And then--slowly--seated the inner lip. Did I say these are thick?
bkrantz
Right side done.
bkrantz
And then the left. I trimmed off the excess (first rough cut) after this photo.
bkrantz
Test fit of the roof. The right side looks pretty good.
bkrantz
The left side not so good. Ugh. mad.gif
bkrantz
I figured the roof needs hardware to fit correctly, starting with the front latches.
bkrantz
And new rubber latch blocks for the rear.
bkrantz
Roof with hardware.
bkrantz
It latches on pretty easily, snug in front but with a bit of vertical freeplay in the rear. Of course, I have not yet mounted the rear weather-strip.
bkrantz
Rear alignment needs work. The right side edge sits just inboard of the targa hoop corner.
bkrantz
While the left side edge sits outboard.
bkrantz
Just to get depressed, I rolled up the left window to see how bad things look. Ugh again. Did I mention that I don't like weatherstrips and seals?
bkrantz
A little diversion: checking the fit of the targa top in the trunk.
bkrantz
And then checking the clearance of my new EFI stuff under the forward edge of the top. Looks OK (and room for a cover over the EFI).
bkrantz
Back to working on rubber piece alignment. I pulled off the front seals and worked on fitting the A-pillar trim.
bkrantz
And I got the rubber seal remounted a bit higher.
bkrantz
Then I remembered something (duh). When I mounted the side seal trim strips, I forgot to put butyl tape between the trim and the top. So I got out my roll of 1/2 x 1/8 butyl tape.
bkrantz
Trim mounted with butyl. And then I went through the fun of installing the side seals (again).
bkrantz
Yay! Left side alignment now looks good.
bkrantz
And the right side is good, too.
bkrantz
Left window also looks good.
bkrantz
But the right window needs some work, since it closes a bit uneven along the top.

To me, getting the windows and the targa top seals to fit was the biggest PITA job on the entire car.
Took many, many hours.

Looks great Bob. That job has to suck....

Maybe I should never take it outside where it might get wet, or dirty and need washing. Then I will not need seals, right? idea.gif

Yeah. See the thread I started about least favorite 914 jobs.

I needed a break from playing window adjuster, so I tackled the targa top rear seal. Here is the replacement I got from 914 Rubber. I know it can be installed as-is, but I want to duplicate the original.
bkrantz
First, I test fitted the metal strips, including the side pieces that were molded into the original rubber seal.
bkrantz
Starting to modify the rubber. I removed the flat flaps from the side sections, and trimmed about 3 mm from the flap along the transverse section.
bkrantz
The side sections are a bit too long, so I trimmed them to fit.
bkrantz
That's better.
bkrantz
I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to first glue the entire rubber piece to the top, and then some glue on the side metal sections.
bkrantz
The side metal sections went into slits made in the rubber "cylinder", and then I screwed everything down with new SS hardware.
bkrantz
Then to mimic the original molded-on rubber, I glued the slit rubber to the top (bottom) of the side metal pieces.
bkrantz
Some ever popular blue tape to hold things in place.
bkrantz
Tomorrow, I will find out if this worked.
bkrantz
Next step: replacing the original headliner, which the PO painted, what for it, black.
bkrantz
The small tag on the glue side makes me think this was a factory piece, and probably original to the top.
bkrantz
I traced the original onto replacement bulk perlon, dark charcoal.
bkrantz
Time once again for Weldwood adhesive spray. I spent almost an hour masking off the top, and then sprayed both the top (light coat) and perlon (heavy coat).
bkrantz
New perlon headliner in place.
bkrantz
Last piece: the front pad strip.

First, a good cleaning.
bkrantz
Then, a treatment with Car Guys Plastic Restorer, and sitting for 20 minutes.
bkrantz
Finally, a treatment with Nextzett Cockpit Cleaner to take off the shine.
bkrantz
Pad strip installed with original screws.
bkrantz
Completed top on the car, and checking the fit of the rear weatherstripping. Looks good.
bkrantz
A few more items checked off the list!

Very Nice.....

Beautiful work.

Like the fit of the roof and windows.

Need to work on mine.

bkrantz
Thanks, guys. I am still messing with the right window. I got it a little better, but still not 100%.
