I think the "Name" on the engine is the "litigation" point here.
Many different car companies have used Ferrari engines (all with the permission of Ferrari).
The latest use I am aware of is in the Maserati.
They have slightly less power than their Ferrari relatives.
And NO NAMES on the engine...
I'm still a proponent of "Red Barn" where the "Ferrari" monikers are.
And I'd stop using the Ferrari name all together...
All of the kit builders who made replicas FOR SALE got sued by Ferrari. Miami Vice started this crap.
I want a 57 Teste Rossa. I will never be able to afford a real one. If I ever build one, I will build ONLY 1 and it will never be "for sale".
I will NOT call it anything close to the correct name. As it will be 20% bigger than a real one and will have a slightly different shape, I might get away with it...
Many real Ferraris of that vintage ended up with other manufactures engines in them as the Ferrari parts were un-obtainium. Ferrari didn't sue those owners...

Some fab stuff, a bit about the Haltech software and getting started on wiring. Then an update to the jack contraption that some of you have asked about.
Love the wiring organizational aspects of this build.

I get it now. Herding the kitties was just a prelude to organizing the engine harness. Yowsa!

Halltech Elite 2500 was threatening to look at when I first opened all of the boxes. Their detailed illustrations, instructions, every cable + connector marked, and some assistance from our engine builder LB Bros. Porting made it a lot easier ! This ecu layout in picture is just for engine management; basic (custom made) main chassis wiring harness not shown, it's already been pulled through the bulkhead. I was also lucky enough to meet up with Ben Horton a Halltech technician from Oz, that just happened to be in SoCal for a few weeks. He brought his magic briefcase, laptop and ecu tools... which we made several corrections to my set up. Amazing customer service !
RE- Analog gauges, or custom LCD gauges if you choose.
Arduino with a Canbus hat. You can break apart the canbus data, then output to analog gauges with the signal they need to read correctly.
Or if you want custom digital gauges, add a raspberry pi and compatible LCD display. Or you can use this for a data display.

No video last week so I know you're jonesing for a fix! Well, don't miss this one. Not a ton of progress but you will get a teaser about the crazy-cool project car that just showed up!
Not going to lie, I missed the weekly update last weekend. Glad you are back and I absolutely love those bulkhead wiring connectors. Just the best and how I wish we had done my 3.6 wiring into the passenger compartment. If my engine ever comes back out (hope not) that will be a wiring upgrade for sure.

If you don't like wiring-related stuff, skip this one.
Mind blowing... Chris is not someone I would characterize as an "amateur". Amazing skills.

I figured some of you still like pics and words vs the video stuff and since I'm nothing if not considerate...
Let the connector connections begin! As I was getting started, I remembered that when I did the harness in my LS car, I struggled with change of direction when the harness went up and had to go the 90 degrees into the bulkhead connector. The wires that were pinned into the upper positions of the connector need to be a bit longer than those in the lower positions. Mistakes in these lengths forces some wire length back into the main trunk and it just looks messy. I'm not doing service loops anywhere so I need to be as accurate as possible. So I did some measuring and mocked up an in-space replica of the relationship between the ECU and the connector so I can "build to fit" and I should be good to go.
I started with the four, 25 amp, 12 ga wires that'll feed: - coils - injectors - electric water pump - starter

If you're going to have two 90 degree bends the in harness, one from the floor-to-vertical and one from vertical-to-the-bulkhead, won't the two bends cancel out any length changes? You'd just have to make sure to keep the wires straight and untwisted while laying them out.

@BillC - If only it were that easy. Nearly every one of the 60+ wires starts in a different location relative to the bulkhead connectors and doesn't necessarily end up in the same relative location because (and this is just one reason) some wires that originate in the same ECU connector (there are 5 at the ECU) end up in different bulkhead connectors (there are 3 of those). I could go on but let's just say, I know my approach works, even if it's more time consuming.

Chris, that's why farmed out my wiring to a guy I met online to do mine and now we've got the EG33 bond. He wires and programs amusement rides around the world...you two would have fun together...

Ignition, injection and one of the wide band O2 sensors pinned! It's coming along nicely. Every measurement, wire cut, strip, crimp and insert is at once tedious and satisfying. I find I get into a mental zone where I think it's been 20 minutes but I look up and a couple hours have gone by. It's easy to understand how motorsport-level harnesses cost ten$ of thou$and$. Parts are pricey, labor is intensive.

@tygaboy Chris...Halltech guru Richard Nelson is my go to guy ! Will be speaking with him about interfacing my FIA approved engine kill system into the engine PDM module. There's an EFI College in Havasu that is very much into Haltech Systems. I thought about bringing the 8gtt there after wiring her up/ having them set the car up on their dyno...while taking the 1 week course Marty

No video this week as the wiring work doesn't really lend itself to being watched. So it's pics of this part of the build. I'll do a video "wrap up" once the work is something a bit less tedious and repetative. Anyway, here's the "VCU" (Vehicle Control Unit = ECU + PDM) and main harness: - the connectors section takes care of the engine and rear body electrics: lights, etc. - there's a CAN section with three connections that'll live in the cabin (there will be a CAN connection in the engine compartment, just in case) - the remainder of the harness supports all the switches and power for interior stuff - ignition, lights, wipers, signals, gauges, seat heat, power windows, and... wait for it... Cruise Control!
Yep, this ECU supports real deal cruise. I'm also future-proofing the harness by building in circuits for things I may add going forward, including a Sport Exhaust mode. I can have the ECU control it as well as have an override button. The Haltech stuff is crazy capable.

Interior side bulk head connectors completed. This takes care of the ECU connections to everything at the rear: all drive train functions, including a Hall-effect vehicle speed sendor and an engine compartment CAN connection, as well as all rear lighting. I'll sheath it once everthing is tested and working. On to the engine harness.

Wiring, continued. At least I get to drill some holes and mount the connectors. There have been a few distractions around The Red Barn that kept me from the build: this Cayman GTS 4.0 followed me home and my wife said we could keep it! OK, OK so we ordered it a while back and picked it up on 12/27. And I can now safely state that all the review videos on these things are true. It is wonderful - and I can't rev it over 4k rpm yet!
@Tygaboy - Congratulations Chris!!!! That is a perfect car. I wish I had one of those. Michael

@Cairo94507 Michael - I call it the "any idiot with a checkbook" car. I did order what I think is the perfect spec: Vanadium Gray Metallic, manual, full leather with a few extra bits covered, those wheels (which look color-matched but aren't!) and a few other goodies. Most importantly, we now have a comfy road-trip car so I need to get on calendar to come visit you and Bob!

His "comfy road trip car" is a Cayman GTS...
The HP/torque of that Cayman is similar to the HP/torque of the Ferrari.
The 914 should weigh 500 or so lbs. less.
The Cayman has a bunch of modern improvements.
It should be a GOOD race...

@Tygaboy = You are always welcome; just let us know. You can check out the new garage, it is coming along nicely. The Cayman GTS 4.0 is the car I would buy if I bought a new Porsche
