I stripped both rear calipers off (one at a time) to clean up on the outer side of the seals. Replaced the pad seperator springs, genuine ones available from porsche.

Adjusted the pads to 0.2mm clearance. bled up nicely. pedal now goes to the floor and the sodding brake light flashes on the gauge. left it!

moved onto the rattle in the passenger door. found it and found that the window mech had popped off one of the channels. sorted that too.

also found a flaky patch of paint under the door. that's been primed and ready for colour.

Still have no brakes though. ah well back to it another day.

Getting ready to put the engine back in. My first time.

I got the hardware all set up and positioned the engine under the car. Read all the engine removal/ install threads I could find.

Have to get up the nerve to just do it tomorrow ...

Big day, take your time and give it another day or so to get things right.

It's in! Took about 2 hours with a bit of cussing, scrapes and dirty up to my elbows. That felt good!!!

We went to the Diablo Region PCA Wash 'n Shine at the Danville Livery. Very nice comfortable location; had about 100 Porsches in the show. Good crowd of people with music and Mexican food. What's not to like?

Oh, and I caught Greg T. trying to smuggle Steve's daughter, Maddie, into the show:

Sadly, my co-pilot (brother) took no pictures. It was 236 miles round-trip driving.gif and essentially no traffic on the way there and very light traffic on the way home. beerchug.gif

I snuck my BIL into the infield at the Daytona 24 in the early '70's in the front trunk, after taking out the spare of course... so it can be done!

Worked on the loose ends now that the engine is back in. Today I got the cables all situated, shift linkage back in place, axles bolted on (with new schnoor washers), replaced the oil filter and started filling with oil.

Just have a few bits left. Will install a new 12pin connector for relay board (mine was MIA and a super mess, including a terminal block screwed to the side of the relay board with jumper wires soldered to the board barf.gif ). Then connect the throttle cable and fuel line and that should do it for now.

Hope to have her rolling this weekend.

FINALLY! After almost 6 years of ownership, and almost 7 months in the shop of the restoration body shop, I picked up my sweet 914 now back in its original Malaga Red and brought her home today! THIS IS HUGE! Tons of pics and details on my original thread from 2017....

Got all the topside wiring done and put the battery back in. Thought I might have messed something up when the engine was out as the starter solenoid was clicking but the starter not turning. Ends up I forgot to wire the heavy cable from the battery to the starter. Once that was sorted, she started right up! Tomorrow is going to be a driving day - the first of the summer.

finally got out for a drive.
between the weather, 1000km + work trip up country on a remote job, hangovers, etc i got to rebond with "the jaffa" (google it) this weekend for 2 hours.
a mid winters day that was sunny and almost t-shirt-able.

i got to say i love this car after 30+ years and having been trapped in my audi A3 sportback for 5 days going up country for over 1000k, the audi is comfortable, sort of, but boring as all hell and the 914, well you got to drive it rather than sit in it.

fingers crossed i did not cop another speeding ticket for going 4kmh over our ridiculous inner city post covid revenue raising idiotic inconsistent speed zones.

i never would have thought australia would descend to its current levels of stoopidity.
fortunately i can still drive my 14 to relieve the migraine of existence in north antarctica.

where i get into trouble is i still have a mph speedo in the 14.
but its metric down here since circa 1975.
it used to be easy until the last few years.
3 common speed limits. all easily convertible in my mind to kph.
60kph = 35 mph. 80 = 50 100 = 60.
but now we have
30kph 40kph 50kph 60kph 70kph 80 kph 100 kph 110 kph.
all this has happened in late stages of covid lockdown while driving and leaving home for most was verbotten. they went around screwing up new signs everywhere. and they are still doing it. combine that with revision of definition of speeding from 10% over to 2% for urban speed limits (30-80) and 3% for highway (100-110) and you can see the problem.

i'm fairly certain some of the zones are cynically positioned to enhance revenue collection as the state finances are worse than a mess after the bumbled covid lockdowns. some of them have nothing to do with road safety given where the roads are and the condition and design of the streets. its just done to trap you. nuts. confused24.gif

i noticed it going up country too. hadn't been where i went since 4 years ago.
lots of variable speed limits imposed on sections of open highway. you had to pay attention to the signs. and sure enough there would be a camera car positioned strategically. apparently zones were situated where there had been bushfire damage to the roads after the big fires 3 years back. except the road had been repaired.
but the zones were still there. mad.gif

Got it out of the garage and drove it. Nothing fell off and had no strange noises. Seems I got the wiring in the 14 and 12 pin relay board connectors right, as well as the fasteners holding the engine and transmission in.

Made it about 10min when it started raining. This car is not rain-ready. Drove home and parked it. Will try again tomorrow.

While I was not driving, installed new pedal rubber covers. Also installed new rubber rings around the instruments. They would fall out over bumps which, while amusing the first few times, got old really fast. The old rings pretty much fell apart as I pulled them off.

Nice drive up to the WCR, but the drive back from Tahoe was a mess. Construction and accidents everywhere. Drove through 97 degree heat on the I5 south. Almost got ran over by a semi that was trying to dodge another semi that was stopped in the slow lane. I luckily squeezed between two cars next to me, so he could have my lane. My car ran awesome and cool all the way back. I wish I could say the same for me. I downed tons of water with multiple pit stops. Note to self…. Fix AC before next event.

Yes, when I was younger. Now that I'm 62, I thought I was going to die of heat stroke. I had the top on and the windows half way down doing between 80-100 when there was no traffic or construction. The Electric AC works in my car, but creeps up to 100 amps and blows the circuit breaker. It should stay at 60 amps. We installed the same system in Keith's car and his works fine.

I'm posting while sitting in a new race car (bomber seat) chair that I just finished. I never felt the urge to build a race car chair from my Sparco but as soon as I saw this kit my thoughts went right there. While I was searching this out I ran into a chair that totally resembles an early Speedster seat. So that seat became my new goal for the race car.

Finished CHT sensor and gauge install. It works great with temps around 310 after an hour of driving. That's right in the range from Jeff Bowlsby's CHT article.

I think removing the mouse nests from the cylinders might have helped a bit ...

that right there is a LOT of work, i did my engine compartment 2 years ago, and the rear trunk floor too at that time, that old zbart crap they sprayed on was horrible- im going to do the floor pan this summer, and thinking about taking it up to Charlotte and have the cryo blasting dry ice blast or what ever itis , done, that is kind of the last frontier of my restoration.
i found that brake cleaner for some of the stubborn spots will take that off without taking off my paint, but it can if your not careful, i wouldnt do it othewise but on the floors and inner rockers im going to get that all cleaned up enough to re-paint and might do the tinted bed liner or lizard skin im not sure yet.

The dry ice method appears to be the easy button for sure, but being a CSOB I am trying to do it in house. Does brake cleaner cut through the old undercoating?

The RAT Engen came back from PMB for me and Mark Sonners to take down to find out why it has a tick in it. Sounded like an exhaust leak but it had low oil pressure so we will find out. This was a Jake build not just RAT parts.

Is she not firing at idle only? or under acceleration or crusising?
CCE
Got my carburetors idle jet unclogged, new 3,1/4” trumpets, and filters, new brake pads, rotors serviced, new front bearings installed, new rear springs, and finally replaced the shift lever that broke, reviewed the valve springs sitting, some minor electrical things and some major oil leaks, and my oil temp meter works perfect now! biggrin.gif
Oh, and installed my AN6 fittings for the Carbs

Finally I drove the car today and is completely a new car. Just needs jetting now, we will find a dynamometer for that. driving.gif

Now it needs a lot of cleanup underneath as you can see, the oil leak in the head gasket was severe… barf.gif
