Tie down installed. This cool updated design has a magnet to keep the ring from dangling when not in use.
bkrantz
Both sides took about 10 minutes.

Loops tucked up, and ready to roll.

Nice tie downs!

Your car is looking amazing. first.gif

I am going to use editorial privilege here, and add in my Aluma trailer. I got this specifically to tow my 914 to events and other distant locations. My wonderful, wonderful wife wants to join in, but has declared she will not spend multiple hours in the right seat, just to get somewhere.
bkrantz
To make loading easier (including on my marriage) I added a 3500 lb winch. I installed this using a 5/8 inch thick aluminum plate. The winch bolts to the plate, and the plate is held to the main trailer member with some big square-end U-bolts.
bkrantz
My remaining task is the power system. I already have the relay and connections in a waterproof box. Now to mount this on the trailer.
bkrantz
For now, I am using 3M industrial strength adhesive tape, with double tape layers to account for the nubs on the bottom of the box.
bkrantz
Box installed, and power cables attached to the winch.
bkrantz
Here's my setup version 1.0, with a stand-alone battery. The battery cables are very heavy gauge, with a big quick-connect.
bkrantz
It works!
bkrantz
Closed up for travel.
bkrantz
Progress!

While sorting through garage boxes, I found my collection of personal car "souvenirs". This has some old shift knobs, wheel caps, and some bent valves. It also has the auxiliary gauges and panels I made for my 914 race car in the 1990s.
bkrantz
And the mounting ears that broke off the transaxle of the racecar when I collided with a Miata during an SCCA IT enduro race. That was the end of my car.

Great job and looks great too! beerchug.gif

I made a gravel screen from a single piece of .090 aluminum sheet. This was a little tough to bend, and I lent my son all my metal working tools, so the result is a little lumpy. (He recently began his own car project on an old mid-engine, two seater--but not a 914, a 1986 MR2.)
bkrantz
With all the folds, I expect it to be fairly rigid. The last step was tying the folded top panel joints together.
bkrantz
I reinstalled the winch, and should be ready to try loading my 914. Only 2 weeks until we tow to the R66C.

That is exactly what open trailers need. Your car should be nice and safe as it enjoys the ride. beerchug.gif

I hope so. beer.gif

I finally had a chance to try loading my 914 on the trailer. I set aside an entire afternoon. It worked out OK, including adjusting the car position to set the hitch weight. The winch certainly made it easy.
bkrantz
And then a short test drive. The 914 stayed on the whole time.

That's fantastic. Really nice, thoughtful work.

Basic 914 question - do you use the tow loop under the spare for winching or some other point?

No, although the tow loop and floor seem to be fully intact, I don't trust it (or want to deform it). I used the tie down loops I bolted to the front suspension mounts, and a short section of cable across the loops--and then the winch hook on the cable. Sorry I did not get a picture of that.
