Found some rust when restoring the engine compartment, so installed NOS battery tray and support... also took out a small piece of compromised metal against the firewall. We cannot find any more rust to address, but that’s what we thought six months ago smile.gif

Got the PITA Main Targa seal in today. Everything went okay, just sore tired hands. I did use a screen roller on the seal going down the channel, worked real good. Don't even want to tell you the time involved, lol. so now the old 71 has all new seals in window, and top area. piratenanner.gif

Forgot to mention it was the 914 Rubber seals.

Put her up on the lift and gave it a once over to make sure nothing came loose or was damaged on the 400+mile WCR weekend. Car was great.

I did have my driver side fog light lens and bezel separate from the housing. The grill kept it in place and no damage was done so next weekend I will take care of that. Car is now nice and clean and back under its cover in the garage. beerchug.gif

Trial fitted new seat (Cobra RSR) – narrow enough to allow handbrake access (many aftermarket seats are too wide), fouls backpad, but seat is in exactly the right place for me so undecided whether to remove backpad and replace with carpet, or not.
Another plus is that the RSR is a very shallow seat, about the same depth as the original, so no height problems there, either. Narrower than stock runners, so waiting for some material to arrive to make simple adaptor.

looks nice!! it’s kind of fun putting all back together, and once you clean up the car like that it’s hard to put any old stuff on that motor! might as well do it all! isn’t it nice we have so many vendors that supply literally everything you want or need?
raynekat
Perhaps an upholstery shop could modify your backpad (if that is something you would even consider?) such that the new seat fits into the backpad better.
Seat looks like it offers a lot of support.
Very nice.

I'm probably going to remove the backpad anyway, as part of the 914's transformation into a road/comp car using full harnesses, but I agree a decent trim shop should be able to modify it to suit.

The seat is now fitted properly – very easy mod using the stock runners. Removed the runners from the original seat, bolted then to the underside of a 40cm x 40cm piece of 4mm-thick alumin(i)um, on to which the seat itself is then bolted. The height of the seat squab works out to be exactly the same as stock – I'd been worried it may end up too high. So, now have supportive aftermarket seats and all the benefits of factory runners and tilt mechanism. Perfect!

Worked on cleaning up the rear shift rod, stripping the rust, and treating with Ospho before painting. Then moved on to installing new 914rubber bushings into the shift knuckle. Tough to get started in the holes. Had to add a chamfer on the leading edge.

@Mikey914
On the replacement bushings, are the holes supposed to be oblong? It's noticeable when not installed but I thought they would round out once pressed in, however, the holes still look a little large after pressed in.

Wanted to get some feedback on this before I finish painting and putting this assembly back together.

I had to replace that part on my 914 recently. I couldn't get the rod to seat into the hole. Very different to do when you can only jack the car up a few inchs. In the end I took to my friendly local garage. I relieved to see they had to file the hole to got the rod in. I wasnt being a completely numpty.

I rode in a car with a 3.2 and felt for back pad. It was night and day more louder than my 3.2 with back pad. The owner drives with ear plugs. Curious if there is a way to put dynamat under the felt? idea.gif

I have a layer of Dynamat on the bulkhead already, and it made a huge difference. My plan was to try the felt/carpet on top of that and see– if it's too loud, I'll look into getting the backpad modified.

I broke stuff on my 914 today. I was adjusting my headlight mechanisms and some how fubar'd one of the pivots. This corner of the car shows signs of being wrecked and repaired so I think something is bent or not aligned correctly.

ran my first AX yesterday, this was a big course had a blast. hopefully the rain holds off today and we get more runs but car ran good.

was lots of fun but waited all day, my group was last, i had sun in my eyes for 1 run bad, i improved by 6 seconds from first run to the last one, car ran good and handles excellent, i slid a bit on a tight turn 2 times but never lost control. super fast cars and experienced drivers ran in the 60’s i ran 83 which is middle of pack with lots of less experienced drivers . i have issue with the shifting of course i now want a short shifter, and smaller steering wheel, i am 6’1” and can’t wear my helmet with top on comfortably so if i do this regularly it will have to be changed, different seat, etc . balance of the car is good, i think. the car can do mid 70 second on this course but not faster without more acceleration so that’s more horsepower, better shifting and a bit more grip in rear. i could also adjust front for a bit more toe out , but i am going to leave it alone for today’s runs.
C5 corvettes and couple caymans were at 58-63 they were so fast, and one ‘76 rabbit set up ran 59, so did a couple karts and a 80’s Honda CRX SI ran low 60, don’t know what he had in that thing but it was not the stock motor. other cars that are pretty quick were honda S2000, some of the Mazda Miatas and a couple VW Golf R’s, and a handful of nicely set up BRZ’s(subaru).
fun stuff, i’ll be back!

I installed newly powder coated muffler hangar and rear sway bar, with new mounting hardware from 914Rubber. Didn't install the drop links yet, as I want to replace the tired Bilsteins first. Also installed a muffler purchased from member @euro911 after painting it in hi- temp header black....I used the Heinz gaskets. When I purchased the car, it had the dual Monza type exhaust on it, which I don't really care for...and this one is much lighter. No sound files yet, but hopefully coming in the next couple weeks. Thanks Mark!
