Drove it to a small outdoor party. When arriving back home and stopping while the garage door was opening, noticed that the shift lever (Rennshifter) was spinning loosely on its mounting peg. Was able to do a complete 360 with it. Luckily we were home and so put some thread lock on the two Allen bolts and tightened them back up. The Mrs was never the wiser, since she knows the history of breakdowns and sundry mishaps. She doesn’t need to be spooked any more.

Cleaned up an area behind the main driveway's gate, allowing us to get 'HOWARD' off of the mid-rise lift and moved into the back yard.

Need the lift to drop the entire front suspension out of the Ghia for a total rebuild, as well as installing a rebuilt transaxle.

Once the Ghia's done, we can move 'HOWARD' back onto the lift and prep for it's F & R suspension rebuild.

Took it out for a trip to Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley from San Jose. Take out menu and picnic in the parking lot with the family. My 17 year old daughter chased me thru the backroads with her Mini Cooper.

Finished replacing the full set of targa seals from 914Rubber.
WHAT A HUGE difference they make. Soooo much quieter, no rattling or thuds while going over bumps anymore.
Awesome!

John Cooper Works JWC . A few more extras over the S model in 2013. More car than a 17 year old needs, but a great excuse to have another toy for dad. biggrin.gif

Took sheet metal to local powdercoater since I have the engine out on the '73.

(we had a MCS when the "new" Mini first came in 2003 or so and absolutely LOVED that car! It was my wife's DD. Other than the 914's it was one of the most fun cars to drive I've ever had...)

My wife has owned 2 of them a grey early model S. After 40k had to be taken to BMW dealer to get back of valves clean because of the way the direct injection sprays fuel. The second was a white 2016 S. I drove both neither as fun as the 914. I did like the way the huge 10 inch center speedo changed colors. Interesting to note my wife just bought a Miata mx5 and says its the best car she has ever owned hahahahahahahahah. Ill admit it kind of reminds me of a modern day 914 but very reliable.

Monday's project... replace the barn door Air flow meter with a Mass Airflow sensor.

Wiring is temporary... I have to verify I have the signal and reference wires hooked up correctly.

The new one is much lighter and less restrictive. Should add a few horses to the 4L motor.

Waiting for a 994 air charge temp sensor before I can finish it.

Last night was assembling a BMW motor for our 540i. It should be ready to install on Saturday.

Busy.. busy ... busy smash.gif

Snagged a set of Italian 40 IDF Webers off of a 914 Facebook group last Friday. They arrived today and took them over to my mechanic to rebuild them. He's one of the last carb artists in San Diego (that I know of anyway).
They will get torn down, sonic cleaned, and fully rebuilt. Should have them back by next week.
Now, I have to get some good 1.8 manifolds as the ones that came with the carbs are for 2.0 heads.

I had new tires installed yesterday to replace the old 9 year old Bridgestone Potenza tires I had on the car. The old tires were as hard as rocks and slipped too much after the years. Went with the same size 195/65/15 tires in a Goodyear Eagle Sport all terrain from the Tire Rack. The Goodyear sit a bit wider than the Potenzas and have a nice rubber shoulder for a rim protector on them. The 195/65/15 is a tight fit in the rear. They are as wide as the 205/55/16 I ran on 16” Fuchs rims many years ago. I took the car out for a back road test today and they performed better than expected.

Tires ran $400.00 plus tax and come with a $50.00 mail in rebate. Next time I won’t be such a CSOB and wait so long to replace the tires.

I think it sits pretty flat. I’ll double check by measuring front and rear of rocker to the ground on a flat surface this afternoon. Thanks
eric9144
@Michael N yes a 3.8, its crazy, still getting used to having something that "built" blink.gif

Checked my breather canister/filter today to make sure nothing was in it, dry as a bone. Hoping to heck my oil puke situation (cheech and chong'd the 5 freeway) is behind me and I'll be good to go for the June 6th run. I'll try and hit some local roads during the week to do some more shake out.

Got the speedo fixed, after everything else the odometer/trip took a $hit and had to repair it. Car sat for ~6 yrs and I knew there'd be some issues but I really just want to drive driving.gif

I adjusted my valves (first time) which turned into quite the project. I'm a big guy (6'7 280 lbs) so there's no way I could get my meat hooks up into the head without dropping the exhaust. Everything went very smoothly and it only took me about an hour to get everything adjusted.

I realized after having put everything back together that I really need to invest in a nice set a headers. Having to deal with all the extra pieces attached to the heat exchangers isn't worth it since the car will be on jack stands during cold months.

Sweet, Steve - sweet. Congrats on holding on to it for all these years.

When you bought it, you had no idea what a great decision it was! And every year since you made again the same great decision.

Not many people can say they ever did that........

One of my fav 914's for sure.......an honor to know both you - and your car!

Today I pressurised the window wash system. Or so I tried. First the connection to the wheel was leaking air, so I fixed that, only to find out that when pressurised the system likes to leak the fluid out of the switch all over the dashboard headbang.gif

So I decided to ditch the entire system. And just run a pump.

I've read the tutorial here in the classics, the one from Andy. And although I like the option for the stalk, I opted for the cheaper and quicker way just to add an temporary button (I need to have it all working in 14 days and at this point I don't want to go and mess with to much stuff).

So while I wait for the pump to come in I made a bracket with an always off switch to connect to the pump when it comes in. I just used a bolt from the center console to mount it. So I can take it out when I do it properly with the stalk.

Looks decent enough.

A suggestion for you...

Next time just drop the motor and transmission. It will make the valve adjustment much easier, and you can do other maintenance like replacing the alternator belt easily. It only takes about 30 minutes to drop the motor, and it only costs you two CV gaskets.

I drop the motor to adjust valves on any six, that way the oil gets changed too.

And another question for you....

How was a 6'7" guy actually fit in the driver's seat of a 914???? I want to see a picture!!

111953519G or 91461381515 wiper switch also has a separate wire for the pump.
This wire is +12v to the pump.
When i pull the stalk towards me, it turns on the pump and washes the window. Mine also has the intermittent wiper option, so i can pull the stalk, wash the window and engage the intermittent wiper function.

With what appears to be brown wires, did you simply cut the ground to the pump with the switch?
I've been thinking of doing something similar....

That's what I did on mine - put the switch the ground wires (mounted the switch up under the dash. So, while you can cut either side,, I prefer to use the ground wires, so there's not a live wire under there when I'm working on other stuff or fumbling around blindly trying to find the dern switch by feel.

Hard mounted my 2.5# fire extinguisher in the 6 using a Rennline universal mount. Had to cut down the aluminum shafts that the plate mounts on because the 914 seat rails are too narrow to their "universal" spec. Seems overly complex on some levels but fits really well once customized and installed:
