Click to view attachment1973 914, 50/50 car. Originally a 1.7L/4. When I bought it in 1985, it had a 2.0L/4 with webers.
Two years later, I learned that
CARBURATORS ARE NOT SMOG LEGAL on a 4 cylinder 914!!! (PPI, kids, PPI !!)
DAPO had swapped in a 2.0L T-IV Bus(?) engine with Weber carbs
. Clueless DACO bought it
Well ... in my defense, it was probably the prettiest Lemon* in all of Northern California with it's fresh paint & re-upholstered interior.
*hiden crash damage, missing parts, rusty hell-hole, sick transmission...(PPI, kids, PPI !!)
Shortly after buying this 4 cyl. Porsche, my only 914, I learned there was such an Animal as the 914/6
.

Over the Winter of 1987/88, I got B.A.R. referee approval and converted it into a /6 with a SMOG LEGAL '73.5 911T 2.4L-CIS engine.
The fuel injected /6 passes smog inspections easily, has 50 more HP, gets better gas mileage, and has lasted 3 times longer than the carburated /4 could have ever hoped to.
A few years after the engine swap I bought & installed it's '89 Carrera front suspension/brakes, 911SC rear brakes and 6x15 Fuchs wheels. I also back-dated the front bumper, found a straight re-chromed rear bumper, replaced the plastic aftermarket mirrors with 911 Flag mirrors, and replaced the Flex-Dam with a LE spoiler.
If not for that sweet 911 engine, I would have sold this Porsche 20 years ago. Most likely it would have found the crusher by now. Smog related issues are a head-ache!
I drive it a lot! Its my favorite driver. I have driven it 220K miles since buying it.
I estimate there is 340K miles on the chassis now (original speedo removed before car found me).
The /6 engine has 290K miles on it now and still screaming along. 200K of those miles in this 914.
Thats my most recent wood-shop project in the background
. Ya think ye 'ol shop teacher will give me an 'A' now?
I'm glad the cabin is finally finished (10 yrs to plan, design, fight for permits & build). Now I can turn my attention back to my 914 and get restoration #2 started
(repaint, leather interior ... 3.2L DME(?)).
