I hung on to my Garmin because it still works when I am outside on cell tower range.

Looking good, Travis. How'd you cut out the trunk panel? ... saws-all? sawzall-smiley.gif

(I need to replace a section of the front trunk pan in the 'BB' (EX-A/C car).
TravisNeff
I used a HF air powered sawzal thingy. Broke in 10 minutes, then went to a cutoff wheel and that did the trick

5 914’s today

Took the 914 out to a vintage tractor show. Back home I did a bit of work on the Fuchs wheels I want to put on the car. A bit scuffed up, this one needed some welding.
IPB Image
A bit of research revealed that they are forged from 6082 grade aluminium, very similar to 6061. I chose a 5183 rod for good strength and colour match. A bit of work on it...
IPB Image
and things are looking good.
IPB Image
The previous owner had painted the wheels white so I've spent a bit of time getting rid of the paint and polishing the petals. Will eventually repaint the black around them. Should give the silver 914 a bit more street cred!
tygaboy
REALLY nice repair on that wheel! aktion035.gif

What, exactly, did you do/use to finish the weld?
LowBridge
Modified a relay to handle the fuel pump on my carbs.. changed the color so we don't mix it up at a later date

I was going to mount it up on my lathe or milling machine and use some electrically powered tools but in the end used a hand file and then various grades of wet and dry over a cork base. A cloth buffing mop in a drill to finish them off. Sometimes I just like to do stuff by hand - it's kind of therapeutic !

Got a rock chip in my windshield on Rt 66 and decided to fix it myself since I’ve had 2 new insurance windshields this year. This was the first drive with the second new glass.
Came out pretty pretty good

Then I filled the tank and went for a short drive before putting it away for the summer. It was 106F in Scottsdale today.

Nice job. I for one felt your pain when that happened.
TravisNeff
Cut out the MPS mount and relay board brackets. Pulled the gas tank, fuel lines are a little too close for comfort when doing the engine mounts.

Next are the -4 engine mounts and battery tray to come out. I have a feeling this might be pandora's box of rust.

Go on now........ your shop is an example of what a home shop should look like / tools neatly organized, a few things in progress (like a 901 fully opened up without concern) and a 914 on the table ready for a conversion / not to mention a 2.7 - 6 and 3.0 in the works / unlike me, understated........ good on ya... beerchug.gif

I have a bad habit of bouncing around on several projects at the same time. When I hit a stumbling block or get frustrated with something on one, it goes on the side or back burner for a while (914 content included). Glad to say after I finished my wife's CT-90 refurb, I've been devoting almost all my time to finish the Ghia.

With the most important tasks completed (brakes and steering done), I thought I was done for a while, but yesterday, the throttle cable snapped. I reevaluated what else other needed done. I had already ordered a ton of parts, so in addition to replacing the cable, also replaced the fuel tank filler tube, all the vacuum lines, the dash gauge lamps, and new fresh-air hoses and a rain tray in the engine compartment.

I attended the OEBC (Orange Empire Bus Company) - Volkswagen enthusiast group's 19th annual camp-out & picnic at Featherly RV Park in Yorba Linda today, to see an old VW friend and pick up a couple more needed items. A lot of nice vehicles on display

Just like 914s, the Ghia's shifter linkage is feeling a little vague, so I talked with the guys at the BENCO Transaxle booth about installing new shifter bushing as well as their 'Freeway Flier' tranaxles. They offer different gearing options for different size motors, including type 616 motors, just in case it ever comes to that idea.gif ... Hoping to install the bushings this coming week popcorn[1].gif

Some looks ok and some looks a little crusty. Someone has patched the driver side long before, but they never patched the bottom of the long. This will need to be cut out and patched

Hell hole is not too bad, but will need patching as well. I ordered a right side engine tray today; not sure that I really need a whole panel. I think just a small patch is needed for the existing tray. That might save me a couple hundred bucks. idea.gif

I fitted the final 2 pieces of engine tin seals that arrived saturday.

Started examining the paint/body for imperfections and damage since spraying it. There is quite a bit to repair thanks to clumsyness.

Got my gas burners booked in for new rubber on friday

And found that the horn and wipers are now not working!
TravisNeff
I pulled out the engine gasket surround thingies. Damn it was filthy under the car. So instead of cutting out bad metal, I went into my stalling tactic and cleaned up the engine bay and under the trunk floor instead. Nice and clean now. I scared myself when I walked into the bathroom and saw myself in the mirror, LOL! You know its bad when you keep the gallon pump bottle of orange pumice cleaner in the shower...

Nothing 914 related today, however on Sunday went to a Volvo car show and swap meet and picked up a couple of radios for the 914 and my 242. Wanted something close to period correct.

The Audivox was $10 and the Blaupunkt CR-2001 was free!

Sure does beat cleaning by hand. These are getting black centers, leaving outer rim as shown. These are going on Jerry's V8 car. Oddly enough, these are replacing his
ATS rims. Here to help Mark if you've got something big.

I am for now, budget is tight. I wasn't really expecting to see the mechanical tensioners:)

More cutting today. Looks like I will have to patch where the engine mount was as well as the top of the long. At what point should I be getting worried the car will start bending in ways I don't like while I am cutting?

Yesterday I got a shrinker/stretcher kit from HF & a bending brake. Then picked up some 18G & 20G steel for creating patches.

I made a cardboard template using a set of dividers/compass thingy. I used the 18g for this patch. The flange is about 10-11mm in height.

Here is my first pass at using both the brake and the shrinker. I needed to make one cut in the flange and two separate bends. I am pretty pleased with how this one turned out. I will need to fine tune once I cut out the bad metal and cut the new piece to fit.

Now I better not let my good luck go to waste, I am off to buy some lottery tickets! cheer.gif
AZ914
Looks good Travis.. where do you buy steel from?
TravisNeff
I got it from AZ steel off of mesa drive south of the US60.

With the leftover scrap from the hell hole piece I tried my best to recreate the trunk supports. One was a wadded up booger and the other has seen better days, but I can get an idea of size and shape. Good thing this will be hidden, LOL.
Mueller
Looking good Travis, now we have another metal shaping master on 914World! (not me, hahaha)
Mueller
Got some goodies in the mail today.

Easy install even without looking at the directions.

Amazingly all my lights work on the car which is nice. Even turned on the running lights and headlights for testing.

I think I'll be ordering all new seals for the lights however from 914Rubber even if I don't plan on driving in the rain or even washing this turd of a 914 anytime in the near future.

Since I put a brand new battery in I figured I'd at least try and crank over the old motor, it wouldn't budge. Not going to look into any further since I am building the 1.8 for it.

Rick at Fuchs Restorations told me that he uses old broken Fuchs wheel pieces to use for fill on repairs so it matches perfectly.

Just an idea?
