Made up some new battery cable using the old ends from existing cable. Bought 2 close out long cable for less than $10 on the internet. Heated up the brass ends and pulled out cable. I spread the ends with a chisel, inserted new cable, crimped in the vise and reheated the brass to let the soldier flow for a good connection

Finally, I have a parking brake. New cables from Pelican, easy install. I now have all new brakes, I don't always have to leave the car in gear and worry about it rolling back.

Started tearing my wife's motor apart and can confirm it IS a 1.7L - pulled the heads and measured the pistons (90mm, slightly-domed). They actually look pretty clean too (inside) - hmmm idea.gif

Started going to my auto shop class again - tonight started the new semester. I threw some greasy parts in the solvent tank and blasted some tins smile.gif

Same thing today as the last four days. Installing Mikey's windshield to dash strip has required a bit of training. It doesn't have the metal teeth that held the OEM strip in place so I have to silicone a 12" section, one section at a time. Otherwise it wants to "leap" off in places. A good gasket, just needed some training. biggrin.gif Windshield goes in next. piratenanner.gif

Went to drive it the liquor store today and it will not start. Aaargh! It has been dependable since I purchased it January and now this. Fuel pump primes, engine cranks, but will not start.

Had driven it maybe 60 miles on Easter Sunday - all good and just parked it when I got home.

I will check all the usual things (air, fire, fuel) and see what the deal is.

Sold my 70 flared roller sad.gif . Left in trailer this morning. Having the extra space will be nice eventually. Once the hole in my heart plugs evilgrin.gif

Shit Sticks! Went out to install the windshield only to find the Pinch Weld primer was congealed. Another 4 days parked in the garage. fyou1.gif

647]Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentRoad bicycle rack finally completed. I had a bunch of parts laying around and finally got around to fabricating a bike rack. Now I can ride in both of my favorite forms of transportation. Basically used metal brackets from an old garage door opener, aluminum plate, aluminum angle, and lots of allen head screws. Still need to trim off the angle and rattle can the entire thing black. Looks like Rube Goldberg, but I did a test run and its pretty sold. Oh, yeah, the bike cost about the same price as the car.

That is too damn cool. Mind if I borrow that design idea?

On the advice of some other folks here, I loosened the screw holding the driver's side door handle trim in place and now I can open my door from the inside again!

I fixed my broken vacuum line to my boost solenoid. It was causing a 30psi boost spike. happy11.gif

Fixed my no-start issue. Determined I had no fire/spark so cleaned tranny ground strap, cleaned battery terminals and cables, checked elec. connections at coil, checked all plug wires, cleaned and re-gapped points, replaced rotor.

Started right up.

That's a beautiful car! Are those 6x15 Fuchs?
john_f
They're certainly Fuchs. Tyre size is 205/60 R15 (Yokohamas) Diameter is 15". Not sure of the actual wheel width.
Thanks for the compliments!

----...exactly nothing, because i am with out wheels at the moment! i have a set of 16X6 and 7's that my friend and mechanic Mr. Bob Woodman is pulling off of his '74 DE car for me to do a test fit to make sure the 7's will work- if allgoes well, i should have my newly refurbished fuchs in about a month!

Started threading the wiring harness back into the car, had the rear ends threaded thru the new snorkle with about 4 inches to go when it split open and was trash.
Then decided to tackle the airbox reinstall, got it back in place but but to slightly elongate the mounting holes in the brackets to get it to fit with the new top seal and mesh.... Then when threading the front harness back I found a damaged wire that the company that just has restored the harness missed.....wonder what else they missed... sad.gif I so need to split some firewood and drink beer right now...

Removed the top off and took her out with my daughter for a short shakedown prior to Friday's Hershey run. With the oil cooler installed, temps were right at 205-210. smile.gif That's a relief... Had bled the brakes last week and that made a nice improvement in pedal feel, and overall braking. The swill that came out was pretty nasty.

The fuel pump is a question tho, it's buzzing and gently squealing at times but a quick run up to 95 gave no indication of any fuel starvation. I think that was the only time my daughter looked up from her cell phone... dry.gif

Boy, that last comment about your daughter sure sounds familiar. Sounds like me talking about my daughter! Ha ha!

Took it out of winter hibernation and cleaned it up. I have a few extra tops so I painted one checkerd and tried it on. I probrobly wouldnt run it all the time but it looks good if the mood is right. Now iv got to figure out why its not charging

It's the top slap.gif

You've created a paradox, with unequal number of opposing colored squares linearly vs. laterally. The protons and electrons are bombarding each other, rather than flowing uniformly in one direction. idea.gif

Put the other top back on and see if that helps poke.gif

...took a break from the 914 chores and went over to Santa Anita Park for a short 20 minute parking lot autocross. $70.00 , your choice of super car; Lamborghini, Ferrari, 997 turbo.
I drove the Porsche , left it in second, and used the dirty gravelly tarmac to whip the back end out, and get some good thrills. The Italian stallions were running hot and slow...good choice on the P car driving.gif

Hi, can you share on a separate thread your oil cooler installation and type of cooler? Thanks!

I took the car cover off the 911 and laid it on top of the 914. So technically I did something to the 914 today.

I fixed all the damage to my trailer so I can tow the 914 to WCR.

This is for Murphy's law. If I have the trailer, it will not need to be towed...

Went to the shop to get some pix of a bunch of other VW parts I want to sell (on the Samba site).

However, I do have one REAL Porsche part to sell … a Pre-A 356 transaxle housing that I'll probably post on the Bird board smile.gif

Thats not a pre-A trans housing. ITs a 741 case which is the later B's and C's. Pre-A's had a split case trans like the early VW's.
euro911
Oh darn dry.gif … I don't know much about 356 tranaxles.

Interesting though, it was Harry Pellow who told me it was a Pre-A box confused24.gif

Just did a search, and found this: "Part #: 741.301.101.10 Type: 741/0C Case will fit model years 1960 thru 1965"

Maybe you can sell it to the boys down the road from our shindig at WCR- isn't there a 356 gathering going on the same weekend in Cambria? idea.gif

got it out of winter storage. Patrick MS shifter really changes the feel. much more precise and solid feeling. can't wait to get the top off and drive it more.

Picked up my suspension parts from the powder coaters. I went with a metallic gray... called Glimmer #7

Hmmm … not a bad idea - I'll mention that in my Pelican ad. Thanks for the suggestion beerchug.gif

I checked other for sale ads and have it posted on the Samba now. Looks like they're selling for a lot more than what I paid for it 30 years ago smile.gif … Glad I didn't cut it up for an engine run stand (which is why I originally bought it) screwy.gif

I believed that tube from auxiliary heater fan to passenger side heat exchanger to push air going to passenger side vent.

I don't think I've posted in this thread before, but I did something today so quick and simple I just had to tell the world. I turned the throttle body idle adjustment screw clockwise on my 1.8 FI and brought the idle speed down to a proper level.

Man, was that satisfying! I feel like a regular mechanic.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That's funny. Congrats! I too had a small (albeit larger than your task) task to handle. It turned out well and I'm pleased.

Took my 71 out for a nice afternoon cruise to Harbor Freight only to find I couldn't get into 4/5 and all others were hard to find too. Knew the stick bushing was gone from when I bought the car. My temporary electrical tape "bushing" decided to no longer be of help, so I bought and installed a new bushing. While I was in there, I reused and "McGiver'd" the large shift rod pivot bushing. And finally, the same bushing at the tail of the tranny was basically gone so that location got a new bushing as well as the cover box being cleaned of sludge etc. Now the shifting is tight, 4/5 are back and it feels like a new(er) car biggrin.gif So happy when the little things go so easily!!
Now if I could get the little beater to stop leaking oil from everywhere and quit leaving piddle puddles on my floor, I'd be really happy. But it's a beater and I don't care. Adding oil is quicker than dropping and splitting engine cases ..........it's soooo liberating to just not care biggrin.gif Am I bad for feeling this way?

Drove it to go buy a new toy M3. After finalizing the deal for the M3, I had the salesman drive my new/used car to my house rather than letting him drive the 914. I still love the 914 more but I am pretty excited for the DD. I can't believe I pulled the trigger on it today.

Great BMW, pity you can not try it on the Autobahn!

Short term ownership made me go to the 'shop' twice: both times for a jack receiver plate and some welding wire. Arno Wienands who sells 914 parts is only 10 miles south of my house, so that's easily fixed.

26 hrs in so far.

Same thing happened right after we bought my wife's 71. Same fixes too, although the entire job took me about 5 hours (being the first time I ever had to deal with the issue). Amazing how replacing some little plastic do-nuts can change your whole view on life aktion035.gif
