Rob,

What size and make tires on the rear? They fit the rims perfect.

I forget the size but they are Hoosier A6's... Nice thing is I avoid shipping charges because Tire Rack is just 20 miles out of town to my East on I80...

I may be able to space the front wheels out a bit. Maybe not. They do have to turn and not contact the fender flare... blink.gif

Rears are 225-60-16, IIRC. I might have the aspect ratio wrong.

The front could probably use a 1/2" spacer. I have two 5mm spacers at the shop we can play with on Sat. If you want.

Pretty sure they are 50 or 55 aspect ratio. I definitely want to move the track out a bit if we can. Not so much that I contact inner fenders or outer fenders...

Anyone - and I mean ANYONE have any doubts who should install their fender flares on the West side of the country? biggrin.gif

If you go back a few pages you find the video of my car after the new powerplant. Prior to this motor, the car was a frisky 'momentum' car. I barely ever used the brakes except to set the suspension for a corner and I just kept my foot in it all the time. On good R rated rubber I was barely able to control the car and I will have to relearn everything about driving it. The GT flares and big tires will help a lot. In fact, it may go back to being a 'momentum' car...
I can't wait to take it to Thunderhill for a track-day!

That's what I thought too... Until I put spacers on and drove it. It looked great! But... It changes the scrub radius quite a bit. The car did not handle as well and was much harder to steer. Make sure you drive it hard after you try the spacers. You will feel a dirrerence.

You are bubbling all over yourself Rob, and for good reason - she's turning into one amazing car. I think you should drive it to WCR. Freakin' trailer queen. tongue.gif j/k Congrats!

Wow! My fronts are 16X7 as they came from Fuch Wheels. My rears are custom built 16X8.5 wheels made with 4 16X6 Fuch wheels. Harvey says he can chop off the backs of the front wheels and widen them as well without even disturbing the finish on the front of the wheels.

You don't have to remove your pics Rick. I am proud as heck to have the Alien in the same thread as my car... You class up the joint.

But the real question is; What time will we be seeing you next week and is Sandy coming with? biggrin.gif
J P Stein
If you're planning to AX that thing do not put spacers on the fronts.
Your 7 inch wheels have increased the positive scrub radius by 3/4".
A 1" spacer would put it up to 1-3/4". You won't like that on tight corners.
There are limitations to the 914 suspensions.....that's one of them.

Increasing the backspacing by more than 1/2" on your front wheels is another.

Interesting day with the "Fat Girl" at the PCA - SVR autocross. Mark and I were both pretty close to FTD on street tires, I may have gotten it in raw time but I think I caught a cone with my left rear in the slalom portion of the course. We both should have gotten 8 runs for a total of 16 on the day. Between the two of us, we got 5. Mark got 3 and I got 2... The fuel pump took a crap... It would get hot and just quit...

Yuk... Lot's of driving for 1:24+ seconds of driving sad.gif
McMark
Yeah, disappointing, but the car otherwise ran great and handled AWESOME! smiley_notworthy.gif

New pump on the way. thumb3d.gif
Mike Bellis
I had the same problem on a Worblo (sp) style pump. Turns out the pump expands and the mounting clamps do not. CLamps would jam the pump until it cooled. I moved the clamps the the edges of the pump. problem went away

Oh, BTW... These FTD on Street Tire runs were done with the EFI in your basic 'limp mode'... Mark discovered before his runs that the tuning had scrambled, maybe because of an electrical problem as we also had a blown fuse. We ran the day on closed loop O2 sensor only which is basically an economy mode... Still ran the pants off of it! Great engine!!! evilgrin.gif

Well the Sunday results are in. I was second overall, FTD on Street Tires which is a major accomplishment considering in third place just 3 tenths of a second behind my time was a 911 Turbo. Mark was just a fraction of a second back as well but somehow let a few cars squeeze into the gap between my own time and his.
I am astounded by the car's performance. Remember, we got only 5 runs between the two of us. Mark got three, I got two... The usual winner at SVR events prevailed once again. Our own Steve Neislony in the 21X car. As the eventmaster put it, it was probably the hottest day we've ever had at Mather. Steve uses slicks and when he can get them hot, he puts a lot of time between us. Sunday was no different. Almost 4 seconds up on me... Granted, had we had 8 runs like everyone else we would have whittled that down a bit but it is hard to beat slicks and even harder on a hot day.

How do you like the 8.5's?
ConeDodger
QUOTE(Eric_Shea @ Apr 25 2012, 05:27 AM) *

How do you like the 8.5's?

E,
They were a little wide for George's factory flare reproduction. The flares have a bit more of a inside lip than the factory ones. I have often heard it said that the factory flares were of a lighter gauge metal but never that the inner lip was half that of the repops. Fortunately, Mark had a car with factory flares on the project floor at the OC. So when he put the wheels on the car and discovered the 'rub' he checked the other flares on that car and modified the reproduction flares on mine.
I think Mark said there was room for 3/4" inside offset but Harvey may not be able to do that with this method.
The purely esthetic answer to your question is that I love them! wub.gif
Eric_Shea
Really just wondered how they looked against the inside. 3/4" total or another 3/4" left to go? I would think another 3/4 would max it out.
McMark
There is a little room on the inside. Definitely more breathing room than the outside. But you would be hard pressed to max it out unless you were building completely custom wheels and could specifically choose your offset. I did a bunch of measuring and math today based on Robs wheels and decided that if you built a 9" wheel with a 11mm offset and ran a 245 tire it should fit. But everything would have to be just-so and the sidewalls on the tire you buy would be a big concern.

9"x15 with 275/45 is what some of the factory GTs used to run back in the day.
However, it is next to impossible to find tires in that size anymore.

As for the offset, instead of trying to find the perfect offset, one can simply use long wheel studs and spacers to get the wheels just right.

Not really. The 911 8's (x15") are very close to the lip generally. Adding a spacer would simply put the tire into the fender. The 9's are even worse as the extra inch comes on the outside. If you look at the factory cars with 9's they had the fenders pulled. Knowing this going into it, you can mount the flares out a bit.

With the 8's there seems to be about an inch plus on the inside. Spacers won't do much good in helping maximizing that useable space. I tried a custom 9 that was an 8 with an inch added on the backside. My tires rubbed. That's why the 8.5's came to be which is why I was wondering how they fit.

Stock flares can be tough.
