Jim, the gap on my back trunk is too wide on the passenger side also (albeit not as wide as your before picture). How do you adjust it?

First, We measured the side gaps near the engine grill and wrote them down. Then subtract the smaller gap and get the difference. This will be used after any changes.

Next, we both loosened the bolts on the trunk hinge. I pulled the hinge on my side to get the bolts closer to the edge of the hinge slot; Eddie did the opposite. Tighten up the bolts, close the lid, and remeasure.

Went through this a second time and the gaps got real close to being equal.

Then, we looked at the gaps at the rear. They were off a little; we loosed the bolts that hold the trunk latch ( the one on the lid). Moved it over a little, and ended up with the rear gaps pretty close.

Two people make this very doable. A small change on the hinges or latch make a good change....

If that wasn’t going to work, I was prepared to remove the lid and the latch. Then widen the spots on the hinge and latch where the bolts needed to be with a metal cutter _ Drexel bit. Fortunately, we did’ have to go there smile.gif

One other note: we measured the gaps with a caliper before and after each adjustment. Small changes become more evident

Working on my engine, added the oil sloshing cutouts in the rods. I know many people just use a file smile.gif

Had great time at Rt 66 BBQ meeting a bunch of great 914 owners for the first time. PMS tour was unforgetable. After that it was time to put more hours into mine. Worked on a gauge cluster terminal strip to put some simplicity into connecting new modern gauge setup to orig harness. Complete with finger nail polish color coding thanks to my daughters.

Hey Mike! Can you tell me more about this procedure? Have any pictures of completed rods? I assume this is done prior to having rods weight matched and balanced.

Thread about them. Wondering if McMark ever did this or not, he seemed not convinced it works way back then about them.

I'm just going to run 'em as is, the amount removed per rod should be pretty darn close to each other. Basically just a 90° slot that is .060" deep at the point from the surface.

No, the cable slipped thru the screw that holds it in place, Steve. A ten minute job w/ helpers Toast and Justin. I just hung back a few minutes and escorted Elliot and his clunker thru the desert. What a curmudgeon. The A/C had chilled me to the bone and he refused to loan me his jacket as we traversed the Mojave desert. happy11.gif

Celebrating an Anniversary
45 years ago today I walked into a Porsche Dealership
a few towns away and bought a 914-6 that had come back
to them traded in on a 911.

Then I had to go home and tell my dad he had to come
and sign some papers and co-sign the loan.

I was 18... and really wanted a 750 Honda... But my parents
told me to go buy a nice car instead...
Guess I showed them....

Dropped off engine tin for powder coating, picked up converted oil cooler and had the flywheel and PP plate balanced.

Fixed the 4 cyl misfiring issue and monkeyed with the brakes.

Took the '71 out of a long winter hibernation- back on the ground off the cradles and the battery back in... gonna drive it tomorrow.

Thinking I lost 4th gear somewhere /,................. I cleaned the recently purchased 901 replacement box / checked it out and found it to be a good spare with all gears showing up on dry-check on the bench / now to reseal and add gear oil and place in my car for a true check out. I all goes well, I will have a side-901 for sale back into the marketplace for some deserving soul.

Always default to the lowest common denominator. Linkage. Cheap plastic parts. grease. Clean all gunk and goo and erroneous technical advice.........

And for me, choose to attend a Dr. Evil clinic to actually know WTF.gif is going on inside of a 901 box. He knows. We, for the most part, don't....

Yes, it is sitting out in the garage.
Waiting to be put back together...
Some day when I get ambitious..

I'm starting to feel like I was never meant to drive my own 914 again.....

Wrong rod bearings now.... got them last week however not had a chance to attach rods to crank until tonight.

Rods = 1.7
Bearing = 2.0

I keep telling myself I'm learning something from these setbacks..... like I should have bought a Miata instead, hahaha.... oh well, what is another few days? I have plenty of other things to work on.

Installed a new to me MoMo steering wheel. This one is out of a factory 1983 Ferrari BB512i. The owner swapped it out on his Ferrari for a Monte Carlo MoMo back in the mid 80's. He sold his car back in 1989 and this one has been sitting in storage since then and now is back on the road in a 914. 365mm width and it feels great. driving.gif driving.gif driving.gif of course I needed to flog the car around on the twisties today to really get the feel. biggrin.gif

Adjusting linkage a the shifter this afternoon with Kieth (914Toy) in his luxuriously comfortable shop near the coast of Laguna. Nice treat to work on a 914 on a cool polished concrete floor next to another 914..............

Well, I was in the midst of trying to reorganize around here, and ran across some more parts that were scattered about. I found some extra tail light parts, so I carved out a little time to replace the passenger side lens on the '75, and posted the other tail light parts in the classifieds.

I realize it's not much, but every inch I get to move forward IS considered progress biggrin.gif

Yes, I do...1973 911 S 2.4 MFI. I like to think of it as my 916 without the flares, bumpers, and plush carpet.

Horn button is a wheel cap attached to a momo horn button from eBay. The cap is attached using 3M extreme outdoor double sided tape. I have used this method in the past and it works great.

Yes, I have a 356 shift knob on a Rennshifter. It was a tight fit towards the bottom but it has been on for years working well. i used a wrap of electrical tape as a shim at the top of the Rennshifter stem. I like to think of it as a 904 knob rather than a 356 knob. I have seen the same knob in factory 904's. Mentally makes the car faster. I think the later 356 and 904 used the same shift knob.

Finally finished sandblasting and recoating engine tins, fans and fan housing. Used Dupli-Color engine enamel paint and Alumi Blast.

Full kitchen remodel in AZ is my next weeks' project. The trusty 914 goes into garage in Laguna for a rest.
