at the same time. Why do I insist on making everything a bigger production than it needs to be? Oh, right: Style Points!
And yep, the sockets fit just fine. I'm going to 3D print a cover for that area to prevent crap from getting in there.

Both sides fit and tacked in place. Now for final welding and adding the plating that ties these back to the shock tower.

You always find a way to add style points, while also making sure it fits, functions, and can be maintained. Not easy to hit all those marks so understandably it takes time.
Can’t wait to hear this thing fire up!

I assume Send-Cut-Send did the cutting. The die work was done at your shop? What sheet metal thickness and what size press? Very nice!!!!! BTW, I have been using SCS at work, great service! Thank you for sharing!

@Montreal914 - I really don't need "instant" parts and SendCutSend is so good/fast/reasonably priced that I sold my plasma table! Watch the next episode and you'll learn that I also moved the bender/press to another shop but I still have access so yes, I did the pressing. It's a standard size H-press with a powered ram. Watch Episode 15 below and you'll see it in action stamping the initial panel with all the parts I cut on my plasma table.
The panel in the car is .048" and the die set is .188" thick with a .200" gap between the male/female components.
Did you make another, opposite, set of dies for the other side, or did you drill out the spot welds and re-weld the small male parts on the other side of the large male part?

@BillC - I drill the spot welds and flip things around to make the mirror image part.

The latest status updates included a new crew of kitties! Enjoy...
And here's a preview of what's coming in next week's episode. The upper section of the reinforcement is final welded, metal finished and ready for primer.

My engine compartment is looking less and less like a 914's every day. And don't miss the kitty content at the end!
Did my first automotive engineering internship at Chrysler Mt. Elliot Tool and Die. They built the stamping dies and ran tryout presses for all kinds of body panels. The largest mill was an Ingersoll 5 axis CNC gantry mill with a bed that was about 12’ long. It’s for sale. It would look great in the Red Barn.
Impressive stuff you’re doing there in the Red Barn with pretty basic tools.
Don’t sell yourself short, those formations aren’t just “style points”. Those formations drastically increase the strength and rigidity vs a flat piece of sheet metal.

@Superhawk996 Yep, I get the strength improvement of adding section to a panel and stronger is always better. Well, almost always, I suppose. In the LS car, I just did flat panels but used 16 ga. In the end, for my use cases, I'm sure everything is over-built. And yes, I want that giant press! Just think of all the time and money I could waste with my do-overs on THAT thing!

That picture is of the mill that would machine the dies.
The presses are way bigger.

Tool Whore update: With the plasma table gone, it was time to implement my plan for upping my fabrication game. I started by adding a Bambu Labs 3D printer to the mix. It arrived yesterday and took maybe 1.5 hours to get set up. As soon as it let me know it was ready, I sent the first job to it. All I can say is: If you don't have one, you need one! Virtually every review talks about how Bambu Labs' products just plain work and really are "ready to go" right out of the box. I can report that it's true! I sent my first job to it and it did a flawless job of printing it.
Next to arrive is a Creality Raptor Pro 3d scanner. Between these two new tools, some super cool things will be showing up soon!
