Finally was able to polish out the deck lid of the '75 today. The Omni line it was shot it looked wet when it was fresh but after a few months it almost looked like was shot to dry. It wasn't though, just the way the clear coat cured.
Cut it back 2500, the 3000 grit sand paper, used compound and a polish and then a coat of S100 carnauba wax.
I was a bit concerned at first because I had heard that the Omni line clear coat was really hard and didn't cut or polish very well but this went very nice.
Next week, I'll do the front lid, it's suffering from the same thing.

One of the things I'm working on is trying to make my car shift better. I was clicking the gears through on this trans and noticed slop in neutral. So I looked through the hole where the console mounts and noticed a fair sized gap on the rods where the fork (?) drops in and moves the rod to shift gears. I had an extra fork so I thought I'd try something.
I welded blobs onto the fork and ground them into a shape. Don't know if it will work, it will bug me all night but I ran out of light.

Didn’t fit, had to shave the sides down. With it fitting I got the slop down to less than a 1/16”.

No I’m in the desert so it is warm here. I sat it in the sun for a bit and used a wire feed. Once I’m happy I’ll do my best to harden the piece.

Ok, I’m happy. Now I need to harden this puppy. I will try to just heat the tangs and sacrifice a fresh quart of oil for the quenching. It was fun, can’t use my hands for now.

@930cabman - No sun exposure, just hadn't been polished since it was painted and there was a lot of orange peel in it. If I can get to the front lid this weekend, I'll be very happy but, life interrupts a lot of things......

Maybe I should have said it is more than strong enough for the job it will be doing...But I did try to break it off, it is not budging.
Guy said the aluminum cast from those days is crap, full of impurities and oils and it was hard to weld. Had to have recieved good penitration, I had to sand the console to flatten out the cast where it raised from the weld. Yeah it's ugly but it's on there

I removed my driver's side door panel today and repaired the door handle (replaced all broken plastic bits) and removed and lubed the latch mechanism. Then I drove her for about 2 hours to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
Tomorrow I need to replace the broken horn button ring and faulty wiper switch.
So many projects, so little time.

I’m using a steering column shaft to finish the console but it has to be turned down and a cone screw hole put in and the trans portion will be done. So off to find the cheapest machinist in the Coachella Valley.

going to be doing the same and pulling the door card this afternoon so i can repair the latch mechanism, as soon as my package of small repair parts arrives from 914rubber, the cam actuator thing that slides and unlatches the door when you pull the outer handle snapped off last week while in Amelia making it necessary to use inner handle only for opening door. That was supposed to arrive yesterday. So full out rainy day meant cancellation of our C&C for this month.

Two new Yokohama tires on rear. Two of the Riken Raptors had developed flat spots during my 2 years off the road & NTB (Mavis) replaced them under Road Hazard guarantee for very little - they did have 3,000 miles on them and were 3 years old.
Nice smooth ride but still vibration showing at 50 - 60mph that I need to chase down.
Still loving driving my Ruby as my daily driver......
Oh - new carpet going in next week - one of last items on my restoration list.

I’ve been searching for a bellow dust boot that would work for my project. I needed one that would fit the reproduction dust cover for the shift console, it needed to be big enough to fit over the 914 steering system u-joints and on the other end small enough to fit the shift rod. And not so darn long it looks funny. Universal Steering Rack Boot

Since it has been raiing here for the last six months , I had plenty of time to surf on the forum and I found a way to get rid of the smog pump lines. The smog pump itself was already removed by the PO. So I took out everything and closed the holes with copper plumbing end caps and a little bit of teflon. It works perfectly.
