We went to a PCA event this morning. I got to drive a 356 with microsquirt on it. That transforms the driveability of it tremendously. From the factory, it had 75 up at the crank. Dyno tuning shows 74 hpnat the wheels.

I know it’s not on the car, but after more than a dozen years they are finally going on. smile.gif

Took it for a ride this morning then came home and changed the oil and filter. I have about 4K miles on it now, so the first oil/filter change was at 1,298 miles and now this one at 2,600 miles later. I also sent the oil in to Blackstone Labs for analysis. It looked clean coming out. Looking forward to seeing the report. beerchug.gif

Finished painting under the front fenders for a cleaner look and added protection. Installed new rubber grommets, too. The turn signal cases were media blasted and painted silver + clearcoat since the die cast metal tends to corrode over time.

Took a friend for a ride driving.gif

A former band member at the theater where I work commissioned me to print up some vehicle graphics for his truck.
During the install, I mentioned I had done a partial wrap on one of my 914s.
When he saw it, he went piratenanner.gif so I asked if he'd like to take a ride. smile.gif
Barely into a short 3 mile trip and he was hooked happy11.gif
He said "I'm gonna have to find one of these!"
He's moving back to New Mexico... maybe he'll find a nice one out there!

Got the silver '71 off jack stands and on the ground after some engine/transaxle work. A few things to button up and it will be back on the road, anxious to try out the 115 degree weather... not. Finally got a few hours to spend on Chucky.
Thank you Chris for the ribbed material you sent me.
I never cared for the flat radiator shroud. Looks a bit more like it belongs.
After some forming and cutting I'm almost ready to powder coat. Proud to display.

Spent some time fixing a loose deposit box. Turns out the bracket that attached to the bottom of the dash was not tight. Tightened those two screws and then had to get the two screws that secure the deposit back back in. I was contorted like a pretzel getting the bracket secured and then it took me about 10 minutes per screw, to get the deposit box screwed to the bracket. With the extra wiring in the deposit box area for the electric antenna and the seat heaters it was slow and careful going. I learned that at my age I really should not be bending my body up like that. My brother was laughing and making fun of me.

I also am having a throttle issue. So I pulled the pedal board out and checked the cable and all that seems OK. So put that back together. I may have to drop by Pacific Power Motorsports to see if it is somehow an engine system that is messing with me. If I am driving and take my foot off the gas the RPMs will go down to about 1500 and then I have to just tap the pedal to get it to drop to idle. It's a bit irritating when it does it, but it is not all the time. But we shall see what we see. The car runs great otherwise.

I also have to adjust my left front wheel bearing next weekend, I have a tiny bit of wiggle if I grab the wheel and rock it when the car is up in the air with the wheels hanging. Probably not even 1/8 of a turn to correct I bet.

Got my 914 Flag today from 914 Rubber; makes a nice dust cover while in the garage

Put the car up on jackstands/blocks all the way around so I could pull all 4 tires. First time in 40+ years I believe that I have had all 4 tires off the ground at once.
Finally connected with Glenn, he is going to refinish the steelies. He can also press in my new front bearings. Then new rotors. Calipers due back from PMB in a couple weeks and start to put the brake system back together.

Are any wires frayed? how do the spade connectors look? If not too bad I would assemble and use Deoxit on all the connections

Replaced my flasher relay and fixed the turn signals and hazards. Fixed wiring from the body guy on the left rear lamp assembly. Cleaned it and got the cover on 30 seconds before it started pouring.

Reassembled the dizzy after opening it up to unstick the mechanical advance. Could not get it to free up. Put in an order for a 123ignition with Bluetooth.

made some parts orders today related to getting my motor back together, seals and hardware, hope my heads get back here next week so i can get to work on it.

I was having a problem with my throttle sticking every now and again. Not a big deal as it would just get stuck at around 1500 RPM when I took my foot off the gas. Tap the pedal ever so lightly and it would drop to idle. I spent last Sunday pulling the seat, console, gas pedal and pedal board out and all seemed fine in the interior. I them checked the rear of the car and everything seemed correct and no issues there either.

This morning I took it in to Eric at Pacific Power Motor Sports in Walnut Creek. Of course it ran flawlessly all the way there....5 miles. Eric spent about an hour going over everything and said he could find no issues at all. He also took it for a nice ride and said no issues at all. Eric is just a great guy and loves these cars. He told me to drive it this weekend and let him know next week if it acts up.

I am going to do some general maintenance on it over the weekend so it will be in tip top shape for the ride to LA next Saturday the 10th. We will probably hit the road about 2:00 AM, (can't wait to give Spoke's LED fog lights and my new Vintage Car LED headlights a good test.) so we can be at Kent's shop around 8:00 AM. Looking forward to seeing the guys. beerchug.gif

When I built the car, I didn't go with an engine bay sound/heat pad for weight reasons and also with the white paint I thought the engine bay would be easier to see inside.

After further review, I decided the car with a six back there was a bit too loud.
So what to do?
Add a sound deadening pad after the fact without pulling the engine.

I purchased one from Aase Sales that is very nice and very light weight...only 1 lb 13 oz.
The factory original was over 11 lbs.

I used contact cement (an entire can) on the backside of the pad and the engine bay firewall.
How to get it in without it sticking right away?
I just wrapped the pad in a plastic garbage bag.
It worked great.
Got the pad in place without it sticking, then just pulled the garbage bag and pushed the pad against the firewall.
It's not going anywhere.

Easy task for those that want to take it on.
Best part, the car is definitely more pleasant to drive but I can still hear enough of the flat six.
Wunderbar.

With good friends help and training, using commercial buffer I buffed out oxidized paint with Meguires #1 and #2 which car has needed ever since I got it 4 years ago.....ready for wax but didn't have time today and C&C is tomorrow am so wax will have to wait.

Pics I took got recorded as videos so I cannot post them - will get some tomorrow.Darn iPhone is taking all my photos as short videos. Need to research how to stop that.

Other items done in last week or 2:

Webers fine tuned, engine running great and strong. I've put 550 problem-free miles on the car since putting the engine back in in end of May.

New LED headlights I got from Mark a year ago finally installed. Fog Lights finally wired as DRL's with LED lamps in them. Lots of new seals from 914rubber installed.

Other stuff too but I'm too whooped to remember....

Installed new plugs, plug wires and coil. Rerouted some wiring in the engine bay so nothing crossed the plug wires. Not sure if it is related but had one of the best starts ever and did not need any higher rev warmup before it would idle without any ‘help’.

That must have been disappointing. biggrin.gif I've only seen a few. Lots of fancy cars in this neck of the woods, but only a few of the new mid-engine. Probably see more when the season starts up again.
