GREAT C&C in Richmond this Saturday too! TONS of cars of all types, several hundred.

Mine was the only 914 as Rick Berkowitz drove his 911, leaving his mint 914 and FiberFab 356 at home. So my 914 got a lot of attention. Maybe cause I replaced the black EMPI's with nice newly-powder-coated Mahle's?

No pics, so here's one from a previous C&C with Rick's '72 outshining mine:

Worked on headlights tonight - right one was high in front, low in back - think I've got it corrected.

I got a tracking number today! More to come.

I had to remove my front valance so that meant the front bumper had to come off too. I took the opportunity to clean and wax the front nose and lights. I have a GT oil cooler in the trunk, that is why the 5 rubber plugs are not installed. Looks really nice and clean so I will feel better once the valance and bumper go back on. beerchug.gif

Raised the front 1/4" so it now sits level. I know 1/4" is not much, but I wanted to see if I can tell a difference when driving. BTW, the adjustment bolts are pretty sensitive when raising and lowering. Like a 1/8 turn makes a noticeable difference. Took me about 4 times to get it exactly where I wanted. On and off the lift, drive down the street and come back and measure. Repeat until perfect. Fortunately it is only 95 degrees outside..... beerchug.gif

Changed ignition switch – the OEM part is dirt cheap as it's common to many VAG cars into the 1990s. The old switch had started to play up – usual problem of the engine wouldn't fire unless you wiggled the key at the same time as operating the starter. A dead easy job and 20 minutes well spent!

BTW, the two blue wires are part of the electric washer conversion.

Took apart and cleaned the distributor internals - for perhaps the first time in 48 years?

AND - with this 50th post, graduated from Newbie to Member! Hurrah!

Getting the case and internals ready for assembly. Cleaned oil passage ways, cam follower bores, .... Hoping to get her rolling soon. Crank/rotating assembly are out for balancing.

Curious: how far out of balance could these be from the factory?

My eldest son is a former C5 Corvette owner - when the C5 was still the newest model. He appreciates both shifting gears and a fine handling car. He likes driving my Cayman S.

But until last night he'd only driven my 914 around the block.

Last night I encouraged him to drive it, and to push it in the twisties - I live in the country in Virginia where twisties are the norm everywhere except on the few major highways.

He absolutely loved driving the car and was blown away by its performance in all categories, but especially the handling. Loved the cornering, ride, comfort, how it handled bumpy roads (a lot in our county), seats, and even interstate driving at 70+ mph.

More than anything, he loved shifting...."I've been driving a Honda Accord and Toyota 4Runner for so long!" But he was even surprised (as I was, and am) at how strong the little, 46 year-old 2.0 L engine pulls with the IDF-44s. At 3 grand and above, the sound is so sweet, and the engine could not be smoother.

Told him the 914 is one of the automobile world's best hidden secrets that only its owners really know.

I was delighted to see how much fun he was having - we drove about 25 miles on all kinds of roads, ending up on interstate.

I offered the car to him for dates with his beautiful wife anytime he wanted - and he not only agreed to do it - as soon as he got back here to our house, he made her the offer - and she said she can't wait!

Made my day!

Now, if he can just learn that 1st to 2nd shift........yes, my linkage is exceptionally tight.........

My 914 just turned 64,000 original miles. Had 60,600 when I got it. Yes - I just take it out for drives just to enjoy it.......often.......

Rick B. (full restored '72 914 w/new engine, stunning paint & more, '96 911, '90 FiberFab 356 repro) & I spent an hour my 914 yesterday with Rick driving & flogging the car, which both it and I loved. Could not be running better.

We’ve decided to open our home to some needy parts. They do have a sadness about them, but we’ll brighten them up. Thank you Mark for the extra goodies I found in the tub I didn’t expect.

Thanks!! After a few long drives and a year of tweaking, the car drives better than new and with the BlueTooth attached to the DIM even the music is pretty good.

Here are a couple of more shots.

Looking at the picture we are going to replace the first gen 914 rubber visors with an NOS set.

Reconnected the linkage arms with new cone screws. Filled the transmission. One question: how the heck does one get the rubber boot that goes over the front/rear linkage knuckle joint onto the firewall? I fought with it for 30min then ended up splitting it at the rear end.

Drove the 74 about 80 miles tonight. I live out in the boonies and I took her to the gym.
I love the raw drive the car gives me. Every once in a while I'll drive my wife's S5 and it's a sweet ride but, even though it's a 6 speed manual, it's still very very refined. The 914 lets you feel what you're doing, and it feels SOOOOOO good.
I can't wait to get the 75 finished. We're doing the final wiring of the lights and dash right now. Then the interior and it's done.

Been grinding down the 8 small rust spots where the sail meets the body and one on the front right corner of the panel in front of the windshield.

Met with expert restoration body shop owner to evaluate his painting my 14 back to Malaga Red - he is backed up for a year, so I got my name/car in line.

He looked at my ground down rust spots and gave me very good news - the rust is not deep, and not from underneath. Very shallow he said. Really good news. While he will take care of it all in the restoration painting, I want to get all the rust out now so it doesn't continue. Even tho the car will never be in the rain and is always garaged. I'm gonna do temporary repairs to each spot with Eastwood's Rust Converter and thin layer of bondo, sanding smooth and hitting with L31M Scarlett Red touch-up paint that I have just to keep the car looking decent until next year's paint job.

Also glued back on the button for inside rearview mirror that had come off......need the real glue - Super Glue does not hold for long.......

P car C&C in old town Scottsdale this AM. Took the bahia red '73. 2 914's there. Pretty toasty on the way home but oil temp stayed between 200 and 210 max. Didn't hit 200 on the way there but the sun was barely coming up!

(might have enjoyed the AC in the spyder on the way home more, but had to do the air-cooled cars proud this AM!!)

Put the /4 in the air and finally had the opportunity to change the trans fluid and swap out my speedo drive with the upgraded double O ring version from 914rubber. Then went for a quick drive through the twisties for quality control and to make sure there were no leaks afterwards...not a drop!

Been using Dremel to grind down small rust spots behind molding that goes at bottom of sail. Seems the spring clips (4) that hold the molding in are prone to rust themselves and start the rusting process from the small holes then downward.

Wish the clips were stainless, but not so. Seems with the design, rust at these holes is inevitable with enough time.......

Took it for a drive after replacing all the shift linkage bushings and seal/ o-ring where the linkage goes into the transmission. Adjusted the shifter. Shifting is MUCH better. Did not nick reverse a single time. Also no blue spots under the car after sitting for a while - I have Swepco in the transmission and have been haunted, until now, by blue drops on the floor that appear whether I drove it or not.

Fixed the driver's side trunk hinge attachment using the J West mod. Not exactly a piece of cake but not because the kit was an issue - just a lot of work but it all worked out.

Off work this week for Monterey Car Week but wasn’t planning on driving in until Tuesday for the week. Nolan starts school this upcoming Wednesday so I decided to take Kathy’s Bumblebee to the Monterey Porsche car week kick-off event. I will be camping at the track for the week but not taking the 914 for the rest of the week. sad.gif My 914-6 is still at the shop with electrical issues. My son Nolan (16 years old), drove the Bumblebee home from Monterey to San Jose via hwy 17 thru the Santa Cruz mountains.

I filled in my holes and am planning on mounting the strips with double sided tape. Those holes always rust!
