Bob
beautiful work. I use your post for direction all the time and now i'm confused as I see something and can't get back to it. .Doesn't take much. Oil temp. While looking for something else , I thought i saw you make a t fitting for the pressure and temp senders both on top of the motor. But now there's that one on the taco plate. What's up?

Kevin

Hi, Kevin. The T-fitting that I tried earlier this year was only for oil pressure. I did that so I could keep the stock idiot light pressure sender and the VDO sender for my added pressure gauge. I gave up on the T for now since I could not get that to seal.

The temp sender is the stock one in the taco plate.

Thanks bob, I thought i saw it go in. Not crazy after all. is the taco plate giving you what you think is a good read?

What mountains were in the backdrop?

As many people have pointed out, the temp reading from the sump takes a long time to warm up.

The La Plata Mountains, west of Durango, CO. Peaks are 12 and 13 thousand feet.

Just a follow up. On Saturday, I went to our local C&C, which keeps growing in numbers and variety, but always has some 914 action.
bkrantz
Even better, on the morning after not one drop of oil underneath.

I am now officially declaring victory! smilie_pokal.gif

But just for this battle. I expect someday to lose the war. sad.gif

Congratulations Bob.....Job well done, you persistance paid off big time. smilie_pokal.gif

Yes--for sure in 2024!

Now to get a few more things done on my 914 before it snows.

Yes--for sure in 2024!

Now to get a few more things done on my 914 before it snows.

Shar and I are renting an RV and flat towing the 914 to Moab and Durango the third week of October. I'll let you and Mike know when we nail down a date.
bkrantz
OK, after neglecting my 914 I finally need to get busy before driving season opens. Step 1: update the task list.
bkrantz
Here's the roll bar pad, which I think is original to the car. Not terribly bad, and with uncertainty about replacements a couple of years ago, I decided to reinstall it.
bkrantz
The worst bit is the cracked center. I was able to glue these and they looked better then. But they have been bugging me.
bkrantz
Last year I bought a 914 Rubber reproduction, and let it sit in a corner.
bkrantz
If I had know they put a 2024 calendar in the box, I would have opened it sooner. Especially since I had a 2023 calendar hanging here for 3 months.
bkrantz
Time to take out the old pad, starting with the side pads (and that means unbolting the shoulder belt mount).
bkrantz
New and old. Not a bad repro.
bkrantz
Last bits to remove: the latch cover plates.
bkrantz
The mounting ears were bent out. I took the chance and bent them back in, which helped with the fit in the new pad. I also has to trim the corners in the pad recesses.
bkrantz
I also had to trim the corners in the new pad recesses, to make them more angular.
bkrantz
Final adjustment: take a bit off the sharp corners of the mounting ears.
bkrantz
Not 100% but pretty good. I did have to drill holes for the mounting ear screws.
bkrantz
Installed. I did have to punch a few new screw holes in the targa bar.
bkrantz
View from the other side.
bkrantz
No cracks--very happy! cheer.gif
bkrantz
First task in 2024 done. Now, can I keep the momentum?
930cabman
Depends if you are able to get your grandkids involved in your "hobby"

btw: lookin good
Cairo94507
Very nicely done. The remainder of the list should be a breeze for you. beerchug.gif
Dion
Targa bar looks great.

Thanks. Right now I am trying to get her hooked on Brio wooden trains.
bkrantz
Time to install the towing tie-downs (more later). I got the 914 up on jack stands for the first time in 2024.
bkrantz
Here are the rear tie downs. These mount on the shock lower bolt.
bkrantz
Step 1: pop off the rear sway bar links. A good use for the ol' ball joint fork.
bkrantz
To make clearance, I lowered the shock-spring assembly after unbolting the top mount.
bkrantz
With the trailing arm lowered, and the nut undone, the big bolt slides out.

Bob
I used 3M 8857 for a lot of rubber repairs and it seems to work well, except in extreme heat, and is sandable to make it nicer looking

Kevin
bkrantz
Here's the tie down on the bolt.
bkrantz
The challenge now is bolt length, with the nut fully engaged. I have about 120 mm to work with.
bkrantz
The trailing arm bolt tube is about 61 mm.
bkrantz
And the strut base is about 51 mm. That leaves me 8 mm.
bkrantz
The full stack of shock bottom washers, flat washer, lock washer, and new tie down is about 16 mm--way too much!
bkrantz
In the end, I used only the lock washer. With anything else, the threads on the nut were only partially engaged.
bkrantz
Then pop the sway bar link back on with a clamp.
bkrantz
Rear tie downs ready.
bkrantz
Then time for the front tie downs. I got these from Tangerine. Nicely made with new bolts included.
bkrantz
These require removal of the two side bolts on the front A-arm mounts. The 3rd bolt in front (under the shield) keeps the mount in place.
bkrantz
New vs original bolts. Both are 8.8.
