I replaced my broken gear shift knob with one of those GB $19.99 specials from the folks at 914rubber. Thank you Mike for the steal deal for my daily driver!

And I also installed my replacement rear trunk spring. Now I can cruise topless and not worry about finding somebody to lift my trunk when I push the inside-the-car trunk release button!

The Cabinetmaker (Curt Curtis) saw my earlier post about my faulty trunk spring, and PM'ed me that he might be able to help. So he looked around his shop, found what I needed, and shipped it out...all without asking for a dime! Thank you to the Cabinetmaker! And thanks to this 914 community, as that kind of behavior is not uncommon!

What did I do to my car today?

How about what did it do to me?!!!!

Removed what is left of the lower trumpet after my tire took it to task on a right hand turn on the test drive for my newly installed motor and tranny. Horn. He Gone... The motor ran great / idles smoothly at 1800 for a minute or so, then settles into a 900 rpm idle / blips up the scale smoothly and pulls at a conservative estimate of 2x my 1.7FI motor (which ran just fine before changing it our for this higher education).

The tranny shifting I sorted out after some very good advise from bdstone (Bruce) and all gears are there and shift nicely. What is not there is tranny oil.

The box did not drop a drip when filled and sitting for three days during the install and linkage tuning. The box did not drop a drip during the first three 1/4 mile loops in the neighborhood to check out the motor. Once I went for a real 5-gear test, BOOM! The main seal must have dearly departed because by the time I retuned to Laguna, the EPA had an APB out for little ole me. I was traced to my secrete (misspelled on porpoise) hideout by the dollar-sized blotches of fresh tranny oil splattered from Irvine down Laguna Canyon to the beach.

Upon clearing the smoke and neighbors, and upon undercarriage inspection, my newly refinished headers look like baked chocolate swirl sausages wrapped in mud. My tranny sports a patina of greenish grey with hints of auburn (or just... Ah.. burn) The underside of the little beast from the engine back looks worse than a beach in north Santa Barbara and the back bumper has a dust coating held to the car with a fine mist of gear oil infused with road grime.

Keep in mind that prior to this undertaking, I drove virtually nonstop - with Larmo doing parallels - all the way to WCR just before the new motor install began. At WCR, the mouse kept up with alll of the big cars..... in the parking lot.. not under power of course.... Consider that the lowly 1.7FI never missed a beat and needed only an occasional plug set, oil change, and the obligatory face mask to hide behind (or in Larmo's case a great domed helmet and bug-eyed goggles) / The 1.7 would regularly and dependably take me from the coast to Scottsdale to my Motor head Son's place wherein I could be roundly rebuked for bringing the sounds of clatter, spanks, clanks, and the put-put of the 1.7 to a place where 400HP is fairly weak.......

What did I do to my 914 today you ask? I put it on jack stands..... AGAIN!. beerchug.gif

I'm confused (not hard to do) - are you talking about the red car that has the new 2.2L and the transaxle with recently resealed output shafts? Where is it leaking from?

What's the pic of the gray car all about?

... and what's with the pic of the rod?

I'm sure it all makes sense confused24.gif

Relocated my CDI ignition box from inside the passenger compartment to the engine bay (high pitched sound is annoying)

Installed a back pad to see if that reduces the decibels of the 6 fan.

Checked out a V8 conversion for sale in my neighborhood.

but thanks or reminding me of the prior days of non-bliss ho hum with a snoozer 1.7 FI that the average PCH Bus routinely blew off the road........

I'm sure it all makes sense confused24.gif to me.......

and Sense or cents is a figure of speech.... the grey car is the gold car is the red car....... leaks? leaks schmke!

This thing leaks more than my 57 Chris Craft woody on a calm sea ...... but WTF.gif

today I plucked the tranny, pulled the main shaft seal, and then magically Larmo showed up with a 5th of positive influence and a newly installed seal we coaxed the tranny back into the gold/grey red car.....

tomorrow is cv gaskets from the local VW shop in Costa Mesa (at a fraction of the PP price) and back to the road for another test...

more to follow........

Well that cleared things up - clear as mud! I guess the 914 is built too low and all that went over my head.

Anyway - I'm summer-izing my 914 (as opposed to winterizing) since I'll be travelling soon. Is it better to sit on jack-stands for two months or sit on the tires? It is currently in the air (been polishing up my old Riviera Mags) and outside, but I plan on putting the wheels back on and parking it inside shortly.
euro911
Placing a 914 on jack stands serves a few purposes:

1. it prevents flat spots on your tires
2. it relieves pressure on the springs, torsion bars and bushings
3. it allows any sagging in the longs to correct itself

Took out all the extra wiring for the headlight relays and installed the LED headlights in the '73. Now I have LIGHTS!! And those will come in handy in the dark Arizona nights...
Now I have to justify spending that money all over again to put those lights in my '71. Got old H4's in that and they could use some improvement.
The LED bulbs in the other lights (from spoke) were such an improvement, I figured the headlights must be good too, and there were a LOT of recommendations here for them.

Small paint job!

There's a guy down the road from my house who runs a local paintshop. He's more into Jaguars etc, but loved the looks of the Teener. It took him back to his days as an apprentice...

He has repainted the area under the spare wheel.

Pics later today.

EDIT: here's a pic. Note the little hole in the middle of the floor, near the bulkhead. Under the hole, on the outside, there's now a 'bailer' like you find on a sailing dinghy: when you drive, the air going under the car 'sucks' the air and moist from under the spare wheel. Jags have a similar system.

Got everything laid out but didn't want to burn holes in my new trunk floor, so I asked a master welder friend. he is certified to weld in nuclear power plants so he is my go-to guy for anything even slightly tricky.

these welds are so pretty I hate to clean them up with a grinder. like ruining artwork.

Thanks!

Point is that 914Rubber beautifully made parts are eyewatering expensive to ship to Europe... according to the website, sending simple items like the pre mentioned rubbers will set me back more than $ 80.00 - for shipment alone. I am sure you can see why I'm not to happy with that.

If there's a way around that, I would certainly like to hear (read) it.

I understand that larger boxes would cost a bunch. Check costs for USPS first-class mail. I don't think shipping a few small items in a padded envelope would be much at all. Contact Mark to see if they can ship in an envelope using that method confused24.gif

Forrest and I yanked my tank out (finally) and cleaned up the 42 year-old mess in there so we could install my front sway bar. I also hooked up my gas tank sender which had the wires sheared off and re-attachment was all but impossible with the tank in. It's nice to now have a working gas gauge.

I took it for a drive and it is quite nice for cornering. I wouldn't characterize it as "day and night," but it does make you want to go find some twistys. I suppose the road we drove up in San Simeon at the last WCR would have been a bit more enjoyable with the sway bar in. Rear bar goes in next.

Made a new adapter for my own personal use...Volvo Redblock to Ford T5 transmission, used some scrap material laying around. The 1st adapter I made I didn't use my brain and omitted the centering ring, not a good design at all.

Can your CNC do steel? Also how small of bits?

Yep...

A bracket I made for my other car......I have endmills down to 1/8"(smaller now that I think about it) , but ideally larger such as 1/4" or bigger better since my spindle rpm isn't the highest.

Might want to read up on that rear bar. There are some pretty strong opinions on those. Also, are those SS braided brake lines? If so, you might want to read up on those as well. They're new, so no worries now but later............ beerchug.gif
agree.gif ... I was gonna say, save your time and money on the rear anti-sway bar set up - don't need it ... the front is all you'll ever need shades.gif

As for the S/S braided hoses, if they're DOT approved, you should be OK, but inspect them them often idea.gif

Other than that - carry on ...

OH that is sick... I would spend so much time doing cad drawings of the stuff I freehand...

fabricated an antenna puller from an old house key.

When I bought the car, the radio did work, but there was no sound. I turned out to be the antenna: it was fully sunk. First attempt to pull it out failed. I had to reach inside the wheel arch to push it upwards.

I've fabricated a 'puller from an old house key and with a bench grinder and some tool it now works.

And the radio works. Pulling the antenna did the trick. First song I heared on the radio: Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4! How 70s can it be!

Here's what you do. You and your 914 buddies order everything you want from 914rubber in one large order + one round trip airline ticket. I will bring whatever we can fit in 2 suitcases. biggrin.gif

Tempting... but even more tempting is to get them myself. I've never been to the US West Coast! East Coast many times, but somehow the Continental Divide is too high for me to cross confused24.gif

Man, it is sure nice to have a working gas gauge for the first time. The wires on the back of the gauge were flip-flopped and I got used to it not functioning.
