Spent 4 hours last night trying to get driver's door handle to work - plunger inside misses the latching mechanism. Did some bending on the metal flange that is supposed to hit the plunger, but now the plunger hits it but then then slides off. Guess I'll be taking another whack at it. Cannot figure out what has happened. One day the handle worked, next day it didn't.

Anyone know a history of this happening?

But there are 2 other issues:

I pulled the latching assembly at least a dozen times, completely re-conditioned it, even soaking it in carb cleaner, re-lubing it. The sliding movement up and down of the locking assembly is far too difficult, as if something is binding - but I sure can't see what it is.

Also, went to remove the 10mm nut on the door flange that is hidden with the door closed to remove the handle assembly - and guess what? The stud embedded in the cast door handle material spins in the cast metal. So I cannot get the nut off.

Any suggestions for that?

Complete oil change today in the garage.

It looks simple in theory, but it's not on a /6. I had to take the left side header completely off, and I (brilliantly) figured out to weigh the the amount of old oil on my bathroom scale to calculate out how much oil to put back in the car, plus a new filter.

I was pretty proud of myself after undoing three oil lines to drain/clear them AND the engine drain plug.

Dang, I'm drinking a Moscow Mule now...........

I had this happen years ago. I put a notch in the stud with a hacksaw and then used a narrow screwdriver to hold it while I removed the nut. While you have the handle off, peen the edge of the stud and apply anti-seize to the stud.

Greg -

Brilliant. cheer.gif

A bit embarrassed that I didn't think of that myself, as I've done similar things in the past.

Think I'll cut the notch with a Dremel tho..........

Thank you.

I started my engine for the first time in years!
Over the last couple months I've been getting the wiring and fuel plumbing set for the engine to go in and last week I installed the engine.
This weekend I got enough done to get power and fuel to the engine and start it.
I cranked up oil pressure and flushed the fuel circuit but no other adjustments to the engine. In fact when I installed the points I just adjusted the gap by eye and have not checked the dwell or timing yet.
I am on my 5th fuel pump, the first 4 either leaked or didn't run.

I'm going to try to link my video of the start.

Had to grind off retaining screw on left door handle to get it out - became clear why it wouldn't work - when what was hidden could now be seen - nylon plunger was broken off out of sight....good plunger part from right door shows. Rt. door broke in weak cast section - both door handles failed after I got the car.....

Good news is switching the key assemblies to good handles is extremely easy.

I had a rare but fun weekend working on my 914 where it was stored. I fixed the brakes dragging issue (venting clearance),Click to view attachment

Is that a dragging rear brake issue? Mine does the same but to a lesser degree and I figured it was the rear toe alignment that was a bit too much toe in. I'll have to check on the brakes first I guess. smile.gif

Well, it went away when I freed the brakes up from insufficient venting clearance. The debris is brake pad, I think. Good luck!

It is the remnants of an old Cold War Era Air Force radar station that was part of a network that overlooked the West Coast. Opened back up to the public access last year for the first time in decades.

Got the horn working today after 2 years without it. Seems that all the wiring was correct and intact. Got the relay to trigger but no beep beep. found out the new Chinese made relays weren't making contact with the socket on the fuse panel. Had to pry the pronged male posts outward with a jewelers screwdriver to open up the post dia. Simple fix took 4 hours. Will file this in my cranium for the future.

I can "horn em" now as my toddler son used to say. Beep Beep Beep

Found top key shop in town could duplicate the original master key and give me the original Key Code from the original door locks.

I had put the new locks in the door handles Chi-town sent me, but they would not work. Only key I had other than Valet key had been rigged, and was not a copy of the original.

Somewhere on here someone mentioned that as far as copying the key, one could use a Valet key to make a main ignition/door key from it and the only difference was a groove in the key - can anyone remind me where that post is? Looked but cannot find it.....

It was the same cost either thickness and I liked the 1/16" wrap more then the 1/8" from the pictures. It is still thick wrapped just not as bulky as the thicker ones.

I replaced the solid aluminum/Delrin PatrickMS sourced transmission mounts with Wevo mounts. I chose the softer black pillows. I think the vibration through the chassis from the hard mounts was too much for me. I used the cup washers under the mounts and on top of the transmission ears.

After driving the car, it really seems better. Less "valve" sound through the car.

I think it was the right move.
