I installed new bilsteins in the rear with sleeve over C/O kit. Really interested see how much differently the car will handle, though I wont find out until I get the motor back in.

Removed the gas tank, front fuel lines, fuel pump and filter since they are all up front on the 75. Removed the blower box, grill and gasket, them removed the wiper rack. I washed out 40 years of DIRT!. I wanted to get everything clean before I started to remove the fuel lines. Then got after removing them to get ready to install the metal ones from Tangerine. Got the old lines out. Next up was the overhaul of the wiper rack and clean it up. It was running slow and stopping. Got that done and called it a day.

I'm curious how much better your wiper mechanism will work after you cleaned it up. Are there any serviceable parts that get replaced?

I went to cars & coffee in Aliso Viejo. Lots of nice cars and as usual mine was the only 914. Came home and wired my car alarm into the DME so it won't start when the alarm is on. Extra security, but I don't know how much it will help.

If your DME is in an accessible place, just pull the relay and put it in your pocket.

I did that to one of mine and it is like night and day. The shafts that the wiper arms fasten to were basically rusted into the tubes between the 2 big nuts, they were turning in a sort of rust soup. I cleaned everything up and sanded and polished the shafts, packed them with grease and put the whole thing back together. Now the wipers move twice as fast per setting than either of my other 2 cars. That sucks because now I have to do them.......one of these days. I bet most are like that to some extent because I never saw 914 wipers move this fast. dry.gif

Lawrence, Forrest and I dropped the 2.0L out of my '67 911, then hoisted it into Lawrence's truck.

The transaxle had no problems and doesn't leak anywhere, so I decided to remove the motor without the transaxle - actually went pretty well considering this was the first time I'd ever attempted this method. It was good having three people to do it though shades.gif

However, we did run into some negative issues. We stripped the end splines on a triple square tool trying to remove two of the flywheel bolts dry.gif ... I ground a 1/4" or so off the end of the tool while Forrest took a MAP Gas torch to the bolts - and we finally got 'em out aktion035.gif

After they left, I tied the rear of the transaxle up with a ratchet strap and removed the floor jack. Used the tops of the shocks stems as the suspension points.

The TO bearing had more slop than I liked, so removed it and pulled a new one from stock. I need to do a little clean up in the bell housing and re-grease a few places next. The flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate all looked good - need to order some new flywheel bolts and then I can slap this puppy on the replacement 2.0L motor.

As usual, forgot to take a camera to the shop screwy.gif

About finished with the passenger seat. I think the hardest part is trying to get the headpiece backside to fit. I installed 914rubber 's seat heat kits on this as well. I have some foam repair on the drivers side so it won't be so easy.

We met out in Orange for coffee, a little drive through the back canyons/twistys, and breakfast BS session at Ruby's Diner in Laguna Beach. There were 4 /6 cars of different sorts, a V8 conversion, (all very fast cars) and two (one was mine) 1.7s bringing up the rear. What a great morning!!!

That seat looks great!

Last weekend I got the car completely stripped down. Dropping the suspension and removing the rusty rocker panels this coming weekend. Then it's off to media blasting!

Also decided to NOT go with the Audi V8. After tearing it down found that it would not be worth the hassle. So, out it goes and now I'm shopping for another motor!

Daughter found an '02 Jetta TDI she wanted... 4 hours away dry.gif

We had the option of driving her Kia without a/c via the interstate OR take the 914 and a more adventurous route via Foothills Parkway and the Dragon. Yep, she chose the 914 biggrin.gif

Of course, the chosen route ended up taking over 5 hours but that included a short stop to visit with Jake Raby. (Thanks for the fuse). He has my 2056 in the build stage and I hope to have it in time to install for Okteenerfest drooley.gif

Met the seller of the Jetta in Lawrenceville and, after the paperwork was done and money handed over, we headed home - this time via I-75.

The TDI did great and my 914, well... made it home. rolleyes.gif

Roundtrip was over 400 miles and nearly 10 hours of drive time. Not bad for a tired engine that used 3 qts of oil blink.gif

I don't know about TDIs, but the gasoline engines in the 'newer' VWs burn oil as well - not as much as your tired T4, but even the owners manual says 1qt./1k mikes is acceptable blink.gif Make sure she checks the dip-stick every other fiil-up idea.gif

I actually found that the dipstick tube was broken at the mount (typical) and oil barely registered on the stick. Stopped at an Advance Auto and bought a jug of oil for the trip home. Added a couple quarts. Haven't had a chance to see how much was lost.

Our '05 TDI doesn't use much oil if any between changes.

IIRC, in the 914 manual, the acceptable oil usage stated is something like 1 qt per 1000 miles.

I had heard that also. So when I saw some blue smoke on startup week before last, I checked my oil level. But since I had just changed the oil, it was too clean to see on the dipstick. So I added a quart to be sure. And then I drove it for 1200 miles. Still too clean, but it looked low. So during another 1200 mile weekend I added a 2nd quart (2700 miles since the change). And now that the oil is dirty enough to see on the dipstick, I am two centimeters above the top mark on the dipstick. No oil burn whatsoever, nor any oil drip-age. Engine rebuilt by PO about 25K ago.

How bad is it to overfill oil by two quarts?
Should I drain off the excess?
Or just wait a couple more weekends (2500 miles hi way) and change the oil then?

Rebuilt my side shift console - replaced the seals and bushings - ready for project 'Transmeggedon' at the weekend (which in English involves me installing the tangerine firewall bushing and shift linkage, and, while I'm in there and have the tranny drained, replacing the speedo drive with a new double seal one from 914rubber and the diff output shaft seals in an effort to stop my tranny leaking like, well, me after 8 beers).

Yeah, no... get that oil out of there ASAP! All kinds of bad things besides smoking, excess cavitation in the oil pan and all sorts of oil going where it's not supposed to go. Possible engine damage if you drive it too far- maybe I'm exaggerating, but only slightly.
