Looks great! Match looks perfect in the picture, I am curious as to what paint brand did he use? My painter did sample 4 before getting one they actually matched the OEM Copper Metallic.
Phil

I’ll ask Art; I know he starts with the L99K paint code; and, he had done various other panels and parts over the years with the same perfection.
And, I had him paint a brand new LE valance for future installation

Feels good to get things working. shades.gif

I was driving the car yesterday and finally got tired of the sticking fuel level sending unit. Ordered it yesterday morning arrived this afternoon. Took about 45 minutes to switch it. It will be nice knowing I’m not going to run out of gas now!

A neighbor & friend just got a job wrenching at a Classic American shop. They have a 73 914 1.7L for some reason, that they haven't been able to get running. So I've been on the phone helping him work thru the problems so he looks good for the boss beerchug.gif
He stopped by after work today and I sonic cleaned the injectors, showed him how some of the FI operates, and lent him my Haynes manual.

I also did a few minor things to Project:IceGreen

Picked up a real nice painted rear valance from John ( @johnc ) and got to see a lot of the projects he's working on.

Nice to run into another local VW/P-car enthusiast.

Installed passenger side rear-view mirror. Made a pattern from the drivers' side, flipped it and drilled from the outside (I couldn't get my hands, with a punch, and a hammer into the door cavity to mark from the inside). This was the most stressful thing I have done to this car. Soooo worried about getting the holes wrong. Drilled a small (very small) pilot hole, then gradually larger. My pattern was slightly off, so I had to use a small diameter rat tail file to finish things up.

Loosened all brake caliper hardware front and back, ordered 4 calipers and all pads from PMB.

Entered my VIN (finally) into the database. Apparently a user named "deano" used to own this car (or at least made an entry with my VIN into the dB)?

Removed front bumper and valence. Going to detail the fog lights, clean everything up, and I have a new/used/better condition valence to reinstall. Look at that beautiful OG Raveena green that lives on behind the valence! And, of course, none of the hardware is correct for the bumper or the valence...

Anyone know where I can get the correct hardware for bumper and valence mounting?

several venders have these, I do know AA has them, but you can get the stuff at Lowes or Home Depot hardware isle .

ALSO I did finally get my brakes bled last night!!! now I don't think I have a 100% hard pedal like before , so I may have to bleed them again. had my daughter pump the pedal for me, I thought I had speed bleeders so that I could do this myself but didn't seem to be working so just did it the old way, but it really didn't take that long. on my test drive I was able to lock up the brakes with full pressure on the pedal so I think we are close. no leaking from the new 914rubber master cylinder or supply lines. new fittings are good to go!

Not a damn thing. I'm here in Florida for a stay and the 914 is in Ohio with the engine out. Removed it after we got back from Octeenerfest and fixed an oil leak or two or three. Awaited Tangerine Racing remote oil cooler set up, arrived after I left for Florida. Can't wait to get back North to do this install

Now with a winter house here in Florida maybe I need a second 914, interesting thought.

Pulled the wheel and shipped it to Dallas Custom Steering Wheel and all 6 of the gauges will be dropped at North Hollywood Speedo for a freshen, the tach dampened and the speedo recalibrated for the current tire size.

Turn signal switch will get replaced as one of the cancel tabs was broken off and the wiper switch will get replaced to accommodate an electric washer pump.

Received my .060 idle jets for my Weber IDF 44's yesterday and installed them last night, pulled the .050's.

Hoping to now get some smooth transition power from idle to 2,000 - 2,500 rpm......

Will test drive today & hopefully set idle mixture screws, balance carbs........

Thursday - installed PMB restored calipers on all 4 corners, had to re-make hard lines for front brakes. Thankfully I bought a brake line flaring tool years ago for a Toyota project. Seems some PO had installed some beemer calipers. PMB refurbished calipers almost too pretty to hide behind wheels.

Friday bled brakes, painted new/used front valence, detailed front bumper and fog lights. Cleaned and re-oiled K&N air filters, re-set carb synchronization.

Saturday, installed newly repainted front valence, installed detailed fog lights and front bumper, bled brakes (again). Drove it and bedded in pads. Bled brakes (again) and re-set pad/rotor clearance on rears.

Today (Sunday) drove it. Still need to bleed more air out of the lines.

My little red 914 has a BRAND NEW ENGINE! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! The 60 idle jets are perfect!

Don’t think it could run better if it were new! Well, it is idling a bit fast at about 1200 rpm…….but IT HAS MORE POWER THAN EVER and is smooth as silk in all power situations, slow acceleration, fast acceleration, light on the pedal, hard on the pedal, from off pedal to just barely touching it she has nice smooth power, pulling smoothly under all load conditions. Cruises easily at 70mph just barely touching the pedal.

No coughing, surging, missing, stumbling, backfiring or anything like that - purrs smoothly at idle better than ever. I am honestly shocked at how well it is running - thought the new jets would take some tweaking for sure - but now it’s running so well I am honestly afraid to touch anything. As the 60’s were 20% larger than the 50’s, I dialed each idle mixture screw in about 1/2 turn after putting them in, knowing they would need to be leaned out a bit.

The idle speed screw is not touching the throttle, and she’s idling a bit fast…..so I may have to turn the idle mixture screws in just a tad more. I also thought jumping from 50’s to 60’s might not work and there was a chance I’d have to drop down to 55’s - but at this point I think the 60’s could not be improved on.

The engine is running so well and has so much power that I cannot imagine the D-jet running it any better - or producing more power.

It is interesting that in Bob Tomlinson's Weber Tech Manual for VW & Porsche engines, his chart clearly says that the proper idle jets size for dual IDF-44's on a 2.0 is 60. But even if I had installed them in March, they would not have worked well because of the serious vacuum leaks at the base of the intake manifolds - only 2,000 miles after the local Porsche dealer installed them.....which I diagnosed, located and corrected only a couple weeks ago. Who ever expects loose intake manifold bolts only 2k miles after they are installed by a dealer?????

Cannot thank all of you enough for all your support and patience through this long ordeal - but I think we are almost there on the engine side - needing only to put the cooling flaps in and installing a new alternator…….

Doc -

Thank you so much - and thank you for not chewing me out for sticking with my carbs for now - biggrin.gif

But my plan from day one has been to first get the engine running well with the carbs and make sure all the engine internals are good. And consider my D-jet going in after that.

This little car is more fun to drive than my Cayman S with a re-mapped ECU, and will become my daily driver soon!

Someday we need a re-paint restoring it to its original Malaga Red.

Much more to do - but it's all fun - making progress......

GN

PS: EVERYTHING is working on the car! Cept my alternator.....

Washed it along with the rest of the aging fleet.

Man, iPhone and pic orientation dont work well on this site. The first pic showed up like below, so I moved the original 90* and it still came out the same way. It just wants to do what it wants. Just chalk it up to sticky tires.

I get to practice my ship in a bottle skills. Replacing my FI harness with a brand new set from Jeff Bowsley. Also replacing temperature head sensor and throttle gasket too.

I lot to remove and document before removing. Replacing my hoses which I am in a tear down. I found removing the trunk lid and engine hood makes the job much easier.

Fingers crossed and hoping everything goes back correctly.

Finally got around to installing 10mm front wheel spacers. Thought I might need longer studs, but Keith (914 Toy) thought I still had sufficient room left on the current studs
Pictures show the driver side with the 10mm spacer and the passenger side without the spacer.
Other shots show the 5 lug billet hubs attached to SC rotors. Studs seem to be 73 mm long. The lugs are on with 6 1/2 full turns each
