Well, the wheel repair shop that I took my bent wheel to up in LA said they couldn't fix it
... so I called around and found a shop in Santa Ana that said they can typically repair what others can't - so that's where I took it yesterday afternoon. When Jeff spun it on the spindle, he thought they could only guarantee that it could get to about 85 ~ 90%. He called another guy to look at it and he said maybe 90 ~ 95%
Jeff called this AM and said it's ready. When I got there, he hoisted it up on the spindle again, and damned if they didn't get it almost perfectly true. They claimed it's 98 ~ 99%, and I'm perfectly happy with that
They cleaned up the minor curb rash too
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentIt did cost a little more than I was expecting, but since these wheels aren't too abundant these days, I think it was worth it
Click to view attachmentI highly recommend these folks
Now it's my turn - need to clean all of them up a bit, and maybe even have them powder-coated ?

I had to paint one black to match the 'BB' a few years ago.
There was a guy (Bill) that used to attend the G&R Swap Meet, that custom-painted them in any factory color one wanted. He also installed different wheels on them. I bought a white one from him for my wife

I blew up rear brake line and/or regulator. Not sure yet but brake fluid is all over the firewall and the pedal went to floor.
Good news was the Brake Emergency light worked and started flashing...

Took a long lunch and changed out the worn out left output shaft seal on my DD.
Expected to see a wear pattern on the shaft. None.
The seal actually is worn out. Didn't measure it. You could see it with the naked eye.

Working on stuck rear brake. Bled the system, removed parkingbrake, pads etc.
Pushed piston back, which went well. First trying if this will fix things. If it doesnt I will rebuild caliper.

i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.
i'll start,
about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?
yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.
what did you do to your 914 today?
Picked up the motor today. Just about ready to button up and put back in the car. We should be driving it in 30-45 days or so. Getting excited.

Car started running weird. Runs great cold then after about 15 minutes it starts misfiring and spitting up the carb on #4 cyclinder.
So dropped by my friends shop (local friendly Porsche guy) to run a compression test. Unfortunately it was being used on the Cobra. He's got a broken piston but mine is still a puzzle to be solved.
...painting on the wall is a 914. He's got a Boxster engine sitting around that he wants to put in my car...I keep telling him it won't fit...gotta get the 4 running smooth again.

The driver side rear fender is too dimpled to flat with just spray primer so I stripped it back and put a thin skim of filler on it. Then rubbed most of it back off! The drivers door was painted as a tester but then my son opened the garage door and this caused a wind gust which threw up a dust cloud and stuck to the door.
Will rub down and repaint when I'm happy with the rear wing
Part of my 914 rubber order arrived today and hopefully the rest will arrive tomorrow.

I have a theory on Porsche shops/mechanics; they are either affordable=slow and totally unorganized, or good service=really, really expensive.
Plus, finding a person who will even work on a 914 is a trick in and of itself.
Front axle is getting close to being done on my car. I can do this myself, but I traded out some labor.

I bought one. It is my third 914. My first was in high school. I wish I had taken pictures almost as much as I wish I had it back.
My second was a project. The PO had done a masterful job covering a little metal and a lot of rust with fiberglass. I was glad to get rid of it.
This one is UGLY but it has very little rust. It has spent it's life in California, Nevada, and Arizona. It is another project but it is a good starting point. The worst part is it needs a little body repair on the passenger side fenders.

Did a tune-up on my 1.7. Replaced plug wires with Fyrebriad wires. Wires provides thermal insulation at operating temperature of 850 degrees! I hope it never gets that hot. I like how they dress up and the engine and the wires are not laying on the engine.

Last night ................
Took the wife and did the August SCCA Friday night TSD rally. Come to find out these are trap style rallies and a little over our pay grade for ones first TSD rally. LOL.
Only had to call the Rallymaster once. LOL.Blew by the first check point without stopping, but scored a 37.
It went downhill from there. Final score 937. But we weren't the worst. High score 1238.
Winning score 18.
Absolutely bitch'n roads. Had a ball.
Hint : Read the rule book about 3 times and it would make your first rally a little easier.
Us not, cold turkey.

Last weekend I replaced the whole brake system on Betty's 914 with freshly rebuilt PMB calipers and pads. Grabbed the 17mm master cylinder off the shelf instead of the 19mm. The brakes work fine, but she hates the length of the pedal travel. Putting the 19mm on was supposed to be tomorrow's task. Maybe I can get her to do the replacement, and I can be the helper.
Today I bled all over my new 4.0L engine.
But at least I have started assembling it.

Ford Duratec powerplant/ v6 24v. Workhorse of an engine...been around since the mid 90's
Today these variants have gone from 2.5L up to 3.7L (plus big bore kits), also the foundation for the Ecoboost engine (Ford gt, LeMans 2016) podium
I have several customers using MSDS headers , vortec supercharger on 3L
with 5 speed/ quaiffe lsd...stuffed on a Ford contour. 400+ hp on 10 psi boost. Noble gt made a good engine choice
